We want to thank you for joining us as we present
more than 100 features, documentaries and shorts from
independent filmmakers around the world as well as a
number of gala premieres. We’re very excited this year
to take our Festival events up several notches including
our Opening Night Film Septembers of Shiraz and
the After Party, presented by Harrah’s Resort Southern
California; VARIETY’s Night of the Stars Tribute on
Thursday night honoring Adrien Brody and Geena Davis;
the Friday Night [Reframed] Party Extravaganza; the
Filmmaker Awards and much more.
Four years ago, my colleagues, Kevin Leap, Tonya
Mantooth, Patti Judd, Vicky Carlson and I had the
opportunity to take over and rebuild this Festival. We
had a vision that the San Diego Film Festival could be
an annual gathering of the most talented and passionate
and accomplished filmmakers from around the globe. We
couldn’t wait to invite them to experience our beautiful
city and share their stories. We believed that San Diegans
would respond and support and participate and help us
achieve this vision. And you have. We are humbled and
grateful. Thank you!
It’s going to be a great five days. So let’s get on with
the show!

One girl. One city. One night. One take.
This award-winning (Silver Berlin Bear) thriller
was filmed in one-take, one-shot. Victoria
meets four local Berliners outside a nightclub
where they promise to show her a good time
and the real side of the city. But these lads
have gotten themselves into hot water: they
owe someone a dangerous favor. As Victoria’s
flirtation with Sonne deepens into something
more, he convinces her to come along for the
ride. When things become lethally dangerous
for Sonne, she insists on coming along. As
the night takes on an ever more menacing
character, what started out as a good time,
quickly spirals out of control.

Our eleven-year-old hero
is setting out to win The
Fiesta Cup, a local bowling
tournament. Joining him is
his famous fashion designer
uncle, Sean (Adrian Grenier)
who hasn’t spent time with
his family – specifically his
father – for years. He has
come home to bid farewell
to his older brother, Eli’s
father. Thrown into the
tournament as his ailing
brother’s substitute he
clashes with his father as old
wounds are opened. Instead
of reliving the past, they

and soulful – SEX, DEATH
AND BOWLING takes us on
a journey to learn that the
secret to life is loving what
you have – even if it is just
a split.
Fatih Akin’s epic drama about
one man’s journey through
the Ottoman Empire after
surviving the 1915 Armenian
genocide. Deported from his
home in Mardin, Nazareth
(Tahar Rahim, A Prophet)
moves onwards as a forced
laborer. When he learns that
his twin daughters may still
be alive, his hope is revived
and he travels to America,
via Cuba, to find them. His
search takes him from the
Mesopotamian deserts and
Havana to the barren and
desolate prairies of North
Dakota. On this odyssey, he
encounters a range of very
different people: angelic and
kind-hearted characters, but
also the devil incarnate.
An inspiring true story
based on the life of
charismatic and brilliant
chess champion, Genesis
Potini. His emotionallycharged story is about finding
the courage to lead, despite
his own struggles – finding
purpose and hope in passing
on his gift to the children of
his community.
Germany 1958. A public

a journalist that a teacher has
been identified as a former
Auschwitz guard, but no one
is prosecuting him. He begins
to examine and lands in a
web of denial, when he and
the journalist find documents
that lead to the perpetrators.
The young prosecutor
devotes himself to his new
task and is resolved to find
out what really happened. He
questions witnesses, combs
through files, is sucked
deeper and deeper into a
labyrinth of lies and guilt
in his search for the truth.
What he ultimately brings to
light will change the country
forever.

Seattle, unaware that her
granddaughter’s drugs are

have no choice but to track
Estelle down, reconnecting
along the way.

Inspired by true events. A
troubled teenager and his
older brother reconnect,
setting off a powder keg
of buried secrets, paranoia
and murder. Jake and Noel
Henson are two estranged
brothers haunted by a
troubled past. Jake seeks
refuge with Noel who lives
with his girlfriend in the old
family farmhouse. Located
on an isolated island, it’s
the perfect place to find
solace and re-connect after
years of separation. Or
so Jake thinks… It’s family
versus morality as Noel’s
psychopathic tendencies
propel them all into a
nightmare.
Roberto runs over a child
and takes him to a public
hospital. No one identifies
the child, who remains in a
serious condition. Roberto
returns to the hospital and
begins to accompany the
child’s treatment, thereby
discovering a totally
different way of life, getting
close to the people there
and developing bonds of
affection. This makes him
rethink his life and leads to
a desire to get closer to his
only son, who has left home
and with whom he does not
have a good relationship.
The film tells two stories in
parallel: Roberto looking
after the child in the
hospital and Roberto
trying to find his own son.
The year is 1866 and
the bloodiest conflict in
American history - the Civil
War - has recently ended.
In the Texas countryside,
two families neighbor one
another. The Rileys trap
animals and sell their pelts
for a meager living, while the
McCluskeys, having lost their
cattle business to the war,
steal from the weaker Rileys’
traps. That is, until Wade,
favorite uncle to the Riley
children and an embattled
war veteran, visits his family
to find reprieve from the
horrors he has seen. Wade
learns of the McCluskeys’
misdoings and takes it upon
himself to put a stop to
them and before long, finds
himself with another war on
his hands - this time, one of
his own making.

Lift Me Up is a touching
and honest story about
a teenage girl who has
just lost her mom and has
found herself living with
her stepfather, who she
does not know or want to
live with. It is a story of selfexpression, the power of
dance, and what it means
to be a family.
A repressed agoraphobic’s
daughter meets a hardened
pastor’s daughter, and
while escaping their homes
to fix a broken camera they
end up en route to attend
an annual church youth
group jamboree. On the
way they encounter a host
of characters that slowly
reveal that their worlds
aren’t what they thought
they were.
When a new doctor moves in

kids make it their mission
to ensure he is not a creepy
guardian of a terrible
neighbor-eating monster.

John is a kindly, well-liked
old man in a small rural town.
John has just killed a man
named Dutch. Dutch had
done a lot of bad things to a
lot of nice people. Nobody
in town would think to
implicate John - nobody but
Danny, Dutch’s violent drunk
of a brother. John’s nephew
Ben arrives from Chicago
on an impromptu trip to
his hometown as his uncle
struggles to evade Danny’s
growing suspicions and
looming threats. One man’s
need for revenge may cost
many more their lives.
Having lost his job on a
coin toss, a man pursues
fortune and enlightenment
in America by harvesting
coins from wishing
fountains. Aided by his
friend and a kindly stranger,
his journey leads to an
indebted traveler who
challenges his notions of
wealth and true happiness.
On a remote American
farm in late 1989, a
brooding but loving
husband interrupts
time with his wife, and
opens the door to a
rain-soaked traveler who
needs to phone for a tow
truck. The next day, the
traveler awakes, hands
and feet bound, in the
barn, taken hostage for
reasons unknown. As his
interrogation continues,
the reality of the trio’s
relationship comes to the
surface.
The founders of Religion, Arizona have a problem.

The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless
weekend in which you and a team make a movie —
write, shoot, edit and score it — in just 48 hours.
On Friday night, you get a character, a prop, a line
of dialogue and a genre, all to include in your movie.
48 hours later, the movie must be complete. Then it
will show at a local theater, usually in the next week.
Since its inception over 390,000 filmmakers
have made nearly 30,000 films in 120 cities on 6
continents around the world. One of these films
is on its way to Filmapalooza for the international
competition.

An education program produced by the San Diego Film Foundation
BRINGING THE POWER OF
STORYTELLING THROUGH FILM
TO SAN DIEGO STUDENTS
FOCUS is a vital year-round education initiative of the San Diego Film
Festival and its nonprofit foundation. Through our countywide program
we work to enhance academic engagement with dynamic film screenings,
collaborative workshops, in-school artist residencies, and teacher training.
In our commitment to young people, FOCUS applies a holistic approach
to learning—emphasizing creativity, critical thinking, and social interaction
in four core programs.
at the festiva l
FOCUS on Career
Dynamic and immersive events during the San Diego Film Festival. Screenings and moderated
panels provide an opportunity for students to interact with today’s premier filmmakers. Last year’s
one day event was attended by 500 students from 15 schools. This year’s program has expanded
to two days for 1,000 students and doubling our program scope and impact for 2015.
The Yea r - ro un d progr am
FOCUS on Creation
Hands-on exploration of the basic tools of filmmaking, led by skilled Teaching Artists. These
residencies explore the theory and practice of filmmaking—from pitching and screenwriting to
production—as students create short films on a selected content area. Last year’s pilot program
produced 16 films while increasing participants’ interest and understanding of film, as well as
improving students’ desire to collaborate and express opinions.
FOCUS on Artistry
Screening series presented at San Diego high schools in partnership with local filmmakers. In this
countywide tour, the Festival will visit classrooms to screen short films that explore complex issues
and ideas, engaging students in dialogue with artists and encouraging social action.
FOCUS on Teaching
Professional development for educators and administrators that integrates digital media literacy.
Each session explores methods of incorporating film and technology into classroom instruction,
being mindful of technical limitations, the needs of diverse students, and each school’s education
standards (Common Core, VAPA, etc.).
