Ash Wednesday Service
The Sounding Board . . .
We will observe Ash Wednesday in the fellowship hall on
February 18 at 6:15 o’clock. This will involve the entire
church family: older children, youth, and adults.
The aim of the service will be to encourage self-examination
and penitence for sin. The guiding scripture will be Psalm
139:23-24:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know
my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and
lead me in the way everlasting.”
I have come to believe that the Protestant reformers - Luther,
Calvin, et al. -, in rejecting certain corruptions and doctrines
of Roman Catholicism, may have triggered an over-reaction
against the seasons of the Christian year (Advent, Lent,
Pentecost, etc.). Now, centuries later, we find ourselves
reclaiming worthy parts of the Christian year. We seek to be
wise, thoughtful, and above all, biblical in what we reclaim.
Do you remember that enigmatic word of Jesus?: “Every
Scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is
like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure
what is new and what is old.” (Matthew 13:52)
It is in that spirit that I am willing to both innovate and
reclaim.

Our children and youth would like to offer a big thanks to
everyone who supported our Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser this
past Sunday. Your generosity resulted in $1545 in donations
for the children’s and youth ministries. We are grateful also
to Publix, WalMart, Sam’s, and West Rome IGA for their
generosity to our efforts.
Many of the youth and children’s parents provided much
blood, sweat & tears in cooking, decorating and clean-up.
Master Chef honors go to Heather McDonald for the
delicious spaghetti sauce.
It’s wonderful when the church body works together!
Special Needs help needed! Many of our special needs
volunteers have become physically unable to assist Stephanie
during the 11 a.m. worship hour. Please consider helping us
in this important area of church ministry.
