We are continuing our research concerning the structure of
the furniture industry in Italy, since last year our findings
concerning the following areas of industrial concentration
were published in these issues of Datalignum:
• 246 May 2011, “The Province of Treviso”.
• 247 September 2011, “The Province of Pesaro.”
• 248 May 2012, “The Province of Monza-Brianza”.
These studies, in addition to providing a precise idea of the
productive structures, are documented on the maps with
the geographical position of the factories, as well as the
manufacturers’ contact data (company name, address,
telephone number, e-mail, and website). Since the copies
of these issues are no longer available we can provide any
companies interested in reading them with complete issues
in PDF over the internet. In this issue we will look at the productive structure of the Province of Pordenone.

Cenni storici:
Qui di seguito tracciamo la sintesi di secoli di storia, che ha
visto alternarsi anni drammatici di dolore a caus delle invasioni barbariche ed anni di pace e sviluppo sociale sereno.
L’odierna provincia di Pordenone ubicata nell’area Nord-Est
d’Italia vanta una storia che risale ad un millennio prima di
Cristo, ed ha visto succedersi due culture che gli studiosi
considerano fondamentali per la determinazione di quel substrato da cui risulterà poi, nei millenni, l’identità della provincia:
la “paleo-veneta” e la “carnica”. Della prima, avente come
centro la zona di Este-Padova, e la seconda si attesta nella
parte occidentale della Provincia, a Stevenà e Pràdego
(Caneva), Coltura e San Floriano (Polcenigo), Palse (Porcia) e
Montereale; è da connettersi con l’espansione di tribù celtiche dell’Europa centrale nel V-IV secolo A.C., e ne è ben attestata la presenza da ragioni toponomastiche, onomastiche,
letterarie, ma non archeologiche. La romanizzazione, opera
graduale che ebbe inizio tra il III e il II secolo A.C., partì in un
primo tempo dal vicino Veneto (Opitergium, Oderzo: oggi è
provincia di Treviso), già centro di irraggiamento della cultura
paleo-veneta), poi da Aquileia fondata nel 181 A.C. I Romani
costruirono due importanti arterie che interessano ancora
oggi la parte meridionale della provincia e la zona portogruarese: la Postumia (148 a.C., da Genova ad Aquileia) e l'Annia
(131 A.C., circum-lagunare da Adria ad Aquileia), almeno fino
a quando, tra il 42 e il 40 a.C. fu fondata da Ottaviano la città
Julia Concordia (oggi si chiama Concordia Sagittaria).
History:
This is a brief summary of centuries of
history with dramatic years of pain caused by barbarian invasions alternating
with years of peace and serene social
development. The present day Province
of Pordenone is in the north-east of Italy
and boasts a history that dates back to
a thousand years before the birth of
Christ, and has seen the passage of
two civilisations that scholars consider
fundamental for the determination of
the substrate that ended up giving rise,
over the centuries, to the identity of the
province: the “paleo-Venetian” and the
“carnica” civilisations. The first, with the
east Padua area at its centre, and the

Le invasioni barbariche dal II al VI secolo D.C. sono state
dense di eventi anche drammatici e ci limitiamo a segnalare i
nomi dei più importanti uomini e popoli che hanno occupato
quest’area: I Quadi, i Marcomanni e gli Alamanni, dal II al IV
secolo. Nel V secolo di Visigoti di Alarico, degli Unni di Attila,
degli Eruli di Odoacrememdegli Ostrogoti di Teodorico.
Nel VI secolo le invasioni dei quelle dei Bizantini di Narsete e dei
Longobardi di Alboino. La fase “castellana” della storia anche
locale, caratterizzata dal proliferare d' una quarantina di castelli,
corrispondenti a un numero poco minore di feudi patriarcali e
di casate feudali per lo più d’origine germanica, riunite in quel
Parlamento della Patria che è, forse, il più antico d’Europa e
ché potrebbe derivare da una specie di “Consiglio dei pari”
costituito alcuni secoli prima dai duchi di Cividale tra la nobiltà
longobarda del ducato friulano. In questo Parlamento, presieduto dal Patriarca e formato da più di cento membri, il vescovo
di Concordia e l’abate di Sesto occupavano i primi posti tra i
feudatari religiosi, mentre i signori di Prata, Porcia-Brugnera e
Polcenigo i primi posti tra i feudatari laici.

Pràdego (Caneva), Coltura and San Floriano (Polcenigo),
Palse (Porcia) and Montereale; can be connected with the
expansion of the Central European Celtic tribes of the 5th 4th centuries BC; their presence is attested to by place
names, and onomastic and literary but not archaeological
evidence. The Romanisation, a gradual process that started
between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC initially started in the
neighbouring Veneto (Opitergium, Oderzo: the present day
Province of Treviso) already at this time the centre of the
spread of the paleo-Venetian civilisation, and then continued from Aquileia, founded in 181 BC.
The Romans built two important roads that are still present
in the southern part of the province and the Portogruaro
area: the Postumia (148 BC from Genoa to Aquileia) and
the Annia (131 BC passing around the lagoon from Adria to
Aquileia) at least until when, between 42 and 40 BC,
Octavian founded the city of Julia Concordia (today known
as Concordia Sagittaria).

Tra il 1418 e il 1420 la Repubblica di Venezia, già da tempo
incamminata a diventare potenza di terraferma, occupo l’intero Friuli ad eccezione dello staterello pordenonese, la cui
eliminazione avvenne solo nel 1508 nel corso di vicende
europee connesse con la Lega di Cambrai.
Nel 1838 Concordia venne scorporata dalla “Patria del
Friuli” per essere aggregata alla Provincia di Venezia.
Se sul piano culturale l’occupazione veneziana significo il
definitivo inserimento nel Rinascimento italiano, diverso è il
discorso sul piano economico: positivo per Pordenone, che
rinsaldò i suoi rapporti privilegiati con Venezia lungo il sistema idroviario Noncello-Meduna-Livenza e preparò le precondizioni (nei settori metallurgico, tessile, ceramico, cartario etc, etc) del suo futuro sviluppo industriale, passando in
quel secolo da 3000 a 7000 abitanti, piuttosto negativo il
bilancio per il resto della provincia (a parte il settore
ferro/metallo di Maniago che ancora oggi è un’area di concentrazione industriale dove si producono coltelli con i relativi accessori). Il periodo della dominazione austriaca (1815-
The barbarian invasions from the 2nd to 6th century AD were
thick with dramatic events but we will only make reference to
the names of the most important men and civilisations who
occupied this area: the Quadi, the Marcomanni and the
Alamanni, from the 2nd to 4th century. In the 5th century came
Alaric’s Visigoths, Attila's Huns, Odoacer’s Heruli, and
Theodoric’s Ostrogoths. In the 6th century the invasions were
perpetrated by Narses's Byzantines, and Alboin’s Lombards.
Then came the “castellana” period of local history, characterised by the proliferation of about forty castles corresponding to a slightly smaller number of patriarchal fiefdoms and
feudal lines, mostly Germanic in origin, united in a
Parliament of the State (Parlamento della Patria) which was
perhaps the most ancient in Europe and that might have
derived from a kind of “Council of Peers” formed a few centuries earlier by the dukes of Cividale for the Lombard nobility of the Friuli Dukedom. This parliament, presided over by
the patriarch and consisting of more than a hundred members, also included the Bishop of Concordia and the Abbot

Friulana (1846) la diffusione delle idee liberali e unitarie dopo
il 1848-1849, la partecipazione di circa 1300 volontari della
zona alle vicende risorgimentali del 1848-1867, il collegamento ferroviario con Venezia e Trieste (1855-1860), i primi
tentativi di meccanizzazione agricola negli anni Sessanta, il
plebiscito di annessione all’Italia (1866) ecc.

of Sesto who represented the main religious feudatories,
whereas the lords of Prata, Porcia-Brugnera nd Polcenigo
were the main secular representatives. Between 1418 and
1420 the Venetian Republic, already well on its way to
becoming a land power, occupied the whole of Friuli except
for the small Pordenone state, which was only eliminated in
1508 during European matters connected with the League of Cambrai.
In 1838 Concordia was separated from
Friuli and incorporated by the Province
of Venice. Where at a cultural level the
Venetian occupation meant its definitive
inclusion in the Italian Renaissance the
situation was different economically:
positive for Pordenone, which consolidated its privileged relationship with
Venice along the Noncello-MedunaLivenza waterway system and prepared the conditions (in the metalworking,
textiles, ceramics, paper, sectors etc.)
for its future industrial development,
moving in that century from a population of 3,000 to 7,000, though the

at agricultural mechanisation in the
1860s, the general approval of becoming part of Italy (1866) etc. However,
becoming part of Italy marked the start
of a period of agricultural depression
and a large flow of people emigrating
towards Eastern Europe. Today the
Province of Pordenone is part of the
Friulia Venezia Giulia Region and
covers an area of 38.2km2 with a
population of 5,723 and a populace
density of 1,353 inhabitants per km2.

Avendo già pubblicato tre studi sulle aree industriali italiane,
la considerazione generale è che la dinamica di sviluppo del
settore iniziata negli anni ’50 non si è sviluppata equamente
in tutta Italia. Quello che ha fatto e che fa ancora la differenza, è il carattere degli imprenditori, il loro modo di pensare,
di esprimersi, di guardare lontano, di essere curiosi per i
nuovi materiali e le nuove tecnologie, di accettare le innovazioni e, naturalmente “volere fortemente lo sviluppo della
propria azienda”. In quel periodo in tutta Italia operavano
aziende artigianali, che con il boom economico di quegli
anni hanno iniziato ad assumere, nell’arco degli anni, una
dimensione ed una struttura industriale.
A quei tempi erano famosi e ricercati i “Mobili della Brianza”
prodotti a Nord di Milano e al confine sud della provincia di
Como, ma concentrazioni industriali si svilupparono anche
in altre zone. Per il mobile in stile, la provincia di Verona
diventò un riferimento a livello nazionale.
Il mobile Marchigiano della provincia di Pesaro si impose
per la buona qualità nella fascia medio – economica ed oggi
in quell’area sono ubicate due delle più importanti industria
del mobile da cucina. In Veneto e Friuli le industrie del mobile si svilupparono e nacque anche il fenomeno del “fornitore
terzista” di semilavorati e componenti.
La nostra Casa Editrice dalla sua fondazione (a Milano nel
marzo 1982) si è sempre occupata di ricerche di mercato
nel settore con l’obiettivo di fornire agli addetti ai lavori una
precisa situazione del settore “legno-pannelli-mobilicomponentistica” e per questo l’evoluzione delle gestione
dei dati ha avuto dalla cibernetica un impulso notevole.

The structure and dimensions of the furniture
industry in the Province of Pordenone.
Having already published three studies about Italian industrial areas, the general consideration is that the dynamic
development of the sector which began in the 1950s has
not been equally spread throughout Italy as a whole.
What made the difference then, and still makes a difference
is the character of the entrepreneurs, their way of thinking, of
having long-term vision, of being open to new materials and
new technology, of being open to innovation and, naturally,
“strongly desiring the development of their companies”.
In that period there were artisan enterprises operating all over
Italy and in the economic boom of those years they began to
adopt, and developed over subsequent years, an industrial
size and structure. At that time the famous and much soughtafter “Brianza furniture” was produced in the area north of
Milan, and on the southern border of the Province of Como,
while industrial zones also developed in other areas.
The Province of Verona became the national point of reference
for period furniture. “Marchigiano” furniture from the Province of
Pesaro stood out for its good quality in the medium price range,
and today this area is home to two of the most important kitchen
furniture manufacturers. Furniture manufacturers also developed in the regions of Veneto and Friuli, and the phenomenon of
the “subcontractor supplier” of semi-finished products and
components was also established. From its foundation (March
1982 in Milan) our publishing house has always been responsible for market research in the sector with the goal of providing
operators with a precise idea of the situation in the “woodpanels-furniture-components” sector, and the evolution of data
management has received a significant boost from cybernetics.

and contract (M). It is worth noting that many companies produce diverse types of furniture, for example: kitchens and
bathrooms; kitchen-diners and bedrooms; lounges and
chairs, etc. The table below shows the leading production
types in the 100 companies, divided into their codes:

addetti. Per quanto riguarda le tipologie produttive per i mobili,
nel nostro motore di ricerca www.datalignum.com queste
sono 10 e per Pordenone abbiamo aggiunto anche la tipologia del “Contract alberghiero-Allestimenti” poiché in questa
area si sono sviluppate 9 industrie specializzate in questo
lavoro. É interessante constatare che le 100 industrie del
mobile producano insieme 206 tipologie produttive e questo
significa che ogni industria produce almeno 2 tipi di mobili e
non il mono-prodotto. Qualche considerazione di carattere
generale. Il Consorzio Atma Srl comprende 13 industrie ed
esattamente: Acf, Apogeo, Arrex-1, Arbi, Arcom, Ar-Due, ArTre, Atma, Compab, Maronese, Poma, Serenissima e Tempor.
Un altro Gruppo importante è Sintesi specializzata preminentemente in tavoli e sedie e raggruppa le aziende: Sintesi, BBB,

there are 10 types of furniture produced in Pordenone, we
have added “Hotel contracts-Outfitters” because 9 companies specialised in this type of production have developed
in the area. It is interesting to note that taken together the
100 furniture companies produce 206 types of furniture and
this means that each company produces at least 2 types of
furniture rather than just one type.
Some general considerations. The Atma Srl consortium
consists of 13 companies: Acf, Apogeo, Arrex-1, Arbi,
Arcom, Ar-Due, Ar-Tre, Atma, Compab, Maronese, Poma,
Serenissima and Tempor. Another important group is
Sintesi which mainly specialises in tables and chairs and
which groups together the following businesses: Sintesi,
BBB, Cabas, Montina, Bum and DMK.

Un altro ancora è il Petrovich Group che raggruppa le industrie Europeo (la cui fabbrica è a Cessalto in provincia di
Treviso), Bimax e Martex. I 19 produttori di mobili da cucina
sono: Acheo, Arcom, Ar-Due, Arrital, Ar-Tre, Ata, Copat,
Noventa, Dal Zin, Domus, Eurocucina, Florida, Leader,
Maior, Meson’s, Moka, Petrovich Group e Valcucine.
Nelle tipologie della produzione di tinelli/soggiorni e camere/armadi constatiamo come il gusto moderno sia predominante, anche se la produzione di mobili in stile è sempre
apprezzata. Una delle industrie specializzate da sempre in
questi tipi di mobili è la dall’Agnese che qualche anno fa è
stata acquisita dal Gruppo Doimo.
Nel moderno, si distinguono per lo stile del design le industrie Presotto e Zanette. Nei mobili da ufficio i produttori
sono 7: Alea, Atma, Della Valentina Office, Fosam, Martex,
Ritz Office e Uffix. Nel mobile per bagno, negli ultimi anni, si
è avuto uno sviluppo di aziende che si sono specializzate in
questa tipologia, le industrie sono ben 26, compresa la

the Petrovich Group and Valcucine. It can be seen that a
modern taste is predominant in the sector concerning
dinettes/living rooms and bedrooms/wardrobes, even though the production of period furniture is still appreciated.
One of the companies that has always specialised in this
type of furniture is Agnese, acquired a few years ago by the
Doimo Group. The companies Presotto and Zanette stand
out for their design style in the modern sector.
There are 7 producers of office furniture: Alea, Atma, Della
Valentina Office, Fosam, Martex, Ritz Office and Uffix.
Over recent years a number of companies have developed
specialising in the bathrooms sector, there are a good 26
companies including Jacuzzi, which has gained international renown with its production of bathtubs and showers.

FOLDING... FOR ELEGANTLY CRAFTED
FURNITURE MADE IN ITALY!
Per realizzare mobili eleganti, privi di
giunzioni visibili tra top e fianchi, P&P si
è dotata di un’avanzata tecnologia che
realizza in automatico lavorazioni di folding, non con il tradizionale pantografo,
ma con macchinari specifici che raggiungono una precisione centesimale.
Si possono lavorare materiale diversi:
dall’economico nobilitato melamminico a similpelle, dagli acrilici lucidi od
opachi al più pregiato impiallacciato
verniciato. Per ottenere forti spessori,
fino a 80 mm, è possibile utilizzare un
semplice pannello sp 18 mm opportunamente lavorato in folding.
In questo modo si realizzano tavoli e
mobili di design dall’importante impatto visivo. Nei tavoli è possibile montare
all’interno della gamba, che è vuota, la
ferramenta per l’aggancio al piano.
Con il folding si possono eseguire particolari lavorazioni complesse come ad
esempio: top comò e top comodini
curvi, testiere di letto con sezioni trapezoidali, pediere letto curve, giroletti
che sostituiscono il massiccio.
Con il folding si ottengono eleganti strutture per mobili aperti o chiusi da ante
che rispondono a tutte le esigenze del
design valorizzate da stampe digitali.
La lavorazione raggiunge una precisione centesimale degli spigoli nei mobili
in melamminico e in più girata a caldo
nei mobili laccati.
In order to produce elegant furniture
with no visible joints between top and
sides, P&P decided to acquire advanced technological resources enabling
automatic folding operations.
This process is not conducted by
means of a traditional pantograph.
Instead, special machinery is used to
ensure the very highest precision.
P&P can take on various processing
tasks with diverse materials.
Our processes cover a number of
materials, ranging from the less costly
melamine-faced panels to imitation

leather and from gloss or matte acrylics to varnished veneer items.
Simple 18-mm panels subjected to folding can be used to obtain greater
thicknesses of up to 80 mm, for attractive designer tables and other items of
furniture. The hardware for attaching
the table top can be installed inside the
hollow legs. Folding enables certain
highly complex tasks, such as curved
chest-of-drawers and bedside table
tops, trapezoidal-section headboards,
curved footboards, and bed base frames replacing solid wood.
Folding enables production of elegant
structures for items of furniture with or
without doors, to meet all design
needs, with enhancement by means of
digital printed designs. Our procedures ensure precision to a hundredth of
a millimetre for corners in melaminefaced items of furniture, plus heat processing for painted furniture.

DESIGN GOES NATURAL
Nell’allestimento degli interni e nella creazione dei mobili, la
tendenza vede protagoniste caratteristiche quali naturalezza, individualità e forte personalità.
“Design goes natural” è il motto relativo ai decori EGGER
di quest’anno ed è stato anche il tema del nuovo design di
mobili al Salone del Mobile di
Milano 2012.
“Il nostro motto sottolinea lo sviluppo ulteriore verso nuove combinazioni dalle linee filigranate partendo
da una grande concentrazione sui
legni autentici”, spiega Klaus
Monhoff, responsabile del Product
Management Decorativo del gruppo EGGER, “inoltre, l’importanza
delle tinte unite, soprattutto di quelle neutre, è in costante crescita”.
Le tinte unite neutre creano, infatti,
forme cubiche di design e motivi
ricchi di linee originali.
I temi centrali sono inoltre il rovere
termo scuro dai giochi di colore
cangianti, l’elegante rovere nodoso
dal colore naturale, ma anche legni
quasi bianchi dalle sfumature leggere, che si fondono armonicamente nell’arredamento con le tinte
unite dalle tonalità calde del grigio e
che personalizzano la neutralità del
design con il calore e la natura.
La finitura incontra il colore si ritrova nella combinazione di tinte unite
e finiture nettamente marcate.
“I decori privi di superfici oggi non
funzionano più perché sono proprio queste a determinarne il carattere”, afferma Klaus Monhoff.
Superfici interessanti sono attualmente l’Authentic ST10, una finitura opaca e grezza, la Waveline
ST18, la Natural Pore ST11 e la
Painted Wood ST26, in cui l’alternanza di linee dritte e oblique conferisce alla superficie un aspetto
del tutto naturale.

and especially neutral uni colours continues to grow.” Neutral uni colours define designoriented cubic shapes and linear designs. Central topics also include dark thermo oak
decors with a varied interplay of colour, elegant oak decors with natural colours and knots
as well as almost white woodgrain decors with slight colour nuances that create a harmonious design with warm, grey uni colours, individualising the neutrality of the design with
warmth and nature. Texture meets colour is found in the combination of uni colours with
deep, highly defined textures. “Decors no longer work without surfaces today, since the
surfaces define the character of a decor,” Klaus Monhoff says. Interesting surfaces at this
time are Authentic ST10, a matt and rough texture as well as Waveline ST18, Natural Pore
ST11 and Painted Wood ST26, where the interplay of linear and lively sections gives the
surface a natural appearance.

Continuiamo la serie dei nostri studi sull’industria del mobile
per parlare delle migliori 76 industrie del mobile da cucina in
Germania. La Germania è il primo mercato europeo della
produzione del mobile e vanta a monte una altrettanta potente struttura produttiva di pannelli (produce ogni anno 6,5
Milioni di m3 di truciolare, 4 milioni di m3 di MDF e 1,2 milioni
di m3 di pannelli OSB) ed inoltre ha le migliori industrie produttrici di ferramenta, componenti, accessori per mobili, elettrodomestici da incasso che vendono in tutto il mondo.
Inoltre, è qui che sono nate e cresciute, da più di 100 anni,
le migliori industrie di tecnologie e macchinari per la lavorazione del legno, dalla produzione dei pannelli (Dieffenbacher
e Siempelkamp sono l’esempio) e per qualsiasi tipo di lavorazione del legno e pannelli (Homag è la leader incontrastata anche a livello mondiale). Questa situazione non è causale dal momento che dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, la
Germania con la ricostruzione ha costruito e sviluppato una
notevole struttura industriale e commerciale, in tutti i settori

We are continuing our series of research on the furniture
industry to discuss the 76 best kitchen furniture industries
in Germany. Germany is the European market leader in the
manufacture of kitchen furniture and, on top of that, its
panel manufacturing facilities are equally strong (producing
6.5 million m3 of chipboard, 4 million m3 of MDF, and 1.2
million m3 of OSB panels per year).
Moreover, it is home to the top manufacturers in the
hardware, components, furniture accessories, and built-in
appliances, which are sold all over the world.
Moreover, for over 100 years, it is here, where industries
with the best technology and machinery for processing
wood were “born and raised”; from manufacturing panels
(Dieffenbacher and Siempelkamp are examples) to all types
of wood and panel processing (Homag is the undisputed
leader, worldwide). This is not a mere coincidence.
After World War II, Germany was redeveloped and with that
built and developed a remarkable industrial and commercial
structure in all market sectors.
Even older industries exist; founded between 1920 and
1930, some continue to be active today.

tedesche, non hanno neanche risposto alla nostra richiesta.
Nonostante questa carenza delle associazioni tedesche,
che avrebbero dovuto rispondere perché è loro principale
dovere promuovere i prodotti dei loro associati, noi abbiamo ugualmente realizzato questo report poiché le industrie
stesse da noi interpellate - ossia il mercato - hanno risposto
alla nostra richiesta. Inoltre, la nostra casa editrice, come
già accennato, dispone di www.datalignum.com che uno
strumento unico al mondo – che nessuna altra casa editrice
ha – che è la base per ogni ricerca nel settore.

Germany’s strength is also business structure and product
distribution. To understand a market, the first thing is to
know who the industries are, where they are located, what
they produce, where they sell and the sales statistics,
import/export, etc. etc.
For 30 years, our Publishing House has strived to keep the
sector informed on the global market, also through our web

723 names from around the world.
However, understanding and gaining knowledge about the
market is never ending and insatiable.
This is why last month we asked the two German associations of the sector to give us an overview of the furniture
industry’s current situation.
HDH (Hauptverband der Holz und Kunststoffe verarbeitenden Industrie) is the association of the German woodworking and plastic industries and VDM (Verband der
Deutschen Möbelindustrie), which is the association of
German furniture industries, have yet to answer our inquiry.
Despite the lack of response by both German associations,
which in our view they should have responded to considering that their main task is to promote their members’ products, we were still able to write this report because the
industries we contacted - or rather the market – responded
to our inquiry.
Moreover, our publishing house, as we already mentioned,
has the site www.datalignum.com, the only tool of its kind
in the world – that no other

which is the foundation for
all research in the sector.

Inoltre, una leggera tendenza negativa si è registrata nel
comparto dell'arredamento per uffici e dei materassi, con
un meno 1,9 %. L'arredamento per salotti ha registrato
migliori rendimenti con un aumento dell'11%, mentre il settore dei mobili da cucina ha riportato un più 1,6 %. Il fatturato complessivo dell'industria tedesca del mobile nel 2010
ammontava a 15,8 miliardi di euro, generato dal lavoro di
151.000 dipendenti presenti all'interno di 1000 società.”
La Germania nella produzione dei mobili da cucina, essendo
all’avanguardia in tante cose, è stata la prima a comprendere
che un mobile da cucina – più degli altri mobili – deve rispondere a criteri di funzionalità e fruibilità e deve essere corredata
di accessori ed elettrodomestici per l’utilizzo degli elementi
naturali come l’acqua, il fuoco ed il freddo.
Ricordo che nei primi anni ’70 quando ero Dirigente
Marketing Promozione & Sviluppo alla Formica, l’allora industria AEG Telefunken mi invitò a visitare la fabbrica di
Stoccarda dove presentarono dei prototipi di forni a microonde, forni a termo convezione, frigoriferi e congelatori che
per quei tempi erano veramente innovativi e fantascentifici.
Tutti dotati di programmatori elettrodomestici in grado di
accendersi a segnali remoti e spegnersi alle ore volute.
Oggi tutti questi elettrodomestici sono nella vita quotidiana e
non fanno più sensazione.
La ricerca dell’innovazione continua e qui segnaliamo appropriatamente l’industria tedesca Bora Lüftungstechnik: di
Raubling/Rosenheimer (vedi www.boragmbh.com) che da
qualche mese produce un innovativo sistema di aspirazione
per il piano cottura Bora Classic che ha ricevuto l'ambito premio “red dot award product design 2012”.

on the cutting edge of many things, has been the first to
understand that kitchen furniture –more than other furniture
– has to meet functionality and usability requirements and
must be furnished with accessories and appliances that will
be used with natural elements like water, fire and cold.
I remember in the early 70’s when I was a Marketing,
Promotion & Development Manager for Formica, the then
AEG Telefunken invited me to visit the factory in Stuttgart
where they were presenting prototypes of microwave
ovens, convection ovens, refrigerators and freezers, which
in those days were truly innovative and futuristic.
All equipped with timers, these appliances were able turn
on by a remote signal and automatically turn off at a desired
time. Today, all of these appliances are a part of our daily
lives and no longer a big deal.
The search for innovation continues and here we would like
to mention the German industry Bora Lüftungstechnik in
Raubling/Rosenheimer (see www.boragmbh.com).
Several months ago they started manufacturing an innovative extractor fan for their Bora Classic Cooktop which won
the highly sought-after “Red Dot Award Product Design
2012”. Beauty, tactile quality and functionality are the characteristics of the prestigious cooker and the patented Bora
extractor fan that draws in vapours directly from the cooker.
As far as the materials of the structure and the finishing
used by the kitchen furniture industry are concerned, also
here we have experienced an evolution over the years,
resulting in changes in the use of certain materials and in
some cases even replacing them with new ones.
An example is the waterproof kitchen countertops introdu-

evoluzione che negli anni ha visto modificare e cambiare
l’utilizzo di certi materiali ed in certi casi addirittura sostituirli
che i nuovi. Esempio è il piano da cucina (idrofugo) che alla
fine degli anni ’70 la Duropal tedesca impose al mercato e
fece scuola per la solidità, il ben design e la facilità d’applicazione e che oggi è spesso sostituito da piani realizzati in
solid surface (base acrilica), acciaio o altri materiali.
Nella struttura il pannello nobilitato (MFC) ha sostituito totalmente il placcato di 2 fogli di laminato su un pannello truciolare. Nelle ferramenta si sono avuti grandi progressi con il
miglioramento tecnico delle cerniere, con i cestelli da collocare all’interno delle basi dei mobili. Le luci hanno fatto il loro
ingesso, soprattutto i LED, sono oggi parte integrante del
mobile. Le antine che oggi sono preminentemente rivestite
con la foglia polimerica termoplastica (PVC), naturalmente per
cucine di livello medio-ecomomico.

In the structure, melamine faced chipboard (MPC) has
completely replaced the 2 sheets of laminate applied on a
chipboard panel system. There has been major progress in
hardware, with the technical improvement of the hinges,
with the racks placed inside the bases of the furniture, with
the doors that are entirely covered in polymeric thermoplastic sheet (PVC), made, of course, for mid-range kitchens.
Lighting, today mostly LED, is by now an integrated part of
the furniture. We must say that over the last decades the
way people live has changed all over Europe.
This is due to an increase in the cost of housing and consequently living spaces have been “re-dimensioned”.
Now there are more “singles” and therefore an increased
demand for one-room and two-room flats, where the living
area becomes one with the kitchen.
This has led kitchen furniture industries to create new
projects tailored to meet the changed needs, where the kitchen is a liveable area.

C’è da dire che nell’ arco degli ultimi decenni è mutato anche
in modo di vivere della popolazione in tutti gli Stati d’Europa,
a causa dell’aumento dei prezzi delle abitazioni e di conseguenza si sono “ridimensionati” gli spazi abitativi.
C’è stato un aumento dei “single” e quindi della richiesta di
mono-locali e bi-locali e dove spesso la zona living è diventata
un solo spazio con la cucina.
Questo ha comportato per le industrie del mobile da cucina
la realizzazione di nuovi progetti adeguati alle modificate
esigenze, dove la cucina diventa un soggiorno vivibile.
Qui di seguito citiamo alcune delle industrie tedesche più
conosciute e le caratteristiche dei loro prodotti.
Alno:

All these colours are joining the 38 colours of the “Basic
Collection”, launched to the market at the last Interzum’11
fair (Köln-Germany). The innovative technology that
Lamigraf applies in the manufacturing of this product, offers
near unlimited possibilities in the creation of printed colours
on decorative paper for surface covering of chipboard or
mdf in LP qualities, as well as high pressure laminates. The
particularity of the printing process gives great colour
homogeneity, savings in the impregnation process and a
better result for high gloss applications. Lamigraf’s knowhow, together with our experience as a unicolour supplier
allows us to offer flexibility in quantities and delivery time as
well as a wide range of hues. Lamigraf is planning to carry
out new launchings of colour ranges following the tendencies of the decoration and manufacturing furniture markets.

SURFACE TECHNOLOGIES HAS RETURNED
TO FORMER GROWTH RATES
Dopo la notevole riduzione del fatturato negli anni difficili del
2009 e 2011 per il settore delle macchine per la lavorazione
del legno l’industria tedesca Wemhöner Surface Technologies
è tornata a tassi di crescita precedenti l’anno 2011.
Il fatturato nel 2010 era sceso a 43 milioni di € mentre il
2011 è stato di 56 milioni di % con un incremento del 51%.
Wemhöner è un produttore di macchine qualificato, che
vende impianti per la produzione dei pannelli in tutto il
mondo, e quest’anno ha iniziato con un portafoglio ordini di
55 milioni di € ed il target di incremento dovrebbe arrivare a
74 milioni, per garantire l’occupazione fino alla fine di questo anno. Il numero dei dipendenti è di 240 ed in Herford
attualmente l’azienda investe in nuove tecnologie.
Wemhöner è anche in grado di offrire ai propri clienti qualsiasi impianto per la nobilitazione melaminica, linee di verniciatura, così come per la stampa diretta e digitale con pro-

After considerable reduction in turnover in the very difficult
years of 2009 and 2010 for the machine building industry,
Wemhöner Surface Technologies has returned to former
growth rates in the year 2011.
While the turnover in 2010 had decreased to 43 Mio €, a
turnover of approx. 65 Mio. € (plus 51% in 2011) .
The plant manufacturer, specialist in machinery and installations for the surfacing of wood panels worldwide in this segment of the market, started into the new with an order volume of 55 Mio € and has currently and order volume of 74
Mio. € which secures the employment up to the year 2012.
The number of employees could be kept constant on the
level of 240 employees.
In Herford, the time has been intensively used to invest into
new technologies. Priority was given to the “digital printer
working” in single-pass procedure.

The Holzma Domino System is one example of this flexibility
– it is based on the principle of a saw that grows with you.
Customers can rely on an innovative modular technology

The new PowerCom Plus control allows an even easier
operation of the machine. The surface finishing tools can be
sharpened by permanently mounted straight jointers in the

corso degli anni, grazie ad una chiara visione dei mercati
futuri e ad ingenti investimenti. Quello che ha sempre
distinto l’industria Fantoni, diventata negli ultimi anni un
Gruppo internazionale, è la ricerca di mercato per capire le
motivazioni di acquisto degli utenti e proporre nuovi prodotti che soddisfino le esigenze per nuove applicazioni e
nuovi mercati. La “lungimiranza”, tipica di Fantoni, ha indicato il percorso e le strategie da seguire per gli investimenti negli impianti necessari alla produzione di nuovi pannelli.
Per comprendere questa chiara visione del futuro è necessario citare date e riferimenti precisi che fanno ormai parte
della storia mondiale dell’industria dei pannelli.
Fantoni, alla fine degli anni Settanta ha avviato la realizzazione del progetto MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard).
Nel 1979, esattamente il 15 Dicembre, ad Osoppo/Udine è
entrata poi in funzione in Europa la seconda linea, in ordine
cronologico, per la produzione di MDF. Per comprendere
l’importanza dell’iniziativa industriale è necessario anche
sapere che il primo impianto di MDF in Germania è entrato
in funzione nel 1984. Oggi l’industria Fantoni ha una capacità produttiva annua di MDF di 1,2 milioni di m3 e 400.00
m3 di pannelli truciolari, gran parte dei quali vengono nobilitati. Il Gruppo Fantoni comprende le seguenti industrie:

Historically, Fantoni has been operational for more than a
century. Starting out as an artisan firm, Fantoni developed
over the years into an industrial concern – thanks both to
its clear vision of the markets of the future and to the considerable investments it has made.Fantoni – which has
become an international industrial Group in recent years –
boasts a quality which it has never abandoned. We engage
in market research, in order to understand why customers
make purchases, and therefore in order to come up with
new products for new applications and markets. Fantoni’s
typically “long-term” approach has served as a guide, indicating the courses and strategies to be taken up, in terms
of investment in the equipment required for the production
of new panels. Our clear vision of the future emerges in the
light of certain specific dates and developments which
have since become an integral part of the history of the
panels industry, worldwide.Toward the end of the 1970’s,
Fantoni embarked on its MDF (Medium Density
Fiberboard) project. In 1979 (15 December), at
Osoppo/Udine, the second MDF production line in Europe,
chronologically speaking, was set up. To understand the
significance of this industrial move, we may note that the
first MDF plant in Germany opened in 1984. Fantoni’s
yearly MDF manufacturing capacity has now reached 1.2
million m3, plus 400,00 m3 of chipboards (a considerable
quantity are veneered). The Fantoni Group includes the following industrial concerns: La-Con, Lesonit, Novolegno,
Patt, Spik Iverica and Xilopack. The Group has a workforce
of 1,200. Of our vast range of products, targeting various
sectors (furniture, construction, industry), our most significant panels are chipboard, standard MDF, and low(lightweight) and high-density MDF, fire-retardant and
water-resistant panels, zero formaldehyde panels, extrathin products (min. 1.5 mm), panels for parquet, melaminefaced panels for shims, for décor work and for various finishings, panels to be coated with PVC sheeting, door-sized

to meet all needs, including special applications. For an
update on the situation for the Group at present, we paid a
visit to Osoppo and interviewed the foreign sales manager,
Dr. Andrea Cleani. “For the future,” Cleani informs us,
“we’ve opted for a highly specific, long-term strategy.

Guardiamo sempre di più con interesse all’area mediterranea, che per
noi rappresenta uno sbocco naturale e si può dire che sia una “estensione del mercato italiano”, questo
perché dal punto di vista logistico e
geografico l’Italia è ben collegata
con i paesi mediterranei. La seconda considerazione è di carattere
economico-sociale. I paesi dell’area
mediterranea, compresi quelli del
Nord Africa, hanno una crescita
demografica interessante e sostanzialmente una struttura economica
ricca (materie prime, di petrolio e
gas, etc.). La terza considerazione è
che sono paesi che hanno poco
legno (quando ce n’è). Partendo da
queste tre considerazioni abbiamo
cominciato ad operare su questi
mercati. Ci siamo proposti come
partner fornitori di pannelli e la crescita di questi mercati è
andata di pari passo con la crescita del nostro export.
Abbiamo scelto questa strategia perché i paesi dell’ area
mediterranea sono in via di sviluppo e la crescita continuerà
anche in futuro. Ci sarà sviluppo anche nell’area sub-sahariana, nei paesi come il Camerun e Ghana. I paesi dell’ Est –
Russia (comprese le repubbliche collegate) e Medio Oriente,
sono mercati promettenti, ma i costi di gestione logistica
sono molto alti. Dopo 15 anni possiamo dire di essere soddisfatti delle scelte fatte, scelte che ci hanno premiato.”
We are looking toward the Mediterranean area with growing interest.
Both logistically and geographically,
Italy has close ties with Mediterranean countries, so this area is,
for us, a logical target and, we
might say, an “extension of the
Italian market”. Secondly, we must
consider the economic and social
factors. The countries of the
Mediterranean area, including
North African countries, display
significant demographic growth,
and wealth in terms of economic
structure (raw materials, oil and gas
etc.). Thirdly, these countries have
little (if any) wood.
We entered these markets bearing
these three aspects in mind.
We presented ourselves as a possible panel-supplier partner, and the
growth curve of these markets has proceeded hand in hand
with growth in our export business. We selected this strategy because the countries of this area are developing and
because growth will continue. Development will also occur
in the Sub-Saharan area, in such countries as Cameroon
and Ghana. Although the Eastern European countries, and
Russia (including the associated republics), and the Middle
East are promising marketplaces, the logistics costs are
very high. After 15 years, we can only say we are pleased
with the decisions we made, and have reaped the rewards.”

ADVENTURES OF 13
HARDWOOD CHAIRS
L’American Hardwood Export Council
(AHEC) sta collaborando con gli studenti di design del prodotto industriale
del Royal College of Art di Londra alla
produzione di 13 sedie che saranno
esposte in settembre al London Design
Festival. Sotto la guida dei tutor Sebastian Wrong e Harry Richardson gli
studenti hanno accettato la sfida di
progettare una sedia o una seduta funzionale utilizzando un’essenza a loro
scelta fra le venti specie di legno di
latifoglie americane disponibili in commercio. I progetti saranno trasformati
in prototipi con l'aiuto di Benchmark,
azienda riconosciuta a livello internazionale per le sue competenze nella
lavorazione del legno e per la lunga
collaborazione con il noto designer
Terence Conran. L’AHEC è ben nota
alla comunità internazionale del design per il suo impegno nella promozione creativa dell'uso del legno di latifoglie americane. Dopo aver collaborato
con grandi nomi come David Adjaye,
Matteo Thun, Sou Fujimoto, Arup e
Amanda Levete, l'associazione si rivolge ora alle potenziali celebrità di
domani con un progetto inedito dedicato agli studenti. Si tratta di un’iniziativa unica sotto il profilo didattico e

Council will collaborate with product
design students at the Royal College of
Art in London to produce and exhibit
chairs during the London Design
Festival. Under the leadership of tutors
Sebastian Wrong and Harry
Richardson, the students have been set
the challenge to design a functional
chair or seat in an American
hardwood of their choice. The designs
will be developed in to working prototypes with the help of Benchmark, internationally renowned for its craftsmanship in wood and long-standing rela-
tionship with designer Terence
Conran. The American Hardwood
Export Council (AHEC) is well known
in the international design community
for its creative promotion of hardwood,
having worked with the likes of David
Adjaye, Matteo Thun, Sou Fujimoto,
Arup and Amanda Levete. But now its
attention has turned to the potential
stars of the future with a unique and
groundbreaking project for students.
Education and research provides a
unique element to the project because
AHEC is using, for the first time, its
ground-breaking Life Cycle Assessment
(LCA) research to help the students produce detailed Life Cycle impacts for
their designs. Each chosen prototype
will be environmentally profiled using
an LCA modelling system developed for
AHEC by sustainability experts, PE
International. AHEC is in the process
of producing the first-ever Environmental Product Declaration for
American hardwood lumber and
veneer; it is this data that will be used
by the students to build a full “cradleto-grave” impact for their designs.
According to Sebastian Wrong, the
project “offers a pioneering opportunity
for students to create designs within the
context of a stark reality.” His co-tutor
Harry Richardson added, “it is not
only a case of designing a chair that
will survive physically far in to the
future, it is also to produce a chair
whose design will remain relevant far
in to the future.” David Venables,
AHEC’s European Director who developed the idea for the project with
Sebastian Wrong, says: “We are so
excited to be working with students
from the RCA. We can’t wait to see new
talent emerge and have an opportunity
to show them what a great design
material hardwood is. The fact they
can also see and understand the full
environmental impact of their design
gives this collaboration extra relevance
to today’s world and sets it apart from
other student design projects.”
