On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee, I am happy to welcome all participants of the 2015
Summer School on Innovation and Technological Design to École de technologie supérieure
(ÉTS) in Montreal, Canada.
Founded in 1974, our institution is proud to offer a variety of engineering degrees both at the
undergraduate and graduate levels. With its 8,000 students (including more than 2,000 at the
graduate level and close to 400 at the doctorate level), the development of our campus, facilities
and research infrastructures, along with the creation of new programs, have bolstered our
industrial partnerships and our international university partnerships. The latter have become
significantly more prominent in recent years and we look forward to numerous further
developments in this regard. Our mission, which is focused on teaching and applied training in
engineering and technology transfer, has never been more relevant.
And now here we are, with a completely new program: our international Summer School.
Designed for engineering students from partner institutions around the world, our 2015 Summer
School reflects our institutional signature and our mission oriented toward economic and
technological development. Our professors and their research teams have put together an
innovative series of academic activities to make sure you have a memorable experience at ÉTS.

II. Before you leave home
Official documents
Before reading any further, please ensure that you have a valid passport. Your
passport should be valid for the entire duration of the summer school program
and for at least six months beyond your return date.
Depending on your citizenship, you may need a visa in order to enter Canada. It
is each student’s responsibility to verify the entry requirements to Canada based
on his or her citizenship, and, if necessary, to obtain an entry visa.

Due to the program’s short duration (less than 6 months), students accepted to
the ÉTS summer school program will not need to apply for a Quebec Acceptance

Certificate (CAQ) or Canadian Study Permit. Participants will be considered as «
visitors » to Canada participating in a short-term exchange program.
Please note that in order to finalize your registration at ÉTS, you will be required
to present your valid passport to the Registrar’s Office.
Admission letter
Students participating in the summer school program study at one of our partner
institutions and will be considered exchange students while at ÉTS.
You will receive or you will receive shortly your official letter of acceptance to the
summer school program by email. Students who need to apply for a visa to enter
Canada based on their country of citizenship will receive an additional support
letter from the International Coordination Office at ÉTS to include with their visa
application.
Important: upon arrival in Canada, you should present a printed version of your
admission letter to the border agent.
Tip
Make two photocopies of your passport identification page and leave a
copy at home with a relative or friend who is not traveling with you. Keep
the other copy with you when you travel and leave it in a safe place
separate from your passport.
Reserve your room in ÉTS residences
Students in the summer school program will be housed in an ÉTS residence hall.
On-campus housing will be available starting on 4 July 2015.
The cost for a room is $ 650 CDN and includes the following:





It is your responsibility to reserve your room and confirm your arrival date by

Make and confirm your travel arrangements
It is each student’s responsibility to make his or her own travel arrangements to
Montreal.
Once you have purchased your airline tickets, please send a copy of your travel
itinerary to [email protected]. A welcome kiosk will be set up in the
main pavilion on the ÉTS campus for summer school participants on Saturday,
July 4.
If you wish to arrive prior to your room being available in the residence hall, you
will need to make your own reservations for accommodations off-campus. Some

Travel insurance
Summer school program students will be covered by the mandatory Desjardins
health insurance starting July 6 and finishing July 31 (official program dates).
It is thus each participant’s responsibility to purchase travel insurance in the case
of accident or hospitalisation prior to the start of the summer school program and
after the summer school program. This coverage should include repatriation
coverage to your country of origin.
Mandatory health insurance at ÉTS
On July 6th, students will be taken to the Registrar’s Office to finalize their
registration. At this time, all students will be officially enrolled in, and be required
to pay for, the mandatory health insurance coverage offered by Desjardins. This
is the same health insurance coverage offered to international students in the
majority of universities in Quebec.
Please note that purchasing a health insurance policy elsewhere will not exempt
you from this requirement.
The cost of this coverage from July 6 to July 31, 2015, is $83 CDN.
You will pay for your health insurance at the ÉTS Registrar’s Office; payment is
accepted by credit card, certified check, postal order or money order. However,
the preferred method of payment, which will not require you to visit a bank or
post office, is to pay by credit card.
Please note that this coverage will be ineffective as of August 1, 2015. You must
thus have taken out a separate travel insurance plan to cover you before and
after the program.
Plan your budget
The summer school program is considered to be an exchange program for ÉTS
partner institutions; students are thus not billed tuition fees. Some fees are,
however, payable to ÉTS. The fees listed here are in Canadian dollars.

Clothing
Temperatures during the summer in Quebec can reach up to 30 degrees Celsius. We
do, however, recommend that you bring along at least one piece of warmer clothing
such as a fleece jacket, as evening temperatures can be variable.
The dress code for lectures and academic and leisure activities is casual. You may wish
to bring along business smart attire in the case of industrial visits and for the final
evening of the program.
Social activities are planned throughout the program, including two day trips outside of
Montreal. We suggest you bring along a pair of comfortable walking shoes and raingear.

Remember that certain items cannot be brought in your carry-on baggage on the plane.
Make sure you check restrictions with your airline before packing.
Personal hygiene items such as soap and shampoo can be easily purchased at
drugstores near the ÉTS campus.
If you take prescription medication, make sure you bring it in its original packaging, and
bring enough for the duration of the program. In Canada, pharmacists are only
authorized to fill prescriptions written by a Canadian physician.

III. Arriving in Montreal
Transportation from the airport
ÉTS cannot arrange transportation for summer school students between the
airport and the campus. However, you can easily travel from the airport to
downtown Montreal using public or private transportation.
ÉTS is located in downtown Montreal, approximately 25 kilometers east of the
Montreal Trudeau International Airport.
Service between the airport and downtown is made easy by taking the 747 bus
operated by the Société de transport de Montreal (STM). This bus runs 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week. Tickets can be purchased at the airport for $10. The
closest stop to ÉTS on the 747 bus route is at the intersection of René-Lévesque
and Peel streets.
If you would prefer to take a taxi from the airport, a fixed rate of $ 40 CDN
applies. This amount does not include the tip (plan on 15 %).
On the STM website, you will find information about bus routes as well as a map
of the metro system. The two closest metro stations to ÉTS are Lucien L’Allier
and Bonaventure on the orange line.
The ÉTS Campus
The main buildings of the ÉTS campus are located at 1100 Notre-Dame Ouest
(West), on the corner of Peel Street.
Pavilion A is on the south corner of this intersection; Pavilion B is on the north
corner. The program activities of the Sumemr School will take place in these two
buildings.
ÉTS residence halls are located at several nearby locations. Students in the
summer program will be housed in the residence hall located at ETS residence
Phase 3, 425 De la Montagne.

Once your travel itinerary is finalized, please remember to send a copy to
[email protected].
A welcome kiosk will be open during the afternoon Saturday, July 4th, based on
students’ planned arrival times, as well as on Sunday morning, July 5th. The kiosk
will be located inside Pavilion A, at the entrance to the main hall.
If you arrive on campus during the kiosk’s opening hours, this should be your first
stop. You will pick up your welcome packet and students will be there to meet
you and accompany you to the dorms.
Check-in to ÉTS Residence Halls
Rooms will be available in the ÉTS residence hall starting at time on date.
Upon checking in, you will receive detailed information on the rules and
regulations of living in university housing and will sign your lease.
Should you arrive outside of the kiosk opening hours, please go to the security
office located at the main entrance of Pavilion A to pick up your key.

The housing office is located at 420 Eleanor Street (corner of Notre-Dame West),
just above the Metro grocery store. Regular office hours are Monday through
Friday from 8:30 am to 12 pm and 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

V. Non-academic program information
Social activities and weekly check-in
A team of student ambassadors will be organizing social activities for you during the
summer school program.
The majority of these activities are free of charge.
Participation in these activities is considered entirely optional.
Students may also of course propose activities outside of course hours to discover
Montreal together (cost to be assumed by the participants).
The final weekend of the program (July 25-26) is considered to be a free weekend where
participants can organize an activity on their own (cost to be assumed by the
participants). The student ambassadors will of course be able to offer suggestions of
activities or places to visit. Please note that travel outside of Canada during the official
program dates is not authorized (ex.: United States).
Each Thursday at 1pm, the ambassadors will hold a « check-in » where you will be
invited to offer feedback on your experience. This is also the moment to confirm whether
you wish to participate in the day trips organized on the first two weekends of the
program.
Parlez-vous français?
You are likely aware that ÉTS is located in Montreal, the largest city in Quebec, one of
the 10 Canadian provinces. French is the official language of Quebec. While many
Montrealers are in fact bilingual (French-English), it is important to keep in mind that
ÉTS is a francophone university. Outside of the summer school program, you will
probably not hear a lot of English spoken on the campus! You might thus like to take a
bit of time prior to arriving to learn a few key phrases in French, or even consider
bringing a basic phrase book with you. People will always be happy to hear you speak
or greet them in French!
Staying in touch with friends and family
Due to the length of the summer school program, you likely will not want to purchase a
phone plan or cellphone.

When you first arrive at ÉTS, if you need to access a computer to send an email to your
family to indicate your safe arrival, you can come to the Library (open 9 am to 6 pm on
weekends) or the Student Services Office (open Monday-Thursday from 8:30 am to 5
pm and Friday until 4 pm).
One of the easiest ways to keep in touch with friends and family throughout the program
would be through an application such as Skype, which you can download to your
computer.
We recommend that you have a conversation with your family prior to departure about
the frequency of your communications. Please keep in mind that participating in a
summer school program implies a structured environment and busy schedule, and it
may not be possible for you to communicate as frequently as you are used to.
VI. On-campus practical information
ÉTS Student Card
Your ÉTS student card with photo will serve as your identity card during the program.
Please carry this card with you at all times. The card will give you access to services
such as the Library and the Athletic Center, as well as to the laboratories you will be
using. If you plan on eating frequently at the ÉTS cafeteria, you can use your student
card to purchase a meal plan.
Wi-Fi Access and ÉTS email account
To access Wi-Fi on the ÉTS campus, you will need to know your universal access code
and password. These codes are included in your admission letter to the Summer School
program.
Summer school students will be issued an ÉTS email address and will be expected to
verify this account during the program. Official communication from university staff will
be sent to this email account.

Library (Bibliothèque)
The ÉTS Library is located on the ground floor of Pavilion A. Its mission is to provide
students with spaces and facilities conducive to study and research. In addition to
lending books, magazines and reference documents, the library has a vast collection of
electronic documents including scientific articles on specialized topics in engineering and
related disciplines.
In the library itself, you will find rooms specifically designed for teamwork as well as
individual study spaces equipped with electrical outlets. You will have access to library
services thanks to your ÉTS student card. If you need to print documents, you can do so
in the library. Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance from the library staff.
Cafeteria
Please note that unless otherwise indicated, meals are not included in the summer
school program.
You will find a wide variety of meal and snack options in the ÉTS cafeteria, located on
the ground floor of Pavilion A. Students interested in eating in the cafeteria on a regular
basis should consider purchasing a meal plan using their student card in order to receive
a 10 % discount. Please note that the cafeteria has restricted hours on the weekends.
As you will be living in university housing, it will also be quite easy to return « home » for
lunch during the week, or you may choose to bring your lunch with you to eat in dining
area by the cafeteria where microwaves are available for students to use.
International Coordination Office (BCI) and Recruitment
and Programs Promotion Office (BREPP)
The teams in the International Coordination Office (BCI) and Recruitment and Programs
Promotion Office (BREPP) not only play a key role in the internationalization of ÉTS, but
they are also key resource people for summer school program students. Their offices
are located on the third floor of Pavilion A, access from room A-3700.

Student Services Office (Services aux étudiants)
As an exchange student, you will have access to activities and services offered by the
Student Services Office (room A-2700, second floor of Pavilion A). The office’s mission
is to create a dynamic on-campus environment that supports student growth, success
and development. Amongst other services, students have access to free and confidential
counseling services, whether related to academic, personal or interpersonal issues.
Co-op Bookstore
Located at the main entrance to Pavilion B, the Co-op Bookstore sells books and course
notes as well as ÉTS paraphernalia such as t-shirts, electronics and general school
supplies.
The 100 génies restaurant (Resto-Pub Le 100 génies)
The ÉTS student association (AÉÉTS) manages and operates a popular restaurant on
the ground floor of Pavilion B, Le 100 génies. The resto-pub is the perfect place to meet
with friends for lunch or to get together after class!
L’Ingénium convenience store (Dépanneur l’Ingénium)
The ÉTS student association also manages and operates the Ingénium convenience
store located at 305 Peel Street. Open 7 days a week, the convenience store is where
you can purchase snack food.
Athletic Center (Centre sportif)
Located on the third floor of Pavilion B, the Athletic Center offers students and staff all
manners of ways in which to stay fit! Your student card will give you access to free gym
activities, such as badminton, basketball and soccer during designated hours.

If you wish to use the workout rooms with weights and exercise machines, you will need
to purchase a membership. Please note that first-time members are also required to
meet and pay for a fitness evaluation with a trainer.
We do not have a swimming pool on campus, but students who wish to use a municipal
pool located approximately 1 kilometer from campus can inquire about access at the
Athletic Center.
VII. Off-campus practical information
Grocery stores and markets
The closest grocery store to ÉTS is Metro, conveniently located on the ground floor of
the university residence hall located on the corner of Eleanor and Notre-Dame West
streets.
Another grocery store relatively near ÉTS is Super C, located at 147 Atwater Avenue (by
Atwater Market).
Even if only to visit, you will certainly want to take in Atwater and Jean Talon Markets
during your stay, where you can find speciality products and fresh, local produce.
Atwater Market is located a couple of kilometers west of ÉTS along the Lachine Canal.
Jean Talon Market is located at 7070 Henri-Julien.
Banks
Thanks to ÉTS’ location in downtown Montreal, it is easy to access banks with automatic
teller machines (ATM) which distribute cash. We suggest you check with your bank in
your home country to see if they have an agreement with any banks in Canada in order
to save on transaction fees. The Caisse-Populaire Desjardins has an ATM located on
the ÉTS campus.
In order to avoid having your credit card blocked, make sure you confirm with your bank
prior to departure that you will be using your card in Canada. Don’t forget that on the first
day of the program, in order to finalize your registration, you must pay for your health
insurance fees by credit card at the ÉTS Registrar’s Office.

Public transportation
Montreal has an extensive public transportation network, including buses, subway and
commuter trains. The closest subway stations to ÉTS are Bonaventure and Lucien
L’Allier on the orange line.
Thanks to living in a university residence hall, you will likely not be taking public
transportation on a daily basis. If you choose to participate in optional social activities,
some of these will require taking public transportation. Refer to fares for the subway on
the Société de transport de Montréal website to decide whether purchasing a monthly
pass makes sense for you (regular price). It is also possible to purchase evening
passes.
You will find a vast network of cycling paths in Montreal. If you enjoy cycling, you might
consider using the BIXI system which allows you to rent a bicycle for short-term use and
drop it off near your destination. A BIXI station is located in front of Pavilion B, and using
the cycling path by the Lachine Canal you can reach Old Montreal from ÉTS within 15
minutes.
Post office
The closest Canada Post to the ÉTS campus is located inside the Uniprix drugstore at
the Gare Centrale (Central Train Station) at 895 de la Gauchetière Ouest. This is an
approximate 15 minute walk from campus, heading north on Peel Street and east on de
la Gauchetière. The drugstore is located inside the train station by the McDonald’s.
Shopping
ÉTS is located close to many shopping centers in downtown Montreal: the Eaton Center,
La Baie, Place Ville-Marie, Place Montreal-Trust.
Sainte-Catherine Street, renowned for shopping, is a 15 minute walk from campus,
heading north up Peel Street.

Restaurants
Several restaurants and cafés are located on Notre-Dame Ouest right by the ÉTS
campus, including a Subway, Okane (sushi), Presse café (sandwiches, soups, salads)
and Amir (Lebanese cuisine). Take-out items are also available at the Metro grocery
store.
You will find many more restaurants further down Notre-Dame in the surrounding
neighborhood… not to mention the wide range of restaurants and cafés in Montreal.
Enjoy exploring!
Tax and tipping
When should you leave a tip, to whom, and how much? Generally speaking, in
restaurants, you should leave a minimum of 15 % tip for the service. If the service is
particularly good, feel free to leave more.
You should also count on tipping workers in the service industry such as taxi drivers,
barmen, hotel housekeepers and concierges.
In Quebec, most of the time, the prices you will see advertised do not include the sales
tax. This is also the case in restaurants. The provincial sales tax (TVQ) and the federal
goods and services tax (TPS) will add an approximate 15 % to your bill.
Drugstores
In Canada certain medications are available over-the-counter without a prescription from
a doctor. You can always ask a pharmacist for advice if you have a non-emergency
health issue. You will find a wide range of personal and hygiene items for sale in
drugstores.
Proxim is the closest drugstore to the ÉTS campus, located at 1245 Notre-Dame Ouest,
just across the street from the Metro grocery store. A Jean-Coutu drugstore is slated to
open in the new pavilion on campus.
Other drugstore chains you will find in Quebec include Brunet, Uniprix and Familiprix.

Health: non-emergency situation
We do not have a medical clinic on the ÉTS campus.
If you are not feeling well but will you not be missing class (ex: you have a headache, a
cold or runny nose), we suggest you go to a nearby drugstore and speak with a
pharmacist in order to purchase appropriate over-the-counter medication. Please note
that this type of medication is not covered by Desjardins health insurance.
If you are sick and need to miss planned academic activities, please communicate with
the BCI office at [email protected] in order to let them know of the situation.
In Quebec, the easiest way to consult a physician is to first call the Info-Santé hotline.
This hotline is free of charge and available 24/24. Services are available in English.
When you dial 811, you will speak with a nurse who will offer you advice and instruct you
on the closest walk-in clinic, (no appointment necessary) including its opening hours.
A community health clinic (CLSC) located relatively near the ÉTS campus is at 3833
Notre-Dame Ouest (tel. 514-933-7541).
In the case of emergency
In the case of emergency, throughout Canada and the United States, 911 is the number
to dial to be directed to ambulance, fire and police services. Do NOT call this number in
the case of a non-emergency.
On the ÉTS campus, in the case of emergency, you can dial 55 from any internal
telephone in order to speak with the security office. The security agents will then be able
to communicate with the police, fire or ambulance services as required.
