Four years ago, my colleagues, Kevin Leap, Tonya Mantooth, Patti Judd, Vicky Carlson and I had the opportunity to take over and rebuild this Festival. We had a vision that the San Diego Film Festival could be an annual gathering of the most talented and passionate and accomplished filmmakers from around the globe. Festival Co-Host Ben Lyons Ben Lyons is a Television, Radio, and Online host and producer from New York City, who covers pop culture and sports like nobody else. Ben is a regular contributor for ESPN LA radio and the Chief Content Officer for Derek Jeter’s Players’ Tribune. He was a special correspondent on EXTRA!, was the lead host on Yahoo’s LIVE movie premiere and awards show coverage and hosted On The Road for Yahoo. Previously he appeared on the E! Network and E! His portrayal of Harry Houdini in the miniseries HOUDINI is his latest work recognized by the Emmy’s and SAG. Last year he was part of the ensemble cast of THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, which won the 2015 Golden Globe for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy and was a 2015 Academy Award Best Picture nominee. Brody’s previous credits include King Kong, The Darjeeling Limited, Dragon Blade, Summer of Sam, Midnight in Paris, Predators, The Brother’s Bloom and King of the Hill . He currently is starring, opposite Salma Hayek, in Septembers of Shiraz. This prestigious award was created in partnership with Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon and filmmaker Thomas Morgan to recognize an outstanding individual who dedicates their time and efforts to fighting for equality and against intolerance through the use of film. Geena exemplifies this award through her work at the Geena Davis Institute as she leads the charge for gender equality in media. An inspiring true story based on the life of charismatic and brilliant chess champion, Genesis Potini. His emotionallycharged story is about finding the courage to lead, despite his own struggles – finding purpose and hope in passing on his gift to the children of his community. Germany 1958. A public prosecutor discovers through a journalist that a teacher has been identified as a former Auschwitz guard, but no one is prosecuting him. He begins to examine and lands in a web of denial, when he and the journalist find documents that lead to the perpetrators. These residencies explore the theory and practice of filmmaking—from pitching and screenwriting to production—as students create short films on a selected content area. Last year’s pilot program produced 16 films while increasing participants’ interest and understanding of film, as well as improving students’ desire to collaborate and express opinions. FOCUS on Artistry Screening series presented at San Diego high schools in partnership with local filmmakers. In this countywide tour, the Festival will visit classrooms to screen short films that explore complex issues and ideas, engaging students in dialogue with artists and encouraging social action. FOCUS on Teaching Professional development for educators and administrators that integrates digital media literacy.
