New Year’s Eve Party A party with potluck appetizers, games and tasty desserts is held at the church for families to celebrate the new year. Men’s Breakfast This group of interested and hungry men meets the 2nd Saturday of every month at 8:00 am at a local restaurant. Call the church office for location each month. Summer BBQ For Men Annual activity happening in July. United Methodist Women (UMW) The UMW is a community of women whose purpose is to know God and experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. Circles Three active circles that are open to all women meet monthly, September through June • *Ada/Ruth Circle - first Thursday of the month at 9:30 am • *New Beginnings Circle - the third Monday of the month at 1:00 pm • *Winners’ Circle - the second Thursday of the month at 10:00 am Reaching Out Ministries We believe the Christ calls each of us into Ministry. The church helps God’s people discover their own gifts and how they can be used to glorify God. Many of us discover opportunities for ministry in the needs of our neighbors, co-workers, family and friends. Missions Team We support several programs in our local community as well as in our world com • Valley Outreach - volunteers serve periodically at the local food shelf, assisting clients with shopping and stocking shelves. Other volunteers fill backpacks as part of the food shelf’s effort to provide healthy snacks to needy families over the weekend. •Local Elementary Schools - volunteers provide local schools with reading, spelling and math help. • Stillwater Highway Cleanup - an annual community service project to clean up a designated area of Stillwater • Annual Christmas mission projects in greater Twin Cities area • Young Life of Stillwater - meals are provided for the Junior and Senior High youth attending the Young Life programs Care Team The Care Team is a sub-group of Welcoming who reaches out to members and friends unable to fully participate in the life of the church. Visits, phone calls, transportation and correspondence ensure the ALL are shown the love of God, even if they cannot travel to church. Connect At First United Methodist we believe our relationship with God can be a source of deep and lasting happiness. As we respond to Christ’s call for deeper commitment, we begin to discover the presence and joy of the Spirit every day in our lives. Grief Support Team A group of caring adults created so that no one has to walk the path of grief alone. They listen, send personalized cards and letters, provide grief-related support materials and serve as a resource to call on in times of loneliness. Martha Group We invite you to travel with us in this adventure. Begin by joining us for Sunday worship. Then try one of our growth groups or get involved in one of our ministries to the community, as a way of letting God’s roots go down deeper into your life. All are welcome to participate. A dedicated group of people come together weekily on Tuesday mornings to beautify the church and visually represent God’s message throughout the church buildings. Welcoming Table A dedicated resource expressly designed to welcome new attendees, providing information, a warm smile and a small gift for first time visitors. Prayer For the Christian, prayer is like breathing: Drawing into our lives the life of God, and returning to God our thanks, our praise, our needs and our joys. Prayer is a vital part of our life together as God’s people. Searching the Scriptures The Bible contains God’s living Word for our lives. By reading and studying the Scriptures, we share Christ’s presence in our lives and encounter God. The Lord’s Supper We celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion the first Sunday of each month. As we share together the bread and the cup, we believe God is working in us to fill us with a Christ-like love. The United Methodist Church practices open communion. All people who sincerely desire to grow closer to God are welcome and encouraged to share in this meal. Music Ministry Chancel Choir The choir meets at 7:30 pm on Wednesday evenings, except 2nd Wednesday, to prepare music for Sunday worship. We welcome now voices! Rivertown Ringers The adult bell choir meets Wednesday evenings at 6:15 pm. We welcome newcomers to our group. It is never too late to be a ringer. Open Circle Our contemporary worship group leads worship the second Sunday of each month. Rehearsal is at 7:30 pm the Wednesday evening before the Sunday. Sacred Movement Sacred Movement is an expression of worship through sacred dance. The group performs periodically. Children’s Choir The Children’s Choir performs periodically throughout the year. Junior Ringers Youth Chime and Handbell choir meets Sunday mornings after worship. Call the Church office for rehearsal times. Family Christmas Orchestra The orchestra meets one hour before the first Christmas Eve worship service. Open to all ages and abilities! We play carols for the family and children’s Christmas Eve Service each year. Practice begins one hour before the service. Prayer Shawl Ministry A group of needle workers meets bi-weekly at 10:00 am on Wednesday, to knit or crochet shawls which are given to anyone in need of comfort. Centering Prayer Centering prayer is a form of silent meditation intended to open our hearts to the work of God. We find that praying together helps! All interested people meet in the sanctuary on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:00 pm. Sunday Morning Adult Education The Sonrise Adult Education class meets every Sunday at 8:45 am in the Wesley Room. All interested adults are invited to deepen their spiritual life by discussing some of the basic questions of the Christian faith and practice. United Methodist Connection For those wanting to know more about the United Methodist Church, a short term discussion group is scheduled periodically. Cal the church office for more information. Study Groups Faith and spiritual life grow as we come together to read, discuss and question. A variety of groups and topics are offered throughout the year. Everyone is invited to participate. Contact our office or check the web site for further details. Tuesday Bible Study Tuesday Bible Study meets at the church every Tuesday morning at 9:30 during the school year. Come learn together. A time and space deigned just for youth to get away from day-to-day life and spend time with friends and God. Mission Trip Children and Youth Ministries Nursery Care Infants and toddlers receive professional care during Sunday morning worship. The nursery is located on the lower level of the church. Please ask the ushers for directions. Sunday School Spiritual Growth Retreats Sunday school is offered for three year olds through High school on Sunday morning at 8:45. This is an opportunity for the children and youth to learn about the Bible and about the basic teachings of the Christian faith. Confirmation We offer confirmation for middle school students beginning in the fall of seventh grade. Over the course of three years, youth study the Bible, questions of faith and the church. The group meets each Wednesday night, September through April, from 6:00 to 7:30. Service Opportunities for Youth Serving is a great way to connect with God, our neighbors and our church family. Many opportunities for volunteering are provided throughout the year. Kids Club Kids Club is a children’s activity group that meets periodically on Wednesdays after the meal. High School Coffee Group This is an opportunity for high school students to hang out and talk about life’s questions with the Youth Director. Interested students meet Tuesday morning at Starbucks near the Stillwater High School at 6:45 am. Lock Ins An all night party at the Church where we share fellowship, food, fun and faith with youth in grades 7-12. This is a summer opportunity for church youth, their friends and adults to travel, serve, stretch and grow. We have served in New Jersey, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Chicago and Minneapolis. Junior High Drop-In Opportunities abound for the summer months. Check out the camping brochures that are distributed in the early spring of every year or call the church office for more details. Fellowship Sunday morning fellowship hour Sunday mornings at 11 am there is an opportunity immediately after the Sunday morning worship service for all to share time with each other. Wednesday Fellowship Dinners Wednesdays during the school year at 5:30 pm everyone is invited to share a good home style dinner. The cost is $5 per adult and $2 per child under 12 with a maximum cost of $12 per family. No reservations are required, just come! Fiesta di Pasta The Festa di Pasta is held annually on a Saturday evening in October. It is a community outreach event that promises an evening of fun, fellowship and delicious food. Call the office for details. Progressive Dinner This is a social event for all adults in the Church that occurs in the winter and provides a time to get together and enjoy good food. >>>
