Keeping it Reel...
Thank you for supporting the 2009 DC Shorts Film Festival, now celebrating our sixth incredible year.
This year, we are pleased to showcase 100 films and 6 screenplays from 16 different countries. DC Shorts’
amazing growth and success have earned us the reputation as “one of the most influential film festivals”
from Moviemaker Magazine!
Over 820 films and screenplays were submitted to the festival this year. The judging process began all the way back
in May with teams of judges rating each film’s style, content, originality, and technical merits. Recommendations
were then sent on to a team of executive judges, who viewed the 200+ top scoring films to decide the final cut.
The final decisions were difficult and often heavily debated — all so DC Shorts can present the very best films to
you!
DC Shorts has always been proud to feature truly independent films and filmmakers. In this age of digital video
and home computers — and most recently the addition of high-definition technology — the ability to create films
has become accessible to everyone. Our festival proves that great film is no longer just from Hollywood, it’s from
everyone and everywhere.
So butter up that popcorn, get nice and comfy and enjoy the movies! Remember not to rush out of the theater
after the screening — many showcases have a Q & A session with the filmmakers, who are visiting DC from around
the globe.
Jon Gann
Festival Director
From the Film Commissioner
From the City Council
Welcome to the 6th edition of the DC Shorts Film Festival! Thank you for
supporting this amazing event and I hope you enjoy a unique Washington
experience in the D.C. area.
Welcome to Washington D.C. and to one of our city’s most entertaining
events, the DC Shorts Film Festival. DC Shorts has been a finalist for the
Mayor’s Art Award for Innovations of the Arts, in recognition of their
dedication to developing the arts by pursuing excellence in filmmaking
and supporting filmmakers both locally and internationally.
If you are a filmmaker, let me remind you of the opportunity to choose D.C.
for your next project. Here you will find world-class directors, animators
and commercial producers, professional support services, state-of-the-art
facilities and a diverse range of locations to choose from. Moreover, our city
has incentive programs to help you with your project. If you are interested,
you can learn more by visiting film.dc.gov
I know that the DC Shorts Film Festival will turn out to be a memorable
experience for you. It’s a great chance to discover D.C., it’s wonderful
scenery, and the exceptional value of one of the city’s premiere festivals.
Thank you again and have a great time.
Kathy E. Hollinger, Director, Office
of Motion Picture and Television Development
DC Shorts, along with the DC Film Alliance, are working hard to make the
D.C. metropolitan area a vibrant filmmaking area. DC Short’s ability to
bring together people of such varying backgrounds — residents, students,
visitors and filmmakers, makes this a truly exciting event. The uniqueness
of Washington D.C. makes it a most appropriate venue for the festival. I
hope each of you take the time to discover what makes D.C. so special:
its monuments, historic landmarks, restaurants, shops, parks, and, most
importantly, its people.
Please be sure to thank the many volunteers and sponsors who help create
this wonderful festival. Without their dedication and
hard work, DC Shorts would not be possible. Enjoy the
films and welcome to Washington, D.C!

The DC Film Alliance
DC Shorts has always presented an array
of awards. This year, we have expanded our
competitions to offer even more awards with
incredible prizes of cash and products. You help
to determine the Audience Awards by voting
with your phone by texting the keywords which
appear after each catalog listing.
Music is as important to a film as great writing
or beautiful camera work. That is why we are
celebrating the music of film through a special
contest. Visit dcshorts.com during August, listen
to the songs in competition, and choose your
favorite. The winning song will receive a Gibson
Guitar and a wonderful prize package. The song
will also be available at dcshorts.com after the
festival.

In the past, many of our showcases
have sold out. This year, we are
expanding DC Shorts to TWO
venues: Landmark’s E Street Cinema
and the U.S. Navy Memorial’s Burke
Theater. Therefore, we must use two
ticketing systems — one for each
venue. But it is easy, as tickets
for both venues are available
through dcshorts.com. Tickets
can only be used at the location
indicated. Please review your
purchases before you click the final
button to complete your purchase.
During the festival, tickets are
also available at the box offices at
both locations.
The E Street box office offers
tickets for all venues and events.
If you wish to purchase tickets in
person, credit cards and cash will
be accepted for E Street Events;
however, only cash sales are
available for US Navy Memorial
events.
The US Navy Memorial box office
offers tickets for Navy Memorial
events only. Once again, all sales
must be made by cash — no plastic
allowed.
All-Access VIP Passes allows entry
into every screening (all week long),
the Opening Night and VIP parties,
entry to the special seminars and
screenplay competition, and access
to the Filmmaker Lounge. The $125
pass is available at dcshorts.com
As in year’s past, we expect to sell
out most shows — so purchasing
your tickets early or online is
recommended. All ticket and pass
sales are final: there are no refunds
or exchanges.
