In which the President solicits thoughts and opinions from the enlightened membership. In our continuing effort to broaden the base of involvement for all members, the Board recently approved a “Letters to the Editor” section of the Bent Pylon. The idea is to give members the opportunity to comment, propose, critique or otherwise make positive comments for the good of the order. We’re not sure exactly about the specifics of the program, but I like the concept. Forget what Walter Lippman said in The Public Philosophy. We need public opinion from everybody. The people on the Board help to manage the day to day events of the club, but strategy, direction, fine-tuning and innovation can also come from everyone. We need to hear from all of the members about what we need to do, how we need to get there and who is going to do it. So with that in mind, I would encourage everyone to send an e-mail to the BP editor with your ideas. I’m thinking that we should call it “Speaker’s Corner” after the section of Hyde Park in London where anyone can sound forth. Naturally, we need to keep things on a reasonably high level, so the editor reserves the right to edit anything or anyone sounding like they advocate that Judge Hoffmann free the Indianapolis 500. But short of that, send in your ideas. Meantime, I am going back to packing for a week of vacation with the family in Turkey. Gelecek ay goreshuruz. See you next month. We are adding a Speaker’s Corner column to the Bent Pylon. The subject, as noted by President John Meyer, is open. Whatever is on your mind as long as it pertains to the club and/or Porsches. One good example was the Flash Back column from last month which was a response to John’s column. Has anything else that John has said caused you to want to write a response? As you read the board meeting minutes do you think of something you would like to add to the conversation? Send your comments to me. One half of a page is around 450 words in case you are wondering. You can write much less or much more. OVR’s 2013 End of Year Party and New Member Meet & Greet the Board Event Page 11 has coverage of the Tribute to John Dixon event. John has been a presence in the local Porsche scene for many years now. Do you have a memory of him or his Garaj that you would want to share with the club? Someone who will remain nameless told me they were considering purchasing the 1957 Carrera GT Speedster before John Dixon bought it. Do you have a story about the car that got away? Or a car that you bought before someone else could? Write a quick story and send it to me. Don’t worry that you are not an English major or a published author. My proofreaders and I will make sure your story reads well and is grammatically correct. Taking part in the D.E. at Putnam during the club race weekend was a great thrill for me as always. I still have a hard time believing that anyone can take their car out on a racetrack and run as fast as they dare. That is one of the benefits to being in the Porsche club. Be sure to use your club benefits this month by showing your car at Rallye Porsche Mariemont or attending Autumn Thunder. And remember... Valet & Indoor Guarded Parking availible. $20 per couple OVR’s year is not complete without our traditional End of Year Party. It’s the event that rewards service to the club, passion for the brand, and commitment to the cause. Many of our members will be recognized, including our ‘Rookie of the Year’, our ‘Comeback Player of the Year’ and our ‘Most Enthusiastic Club Member’. As always, there will also be a box full of door prizes. The agenda will be fast paced. The convening starts with cocktails and socializing. The story swapping and catching-up with each other will continue over brunch. We’ll then transition into our highly anticipated awards ceremony. Even though there are many outstanding performances to recognize, our awards ceremonies are traditionally short. It is one thing to acknowledge greatness; it’s another thing to bore ourselves with it. Afterwards we will continue socializing while our hard-working OVR Board members oversee the bench races. The newer members can expect to be overtly welcomed. You will find that your fellow Porsche enthusiasts are rarely without an issue to discuss, or an opinion to express. We scheduled this event early in the holiday season. It only makes sense. We Porsche people know that the best is always first. The second annual RPM, or Rallye Porsche Mariemont, OVR’s signature event, will be held on Sunday, October 6. We had a fantastic turnout last year and are expecting hundreds of Porsches to adorn the charming Village of Mariemont this year. RPM Rallye Porsche Mariemont is on FACEBOOK! Be sure and “Like” us and stay abreast of the latest news for the 2013 event. Registration for the 2013 Rallye Porsche Mariemont event is open. Check our website: http://www.ovrrpm.com. If you missed this event last year, be sure and join us on October 6. The German Beer Garden was a big hit and participants from OVR and the surrounding PCA regions enjoyed a beautiful fall day admiring a variety of Porsches and socializing in the Village. Spectators from the community joined in the fun to view special displays and vote for the awards. RPM Road Tour John Patterson- RPM Rallyemaster Rally: noun, an organized automobile run, esp. of sports cars on public roads, designed to test driving skills…per Webster’s New World Dictionary, 2nd. Edition. Again this year, our annual signature event will be launched with a casual rally through picturesque Boone County, KY. We’ll start at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Holiday Inn Cincinnati Airport parking lot, 1217 Airport Exchange Blvd., Erlanger, KY (take I-275 to Exit 2 Mineola Pike). Total rally length is about 65 miles and 2.5 hours (excluding midpoint break), mostly over two lane roads through rural countryside. The route is very hilly with lots of twisties but very few “put your foot down” sections. There are few amenities or gas stations en route but there will be a brief midpoint “health” stop at Big Bone Lick State Park. No treats or prizes as with some rallies, but you will be rewarded with some great views of the most beautiful countryside in the Midwest…all for $10! Register for the Rally at www.ovrpca.org and we will send complete tour details to your e-mail address. Or simply show up at the rally’s origination point with $10 at 2:30 p.m. 7 <RX.QRZ,W·V'RQH5LJKW :KHQ,W·V'RQHZLWK3UHFLVLRQ • body and paint repair of your PORSCHE, “other car” and tow vehicle • frame and unibody repairs by A.S.E. certified technicians • street and track alignment plus performance suspension installation • repairs on all make cars and trucks 35(&,6,21 Frame and Body 9905 Cincinnati Dayton Road, West Chester, Ohio 45069 513·777·4600 Choice of the Schumacher and Rohr Championship Racing Teams 8 Mid-Ohio Driver’s Education Event Dennis Okin - Event Chair Where: Mid-Ohio Racecourse When: October 11, 12, & 13 Autumn Thunder at Mid-Ohio is less than 10 days away!! Try a Driver’s Education Event Dennis Okin-Event Chair Try a Driver’s Education event if you have never been… If you have been then you know how great Mid-Ohio is!!!!!! Our region will host a driver’s education event this coming October 12th and 13th at the highly regarded Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. This fine track is less than 3 hours from the greater Cincinnati area, and less than 1 hour from the greater Columbus area. This Annual Autumn Thunder Drivers Education Course provides drivers with an exciting weekend activity where safety and fun are the most important rules. If you have never driven a road course in your Porsche or other type of vehicle, it is an exhilarating experience. You will drive this course with one of our many talented instructors. First timers: There will be two classroom sessions over the weekend which will help you understand the course, your car and performance driving. The first driving session will be without helmets. Your instructor will drive the first two laps at a moderate speed showing you the corner worker’s locations, the proper driving line around the track and a brief demonstration of your car’s braking capabilities. Then you pull into the pits and you swap places in your car. This is where the real fun begins. You will slowly become more familiar with the track and your car’s performance and handling attributes. During subsequent run sessions on Saturday and Sunday, you will improve your driving and knowledge of the track. At some point on Sunday your instructor will probably allow you to solo on one of the most famous road courses in the United States!! Please remember safety is our number one priority and you will drive to your own safe limits which greatly improve over the weekend. You do not need to do anything to your car for this event. You do not need a helmet as our region has many loaner helmets. All you need are long sleeved shirts, closed toe shoes and we guarantee you will go home with a huge smile on your face. An added bonus is the Friday night pizza party where you will meet your instructor and the other wonderful people who keep coming back to this event. Still not sure? Try our Taste of the Track program which allows you to drive the first run session only and attend a classroom session. After driving the first session, if you want to complete the weekend, just pay the difference of a normal registration. Many of your friends in the Ohio Valley Region have done these driver education events and can tell you more. To register go to Club Registration at the following link: www.clubregistration.net. Past drivers, don’t miss out …register soon…you know you want to be there!!!!!! Time is running out, register soon; there are still some garages also available. Don’t miss this great event. For many of you this will be your last DE of the year …….no better place to do it than Mid-Ohio. If you have any questions about this exciting event please contact me at [email protected] or call me at 513-3005076. 9 Salute To John Pics Photos by Wade Huston and Ted Hunter Events Florals of Mariemont “Where visions become reality, no dream is too vast and every detail is vital.” Gold Medalist · Cincinnati Flower Show 2010 Molly Klinedinst · Award Winner Donna Lennox 513.271.2266 513.404.0206 cell www.eventsbylennox.com 7257 Wooster Pike | Cincinnati | OH | 45227 10 Salute to John Dixon Event Aug. 24 Steve Nelson - OVR Concours Chair Photos by Dave Raum Early in August, I made an informal visit to White-Allen Porsche in Dayton. Tim Brookhart, Sales Manager, waved me into his office where he was meeting with the Regional Sales Manager for Porsche. As I walked in, Tim looked at me and said, “Well, I bet I know why you’re here. You want to do an event, don’t you?” After some initial conversation, we looked at each other, recognizing what it was that we were about to do. In Dayton, many of the OVR PCA events, shows and rallies, often have the Taj Ma Garaj as part of the event if not the host of the event. This time however, it was clear that the event we had in front of us was to center around John Dixon, owner of the Taj and contributor to many things charitable and Porsche related. There was not much time to plan the event, so I had to hustle due to the special nature of it. To that end, I want to immediately say thanks to several OVR friends for offering their assistance in letting me know what I needed to do and in the details of how the event would work. White-Allen Porsche sponsored the event and gets a big thank you from all of us. The time leading up to the event was hectic because this was going to be a once-only event. Not until the morning of the event did we know how many people we would have. Extra security was provided for the Taj inside and outside to coordinate parking for the many folks who did not register and parked non-Porsche sweet rides on the street. Everything fell into place which shows what a great group of folks we have in OVR PCA. I made several new friends who also provided much assistance, especially on the day of the event. Most of our registrants paid at the door, and we had many who did not register because they did not bring a car. We had just under 100 Porsches, including a 910, plus a small group of about 14 non-Porsche cars that included a 1965 Cobra and a 1949 Alfa-Romeo 6C. Our awards were for the Top 15 cars judged by popular vote. Paul and Mary Siegel took top honors for their 1965 356 SC and 1963 356, respectively. Thanks again to all of you who helped and who attended. I spoke with John Dixon a few times leading up to the event, and every time he was very helpful and offered assistance. He said to me that he was blown away that anyone would do this for him and that he was quite humbled by it; “I think this is great, I am humbled.” I let John know that everyone would love to see him at the Salute but that if he does not feel up to it, it’s OK. Present were many friends, great cars, excellent live music, great food, and fantastic weather. Some of John’s friends said a few words about their friendship with John. His daughter thanked us for the years of friendship. It was a great Salute to John Dixon. It is our pleasure in knowing him. Editor’s Note: John Dixon passed away August 31, 2013. Our condolences to his family and friends. OVR will miss him and remember his support for the club over the years. 11 Keeneland Event Photos by Ted Hunter DR. WAYNE E. BAUMAN M. D. The car behind ours with the engine deck lid open is a 1963 356 2000 GS Carrera 2. The owner worked over 10 years restoring the car himself. The roadster to the right of our car is a 1961 356 Super 90 Roadster. Out of 300 possible Concours points in Full Concours Restoration Class and at least 2 separate judging episodes, the Roadster scored 299.1 points. It came in second place to the Carrera 2, with 299.3 points. That is the level of Concours readiness that our car was next to. Why do we do it? Our 356 is nowhere near that level of restoration, nor will it ever be that perfect. But just to present our 356 in such a field is a challenge and an honor. (Ergo, our first place was in Restoration Touring class.) Half of this year’s Parade Concours entrants were in Street Class, where only interior and exterior are judged. Many of the Concours entrants started in this class and went on to the Touring and Full Concours levels. Why do they do it? Because they started with an idea of once a year doing a very thorough cleaning of their special car, their Porsche. Some found that their Porsche retained its beauty year after year with annual concours-type cleaning (cotton swab detailing) and it was easier to do as they became more familiar with the nuts and bolts and crevices, and the accumulating dirt was less and less. My Point? OVR has several local, low-key, concours events. Think about taking the opportunity to prepare and show your Porsche at one of these events. OVR has two events coming up in which to show your Porsche and participate. The first is the VW-Porsche Reunion and the second is the RPM event in Mariemont. Hope to see you there with a nicely detailed Porsche. TWO RECENT CONCOURS were held in our area. The Keeneland Concours was held in Lexington, Kentucky in July. On a beautiful summer day, the event included several car corrals including Porsches, Mustangs and Corvettes. Six OVR Porsches were presented in the formal concours event. They were: • Fred and Linda Haughey’s 1960 356A Cabriolet • Andy and Lesa Manganaro’s 1956 356 Speedster • Kim & Mac McGregor’s 1984 911 Targa • Tom & Michelle Cole’s 1968 912 Coupe • Jayde and Bill Kief’s 2012 Cayman R • Mike and Margaret Valentine’s 2005 Carrera GT Kim and Mac McGregor took 2nd place in Class 9 (Sport Contemporary) and Mike and Margaret Valentine took 2nd in Class 16 (Future Classics). Congratulations. Tom & Michelle Cole’s 1968 912 Coupe In a less formal setting, the HAMILTON-FAIRFIELD ANTIQUE AND CLASSIC CAR PARADE was held in late July also. This event was a low-key judged concours and then a parade through the streets of Hamilton and Fairfield. The event started with rain, but stopped in time for a dry drive. The streets were lined with spectators and lots of waves and smiles. Porsche had its own class, sponsored by OVR. Ted and Kathie Hunter won the class with their 1962 356B Sunroof Coupe. Also entered were James Debord in a 1976 930 Turbo and Linda Savage in a 1974 914 2 liter. 13 Bill Kidwell | | | Realtor ® NAR OAR SOAR (513) 910-8947 cell (513) 924-3390 efax [email protected] www.sibcycline.com 1077 State Route 28, Suite 111, Milford, OH 45150 14 Track Street Powered by Servicing 4009 Borman Drive, Batavia, OH. 513·735·2300 wrightmotorsports.com Conveniently located in the historic district of downtown Milford 208 Mill Street (U. We had a great weekend with a larger number of DE drivers and a few less racers than last year. The weather was absolutely perfect with low 80 temps, low humidity and a slight breeze. The weekend was run right on schedule for which I received a couple of positive compliments. The three race co-chairs want to thank all the volunteers, too many to list, who helped before and during the race weekend. Most of you have been there year after year and we appreciate your help. I think everyone enjoyed the weekend even if they didn’t get track time. There was a significant amount of track time available for the DE drivers as well as the racers. We received an excellent report from the national steward who is in charge of the actual race during the weekend. Thanks to our Premier sponsor Porsche of the Village as well as our Silver level sponsors: Performance Alignment, U.S. Race Gear, Joseph Porsche at Kings Auto Mall, Eurosports Racing and Monroe Collison Center. Without the support of our volunteers and local sponsors we wouldn’t be able to host this event.
