FEST - NEW DIRECTORS | NEW FILMS FESTIVAL
FEST - New Directors | New Films Festival is a unique celebration of new cinema and new
filmmakers. It´s an annual festival taking place in the city of Espinho.
The event creates a space where young promising filmmakers can show and promote their
work, as well as further their knowledge and share opportunities, creating new audiences
for independent cinema.
FEST also includes FEST - Training Ground an FEST - Pitching Forum, paralell events to
the film festival, that gather the highest established film professionals and young
filmmakers who are starting to draw their way.
Nowadays, FEST is one of the biggest events in the world dedicated new filmmakers drawing together the most influential film opinion-makers and those that will be in the
future.
This year FEST reaches its 11th edition, which will take place between the 22nd and the 29th
of June 2015, in Centro Multimeios de Espinho, a modern infrastructure of renowned
quality, equipped with two screening rooms, an IMAX screen, a planetarium, a café and
free-access Wi-Fi.

FESTIVAL PROGRAMME
Our programme consists of 7 different festival sections:
Golden Lynx Competition, a Feature film competition which includes a fiction and a
documentary competition. This section is dedicated to filmmakers in their first or second
feature film.
Silver Lynx Competition for Short films, which has special prizes dedicated to each
of the following genres: fiction, documentary, experimental and animation. This section is
dedicated to filmmakers up to 30 years old.
FEST Sound, which consists of screenings dedicated to music, with documentaries about
music and concerts.
Flavours of the World, a section dedicated to different country filmographies, with the
goal of letting our audience discover different views on film. The selected countries for the
2015 edition will be announced soon.
Be Kind Rewind, a section dedicated to the theme of the festival and presents a series
of films under this spotlight. This year's the theme will be “Revolution”.
NEXXT, a section dedicated to the freshest minds in the film world, where we select film
from filmmakers who are still in film school, and we present their best productions.
FEST Social, a series of social responsibility programmes, that include: Open Air
Screenings in underprivileged neighbourhoods; Children’s Matinées; Senior Film Sessions;
Film literacy activities.

FEST - TRAINING GROUND
FEST – Training Ground is an educational event where new emerging talents from all over
the world come together for a week to participate in a deluxe learning experience which
includes workshops, masterclasses, lectures and debates led by top experts of renowned
success.
Here, every field of the filmmaking process is covered, from directing, editing, producing
and screenwriting to production design, sound design, creative research, distribution,
among many others.
FEST – Training Ground was designed to allow each participant to organize their own
individual program, according to their interests and priorities.
In just one open space (with no “VIP areas”), FEST – Training Ground ensures the
opportunity to make new contacts with people of various profiles and perspectives. This
exchange of experiences is extremely important in the world of cinema, and FEST –
Training Ground offers a privileged entry into this dimension of the filmmaking industry.
The gathering of talents and energies can really be the vehicle to the creation of projects
in common, making FEST – Training Ground not just an educational experience but
something more productive as well.
FEST – Training Ground encourages its participants to enjoy the whole week full of
activities.
The event will take place between the 23rd and 28th of June, in Centro Multimeios de
Espinho, parallel to FEST - New Directors | New Films Festival.

FEST - PITCHING FORUM
FEST Pitching Forum is a unique platform for upcoming filmmakers to present their
projects to top industry producers, financiers, fund managers and investors who are
looking to finance, produce or develop new projects.
In a 5 minute pitch, each participant will be asked to unwrap their project, in whatever way
seems more appropriate.
Inside FEST Pitching forum there will be a section for training, the forum itself, and the
Industry Meetings.
At the training the 28 selected Scriptwriters, Writer-directors and producers will participate
in a 4-day training-program, managed by 4 Experts.
On the following days, participants will pitch their film projects in front of a panel of 44
Experts divided into 4 sessions: Feature Film; Short Film; Documentary and TV Series.
At the end of each pitch, there will be 10 minutes for feedback and discussion from the
experts. At the end of FEST Pitching Forum, each participant will partake in an exclusive
meeting with all the experts, for more private feedback and counseling about their
project.
The experts will be invited during two days to take part in the pitching session. The
experts will also be present in the Industry Meetings where they will be available for one
on one meetings with the participants.
The Industry Meetings will also be available for non-selected projects/participants, as long
as approved by the expert.
FEST – Pitching Forum will take part between the 23rd and the 27th of June, in the
Espinho’s Municipal Library (Biblioteca Municipal José Marmelo e Silva), also a part of
FEST – New Directors | New Films Festival.

ESPINHO
Espinho is the perfect city to host an event with the characteristics of FEST – New
Directors | New Cinema. The city is located in a privileged position for its environmental
attributes and landscapes, and its accessibility to the city of Porto.
The festival’s participants come for the cinema and avail themselves to a beach and
cinema vacation, temporarily reinvigorating the city’s tourism.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE
The official language of FEST is English. A great part of its speakers and participants are
foreign, thus communication is held entirely in English.
It’s a unique experience, visiting Centro Multimeios de Espinho, near where Espinho’s
Centennial Fair takes place, and to be greeted by an vibrant international environment,
where people of all nationalities meet and exchange ideas.
From the annual 400 FEST – Training Ground participants (participants with a pass to
attend masterclasses, workshops and film screenings) close to half are international.
Numbers such as these make FEST the most international festival in Portugal.
In 2014 FEST brought to Espinho people from more than 38 countries from all over the
world.

HISTORIAL
2014
24th to the 26th of June 2014
This year FEST had more than 70 films in competition, from more than 20 countries. FESTTraining Ground had 450 plus participants as well, from all the five continents, with more
than 20 masterclasses and workshops, led by figures such as Michael Katz, producer of
Michael Haneke;, Chris Dickens, Editor of “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008); Eddy Joseph,
sound supervisor who worked with Bernardo Bertolucci, Neil Jordan, Alan Parker and Tim
Burton; Gareth Wiley, producer of “Matchpoint” and Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and
Woody Allen’s producer in Europe; among many others!
Pitching Forum was once more one of the festival’s highlights, where in five minutes,
participants could expose their projects and at the end the producers, all with a vast
experience, gave their feedback. This year the international panel included Michael Katz;
Gareth Wiley; Jarle Bjorkes, director of the Norwegian fund Filmkraft; Scandar Copti,
award-winning director of “Ajami”; and many more. As for the Portuguese we disposed of
a vast list: Original Features; Real Ficção; Anexo 82; Individeos; Lightbox; FilmesDaMente;
Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual; Papaveronoir Filmes; Filmógrafo; Fado Filmes;
Cimbalino Filmes and Sardinha em Lata.
2013
2013 was a special year. We saw the festival grow, not only in numbers but in relevance as
well. FEST – Training Ground guests included Melissa Leo, Academy Award-winning
actress from films such as David O’Russel’s “the Fighter” and Courtney Hunt’s “Frozen
River”; Peter Webber, BAFTA-nominated British Director, known for “Girl with a Pearl
Earring” and “Hannibal Rising”; Christian Berger, Academy Award-nominated
cinematographer, known for his work alongside Michael Haneke in films such as “The
White Ribbon; “Caché” and “The Piano Teacher”; Tariq Anwar, a BAFTA and Academy
Award-nominated British editor for films such as “American Beauty”, “The King’s Speech”
and “Revolutionary Road”; Tim Corrie, the director of the BAFTAs and one of the most
renowned and influent talent agents in Europe.
FEST Pitching Forum also reached a higher status a one of the key sections of the festival.

2012
1st to the 8th of June 2012
FEST 2012 was once again a big success. Breaking once more records for audience and
participants of FEST – Training Ground, the event which included a new key section, a
long-sought goal, the creation of FEST - Pitching Forum. Responding to a longstanding
flaw of the local filmmaking industry, FEST invited numerous producers, distributors and
possible investors to take part in a long and intensive of “pitching sessions”, in which
participants had the chance to, in five minutes, present their projects.
Answering a clear deficiency within the local film industry FEST invited a large number of
producers, distributors and financiers to attend a long and intensive day of pitching
sessions, where the participants had the chance to spend 5 minutes presenting their
projects.
Training Ground once again included a wide range of guest speakers, including Martin
Walsh (Oscar winning editor), Fernando Trueba (Oscar winning Spanish legendary
director), Anders Osteergard ( Danish director of the famous documentary “Burma VJ),
Brian Grant (a pioneer in the music video world), João Pedro Rodriguez (one of the most
influential Portuguese directors), Kjartan Sveinsson (Soundtrack composer and keyboard
player of Sigur Ròs), Sylvie Landra (Editor of the 5th Element and Leon), only to name a
few.
On the film festival front the event also marked a big jump, with over 150 short and feature
films on display in the most complete program FEST has ever had. Films like Runar
Runarsson´s Volcano (which ended up taking the biggest prize), the Japanese sensation
About the Pink Sky, or the Dutch experimental extravaganza 170Hz were part of an
impressive Silver Castle competition that included 10 feature films altogether. The shorts
competition was no less remarkable.
2011
26th of June to the 3rd of July 2011
The last edition of FEST was a tremendous success. In terms of audience we witnessed a
notable increase, reaching a total of 17.120 people in all the activities. The program was

the focus of much attention, having included the national openings of films such as
“Hanna” by Joe Wright and “Obselidia” by Dianne Bell. New award categories were
created, such as the prize for best Non Fiction Long Feature. The program also included
some of the best works from some of our partner schools. Training Ground also grew
significantly with 353 registrations. The event brought to Espinho figures like Eugenio
Caballero (Oscar winning art director of films such as “Pan´s Labirynth”), much acclaimed
Portuguese Cinematographer Eduardo Serra (twice nominated for an Oscar), Colin Arthur
(Special effects veteran) , Scandar Copti (winner of the Golden Camera award in Cannes
and one of the most promising filmmakers in the middle east), among many others.
2011 was a particularly significant year, as the event grew in a sustainable way, attracting
much attention in the national and international media, at the same time developing a
brilliant program, providing a unique and indispensable in the development of the
audiovisual industry.
2010
20th to the 27th of June 2010
This year FEST continued its path to greatness.
The usual audience growth was a great victory with a total of 14.816 people.
Training ground saw the most complete guest speaker list so far , in its 23 sessions, with
prestigious names such as Larry Smith, director of photography of Stanley Kubrik´s Eyes
Wide Shut; Hervé Schneid, the French editor deeply connected to the success of Jean
Pierre Jeunet, having edited films like Amelie, Delicatessen and Alien: Resurrection;
Christian Frei, a big name in documentary filmmaking, nominated for an Oscar for War
Photographer; David Macmillan, a three time Oscar winner in Sound Mixing, who worked
in films like The Right Stuff, Natural Born killers and The Firm; Nancy bishop, Casting
director for several Hollywood studios; Antonio Pedro Vasconcelos, one of the most
popular Portuguese film directors; Bruno Chatelin, director of filmfestival.com, the biggest
web film directory, and an expert in distribution and financing; Etgar Karet, winner of the
golden Camera award in Cannes; among others.
1633 films were registered in the festival, and 84 were carefully selected, guaranteeing a
quality program. In the Silver Castle competition FEST screened two of the most

successful films of the year, Kyle Patrick Alvarez`s Easier with Practice and Debra Granik`s
Winter`s Bone.
Finally FEST also opened a new section entitled Filmmakers Corner, a space focused on
improvised screenings of films brought and produced by the participants.

SPEAKERS’ BIOGRAPHIES
ÀNGELA BOSCH
With international expertise in the filmmaking industry, acquired throughout her career,
Àngela Bosh is an advisor in the fields of Promotion, Distribution and International CoProduction to the Spanish Audiovisual Industry, and a sales consultant in cinema and
television for international companies.
She was the director of Catalan Films and TV (2003-2011) increasing the distribution of
Catalan production and its recognition in international festivals. Previously she worked in
the Spanish production company Lolafilms as an international sales director.
BARNEY PILLING
Editor Barney Pilling began his film career as a location scout on 24 Hour Party People, in
2002. A few years later, became an editor, and worked on a string of narratively complex
films, including An Education in 2009, and Never Let me Go, adaptation from Kazuo
Ishiguro’s difficult, daring novel, and One Day, in 2011, based on David Nichols.
He has twice been nominated for a BAFTA Award, for his editing on episodes of the hit
series Spooks (titled MI-5 in the U.S.) and Life on Mars. On the latter, he edited the first
two installments, both helmed by Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day director Bharat Nalluri.
The duo also teamed for the miniseries Tsunami: The Aftermath.
The first of Mr. Pilling's two years of work on another tv show, As If, earned him a Royal
Television Society Award. He has also edited episodes of Hustle, Sea of Souls, and Hotel
Babylon; and two seasons of the series No Angels.
Pilling’s most recent work was on Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, which
garnered him worldwide recognition, as well as nominations for Best Editor in both the
Academy Awards (Oscars) and the BAFTAs.
CAMILLE MCCURRY
British agent in one of the biggest talent agencies in the world, United Artists, Camille
McCurry represents many names in the industry, from screenwriters like Henrietta and

Jessica Ashworth, Alex Garcia Lopez and William Brookfield, to directors such as Ben Bolt
and Paul Seed, among many other successful talents in British cinema and television.
CYNTHIA HARGRAVE
Independent Texan producer who, along with her husband Kit Carson, was responsible for
the production of films such as Wes Anderson’s “Bottle Rocket” and “Hurricane Streets”.
Cynthia Hargrave is also responsible for the production of the digital documentary series
“Africa Diary”, innovative in its exclusive use of the Nokia N93 and N95 camera phones, 12
“shorts” which blur the line between journalism and documental filmmaking.
EDDY JOSEPH
Eddy Joseph is one of the industry’s greater names in Sound. As a supervising sound
editor Eddy Joseph is in charge of overseeing the entire post-production sound crew,
including the music editor, sound editor, Foley artist, and ADR editor. Eddy Joseph has
been a Supervising Sound Editor for nearly 30 years. His first major movie as Supervising
Sound Editor was Alan Parker’s “Shoot the Moon” followed by his “Pink Floyd The Wall”
for which he received his first BAFTA award. He has worked with a number of highly
acclaimed directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci, Neil Jordan, Louis Malle, Anthony
Minghella, Tim Burton, Paul Greengrass, among many others. His film credits include
“Pink Floyd The Wall”, “Angel Heart”, “Batman”, “The Commitments”, “The Crying
Game”, “Little Buddha”, “Interview with the Vampire”, “Evita”, “Enemy at the
Gates”, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, “Cold Mountain”, “Corpse
Bride”, “United 93″, “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace”. To Training
Ground he will bring his years of expertise, in what will be, with doubt an unforgettable
masterclass.
EMJAY RECHSTEINER
Graduated in film school in New York, with a degree in History and Communications in
Amsterdam University, Emjay Rechsteiner presides the jury of Netherlands Film Festival, as
well as having produced and co-produced innumerous films, commercials and
documentaries, such as the Audience Award-winner at Cannes “Pauline & Paulette”,

“Moonlight” (winner of Best European Film at Hollywood Film Festival), “Suzy Q” and
“Buenos Aires Vice Versa”, and more recently Lee Tamahori’s “The Devil’s Double”.
Emjay Rechsteiner also works a film curator and consulter for the digitalization and online
film releases (based on the biography by Staccato Films).
FERNANDO TRUEBA
Fernando Trueba is a Spanish film director and producer. Between 1974 and 1979 he
worked as a film critic for Spain's leading daily newspaper El País. In 1980, he founded the
monthly film magazine Casablanca, which he edited and directed during its first two years.
He is the author of Diccionario (Planeta 1997, Plot 2004, Galaxia Guttenberg 2006) and the
editor of Diccionario del Jazz Latino (SGAE, 1998). Among other awards, he won the
Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film with Belle Époque in 1994, the Goya
Award for Best Director three times and a Silver Bear for Year of Enlightment at the 37th
Berlin International Film Festival.
GARETH WILEY
Gareth Wiley began his professional life in Finance. In 1993 he begins his career as a film
producer, and fully dedicates to this new activity in 2002. In the 13 years since he has
worked, amongst others, with two Oscar winning directors: Woody Allen and Alex Gibney.
The working relationship with Woody Allen proved very fruitful, producing a Golden
Globe nomination with Match Point, and a Golden Globe award for Best Motion Picture
with Vicky Christina Barcelona. Wiley is also the CEO of Screen Advantage
(www.screenadvantage.com), an online app for producers, designed as a tool for them to
create financing plans that will be understandable by financiers. In the Training Ground,
Gareth Wiley’s masterclass will explore the theme of film production and funding.
GUILLERMO GARCIA-RAMOS
Guillermo Garcia – Ramos began his career in cinema as a scriptwriter and a director of
fiction films, but was directing documentaries, such as “De Kuleshov a Berlanga” and
“Tenis con JLG - Buscando a Godard” that he became one of the most famous and
prestigious Spanish documentarists. García Ramos has frequently produced content for
the Spanish public TV network TVE, as well as independently producing short, long
features and collaborating directly with different film festivals around the world.

GUILLERMO NAVARRO
A frequent collaborator of Guillermo del Toro and Robert Rodriguez, Guillermo Navarro
has been working as a Director of Photography in Hollywood since 1993.
He won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography in 2007 for his work on Del Toro’s
Pan’s Labyrinth.
Guillermo was born in Mexico City and is a member of the American Cinematographers
Society.
His résumé features a wide array of films, such as Del Toro’s Cronos, the Hellboy films, The
Devil’s Backbone and Pacific Rim, Robert Rodriguez’s Desperado and From Dusk Till
Dawn, Quentin Tarantino’s Classic Jackie Brown, the Night at the Museum Saga, Twilight:
Breaking Dawn Parts I & II and the Jack White/Jimmy Page documentary It Might Get
Loud.
His directorial debut was the music video “Blue Eyed Sailor” for musician Mia Maestro in
2012, and since then he has also directed episodes of the TV shows Hannibal and The
Bridge.
His upcoming project is the cinematography for the film adaptation of Martin Amis’
modern classic novel London Fields.
IRENA TASKOVSY
Irena Taskovski is a film producer and sales agent. She has produced several short films
and documentaries, including multiple award winners Village B, dir. Filip Remunda (Best
Documentary at Karlovy Vary in 2002) and Czech Dream dir.s Vit Klusak and Filip Remunda
(Best Czech Documentary 2004 Jihlava IDFF, FIRPESCI prize at IFF Ljubljana 2004, Best
Documentary San Francisco Film Fest Denmark 2004). Originally from Bosnia, Irena
studied in Prague, graduating from the Film Academy (FAMU). She has also studied at the
Sam Spiegel Film and TV School in Jerusalem and obtained a Masters degree from the
National Film & Television School in London, UK. In addition to running her own film
company, Taskovsky Films, Irena has worked in development and financing at London
based production company Autonoumus (UK producers of Bosnian film No Mans Land,
D.Tanovic), and in the marketing and publicity department of Tartan Films Distribution
London, focusing on independent foreign language films. Irena is a lecturer at the Prague
Film Academy (FAMU), and tutor at the Prague Institute of Documentary Film, as expert
on international film sales and distribution, with the focus on European creative

documentary cinema. She has also lectured professionals about Marketing and
Promotional strategies and distribution.
MANUEL CLARO
With a degree in Political Sciences and International Relations in Universidade Nova de
Lisboa, Manuel Claro is in charge of the Centro de Informação Europa Criativa (Creative
Europe Information Centre), having been an assessor at the Direcção Municipal de Cultura
da Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, and Executive Coordenator at MEDIA Desk Portugal.
MARK COULIER
Two-time Academy Award laureate for his work on “The Iron Lady” (which also garnered
him a BAFTA) and “Grand Budapest Hotel”, Mark Coulier is the master of make-up
prosthetics for film., having worked on six of the 8 “Harry Potter” films, “X-Men First
Class”, Danny Boyle’s “Sunshine”, “Mummy Returns”, among other filmmaking marks,
and TV show such as “Merlin” and “Little Britain”, in a career which started in 1987 as a
freelance sculptor for films in London, which quickly got him hired for films sich as “Alien
III” and “Star Wars: Episode I”. Mark Coulier is creative director for Coulier Creatures FX,
one of the biggest make-up effects companies in Europe. Coulier is currently working with
director Ron Howard on the film “The Heart of the Sea”.
NUNO FONSECA (ICA)
The ICA is the Portuguese national film support agency.
Nuno is a senior adviser for European and policy affairs since 2000, and has been vicepresident of the Institute (2005-2007). He deals also with international coproduction,
including project evaluation, as a member of the Board of Management of EURIMAGES.
He has been an adviser of the Secretary of State for Culture (1997-2000) after a
professional career in a EU institution.
Nuno has also translated several literary and philosophical works and has been a creative
author for radio.
He is a member of the European Film Academy.
PAUL MILLER

Paul Miller is an independent producer working in the United States, Europe and the
Middle East. From May 2012 until October 2013 Miller was Director of Film Financing at
the Doha Film Institute in Qatar. Miller oversaw a $2.5M education training programme, a
$1m global grants fund and managed a $25M film financing fund. Prior to this Miller
produced The Birder’s Guide to Everything directed by Rob Meyer, Babygirl, written and
directed by Macdara Vallely, produced with Samson Films and the Irish Film Board. During
this period Miller produced a feature length documentary, Poor Consuelo Conquers the
World, with Les Films d’Ici for ARTE in 2011. Miller also Exec-Produced the feature length
documentary, The Man Who Drew the Future with Una Films and ARTE. From 2002 - 2009
Miller was Head of Film Production at Crossroads Films, where he produced Snow Angels,
which was released by Warner Independent Pictures in 2008. The film was written and
directed by David Gordon Green and stars Sam Rockwell and Kate Becksinale and Golden
Globe nominated, and A Love Song For Bobby Long starring John Travolta and Scarlett
Johansson, released by Lionsgate Films in 2006. Previous films include John Sayles’
feature The Secret of Roan Inish (1994), the Academy Award nominated Lone Star (1996)
and Golden Globe nominated Men with Guns (1997). Miller also produced Prozac Nation,
directed by Erik Skjoldbaerg’s (“Insomnia”) and starring Chistina Ricci, Jessica Lange and
Anne Heche. The film was released by Miramax.
PETER DOYLE
Peter is one of film industry’s most distinguished supervising digital colorists, having
handled digital color grading on the industry’s two largest “tent-pole” franchises in movie
history, The Lord of the Rings trilogy; and the last six Harry Potter films. He has also colorgraded eight of the 30 highest-grossing films of all time.
Peter has carried out remarkable handling of digital color-grading for Academy Awardwinning cinematographers and directors such as Andrew Lesnie and Bruno Delbonnel,
Peter Jackson and Tim Burton to name but a few. Among the films he worked on are
"Matrix", "King Kong", "Inside Llewyn Davis", "The Edge of Tomorrow", "The Theory of
Everything", "Big Eyes".
Over the last decade, Peter Doyle has focused exclusively on digital grading for feature
films. A strong advocate that colour design and grading should be integrated into the

production creative process, Doyle developed a pipeline that centralizes colormanagement of a film from dailies, including color control of VFX plates, through to final
release printing, DCI and video deliverables.
He has worked closely with camera manufacturers, such as Arri. Doyle continues to be an
industry leader in defining and also interpreting values in the digital realm.(Biography by

RACHEL ROBEY
Rachel Robey leads feature film support and British Council Film’s relationship with film
festivals, and oversees our work in the Middle East and North Africa, sub Saharan Africa.
She is a producer herself, having formed Wellington Films in 2000 with her producing
partner Alastair Clark. Their debut feature film production was Paul Andrew Williams’
BAFTA nominated London to Brighton which was awarded the Best Achievement In
Production at the 2006 British Independent Film Awards. Their subsequent productions
and co-productions have screened worldwide at festivals including Cannes Critics Week,
Toronto International Film Festival, Sundance, South By Southwest and Berlin, and have
won numerous awards included Best Film at BAFTA Scotland for Justin Molotnikov’s
Crying With Laughter in 2010. Rachel’s latest production is A Man’s Story which chronicles
twelve years in the life of superstar fashion designer Ozwald Boateng, which was released
in 2012.
SCANDAR COPTI
Scandar is a Palestinian director, nominated for an Oscar™ and winner of the Caméra
d’Or, the Festival de Cannes award for best first feature film, for his film “Ajami” (2009). His
work with non professional actors is remarkable and he is one of the most ground
breaking actor directors of our time. To Training Ground he will bring us a series of
workshops about acting and directing. These are really unmissable workshop for every
actor, director or for anyone curious about the art of acting.
SEAN GASCOINE
Working for one of the biggest talent agencies in the world, United Artists, and also film
and stage actor, Sean Gascoine represents numerous successful talents, from

screenwriters and playwrights to directors and actors of film and television. Having worked
as an agent at Lou Colson Associates, and with a career spanning 15 years, Sean Gascoine
talks openly about his job at United Agents, the agent-client relation, his long-lasting
career. He says he starts every day by reading a script and has a varied taste, from big
commercial films to “art house” auteur films.
STEVEN NOBLE
Steven Noble graduated with distinction from York College of Art. He spent several years
designing for the theater; working with noted London fashion houses; and styling shoots
for such magazines as The Face and ID. All of these creative collaborations shaped his
affinity for costume design as a vocation.
He was costume designer on Michael Winterbottom’s 24 Hour Party People, starring Steve
Coogan. His subsequent films as costume designer have included Christopher Smith’s
Severance and Triangle; Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go, starring Keira Knightley, Carey
Mulligan, and Andrew Garfield; Andrea Arnold’s Wuthering Heights; Hossein Amini’s The
Two Faces of January, also for Working Title Films, starring Kirsten Dunst and Viggo
Mortensen; and Jonathan Glazer’s much-talked-about Under the Skin, starring Scarlett
Johansson.
More recently, we saw his work on James Marsh's "The Theory of Everything", which
granted him an amazing array of international award nominations. In this film he worked
with Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne.
Audiences will presently see his work in the family film Get Santa, reteaming him with
director Christopher Smith; and on Lone Scherfig’s The Riot Club, based on the acclaimed
play Posh.
He is currently readying the costume design of Juan Antonio Bayona’s eagerly awaited
drama A Monster Calls, also for Focus Features, which will reunite him with The Theory of

WILLIAM BROWN
With a doctorate in Modern Languages at Oxford, William Brown is a British filmmaker,
director of micro-budget films such as Afterimages (2010), Common Ground (2012), China:
A User’s Manual (2012) and Selfie (2014), produced by his production company Beg Steal
Borrow Films. In addition to his producing/directing, which started in 2009, William Brown

wrote and edited 3 books on cinema, and is also a teacher at the universities of Oxford, St
Andrews and Roehampton, London.
