UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA FACILITIES OPERATIONS STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE Subject: Contactor Replacement FO-SOP-M05 Rev. 1 Page: 1 of 3 Last Modified: 5/04/2015 Approved by: Duane Siemen 4/14/2015 PROCEDURE: Contactor Replacement Guide INTENDED AUDIENCE: FO Maintenance Personnel PURPOSE: Provide guidance for the selection and replacement of defective contactors with an equivalent Allen Bradley contactor. 1) Motor Contactor Summary When any brand of motor contactor fails, it can be replaced with an Allen Bradley contactor that has the correct Horsepower, operational current and coil voltage rating. This is the preferred avenue to follow when a contactor fails, especially in an emergency situation and when the failed component is obsolete. A new overload module may also need to be installed in conjunction with the contactor and must be selected and adjusted based on the full load amp rating of the motor. Allen Bradley 100 series contactors have been added to stock for the purpose of becoming the preferred contactor replacement part. a) Important items to consider when selecting a replacement contactor: Horsepower of the motor. Rated Operational Current of the contactor. Coil voltage (120V or 24V). Full load amperage of the motor. The correct Overload relay must be installed. If the defective contactor is not DIN rail mounted, a short piece of 35mm wide DIN rail (Allen Bradley #199DR1) will need to be installed for mounting the new contactor. b) How to read an Allen Bradley 100 series part number: Example: 100-C43D10 100-C = The Allen Bradley catalog number 43 = Rated Operational Current (in this case 43 amps) D = coil voltage (D = 120v and KJ = 24v) 10 = Auxiliary contacts, 1 N.O. and 0 N.C. c) Overload Relay selection information: The overload relay module can only be used with the associated contactor as listed in the table below. These are solid state overloads and must be selected so that the full load amperage value on the motor nameplate falls within the value range of the relay. d) Contactor selection chart: Check the motor nameplate for the horsepower and full load amps. Verify the coil voltage of the defective contactor. When the contactor is selected, follow the row to the last two columns on the right to select the correct overload relay. Remember to set the dial to the amperage based on the motor nameplate amps. Compact 1 and 2 pole contactors are available along with full size 2, 3, and 4 pole devices. The first column shows the Allen Bradley part number and the last column is the part number of the contactor that it can be used in place of. Compare the properties of the defective contactor with those in the table to select the correct new contactor. Note: the number in the last column is NOT the only contactor that the Allen Bradley can replace.
