Saint Mary's will confer four honorary degrees at today's Convocation. Frank Baldwin Doctor of Civil Law, honoris causa To anyone who knows the sport in Nova Scotia, "Mr. Basketball", as he is affectionately known, has enjoyed a distinguished career as a coach and administrator. He founded the Saint Mary's Basketball Huskies and set them on the path of excellence. He is still to be seen around the basketball court at The Tower of the University, offering the benefit of his unmatched experience to both coaches and young players. Assuming his first coaching role in 1939, with the Oxford Junior High School team, in 1950 he coached the Queen Elizabeth High School team to the Canadian Juvenile Championship. Mr. Baldwin first came to Saint Mary's in 1952 as the manager of the University's bookstore and canteen. At the same time he started coaching the men's basketball team and remained with it until 1962, when he became recreational director for the Canadian Martyrs Church, Halifax. Throughout the 70s he continued to coach at both the provincial and national levels. His service to the game has brought him many honors, including induction into the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame in 1979. He was co-founder of the Halifax Juvenile Boys Basketball league. From 1972 until his retirement fourteen years later he was basketball coordinator at Sport Nova Scotia. The success of Frank Baldwin's career has been based not only on his love of basketball, but on his love for people. "People have always been my priority", he said in an interview a few years ago. At the same time, when asked to recall the highlight of his career, he replied in typical fashion "Every day was a highlight". Naomi Hersom Doctor of Civil Law, honoris causa Dr. Naomi Hersom is completing her term of office as President of Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax. She received a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education and Masters of Education from the University of Manitoba and a Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Alberta. Her distinguished teaching and administrative career began in the elementary schools of Winnipeg and led her to teach in the Faculty of Education, at the Universities of Alberta and British Columbia. In 1981, she became Dean of the College of Education, University of Saskatchewan, where her work included the expansion of technical and vocational teacher education programs, and the development of distance education. Dr. Hersom has made substantial contributions to the cause of education, serving as president of both the Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education and the Canadian Society for the Study of Education; as a vice-president of the Canadian Education Association; and a member of the Advisory Academic Panel of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). For her work in education and other areas of public service, notably the Inter-varsity Christian Fellowship of Canada, she has received numerous awards, including YWCA Woman of the Year. In 1987 she was invested Grand Dame of Merit, Order of the Knights of Malta. She has been tireless in her teaching, writing and administrative efforts to promote many causes, not the least of those concerning the role and wellbeing of women. She has been a member of the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women and the UNESCO Status of Women Sub Commission. She holds honorary degrees from Manitoba, McGill and York Universities, as well as the University of Ottawa. She has published 58 papers on a wide range of subjects, and, in addition, has given her time to research and delivered a staggering 153 talks and addresses to bodies as widely ranging as a pregnancy crisis centre and SSHRC. Dr. Gerhard Herzberg, C.C. Doctor of Science, honoris causa Born in Hamburg, Germany, Dr. Herzberg received his undergraduate and doctoral degrees from the Darmstadt Institute of Technology. In 1935 he escaped from Nazi Germany to Canada and became Research Professor Physics at the University of Saskatchewan. From 1945 to 1948 he was Professor of Spectroscopy at the University of Chicago, prior to joining the National Research Council (NRC) as Principal Research Officer, Division of Physics. He remained with the NRC to serve as Director of the divisions of physics and pure physics, and in 1969 was appointed Distinguished Research Scientist, Division of Physics. He is now Distinguished Research Scientist with the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics, named in his honor. Other honors which have been showered on this distinguished scientist include the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1971) and the Linus Pauling Medal from the American Chemical Society (1971). In 1987 the minor planet 3316=1984 CN1 was officially named "Herzberg". Dr. Herzberg's scientific work has been in the fields of spectroscopy, atomic and molecular structure and astrophysics. It has been said that "his work has added to our knowledge of the atmospheres of the stars and planets and has enlarged our understanding of the bonds between atoms and molecules." He is an honorary fellow or member of learned societies around the world and has given many memorable lectures. In addition, Dr. Herzberg has published over 275 papers in scientific journals in his fields and six books on spectroscopy. He holds honorary degrees from 36 universities, including doctorates of science from Oxford, Cambridge and the University of Chicago. David F. Sobey Doctor of Commerce, honoris causa Grandson of the founder of Sobeys Inc. David Sobey began his working life sorting vegetables in the basement of a company store in Stellarton. Today he is chairman and president of the company, which employs 10,000 people; operates more than 115 retail stores from Ontario to Newfoundland; and has major wholesaling, food services and manufacturing operations. After studying at Dalhousie University, Mr. Sobey joined the family firm and, except for one year with First National Stores in Boston, has been with it ever since. After a period managing one of the Sobeys stores in Halifax, he became Director of Merchandising and Advertising; Vice-President (1961); and in 1974, President. Under his leadership and guidance, Sobeys Inc. has grown from $150 million to over $1.8 billion in annual sales. In 1990, he was made a Knight of the Golden Pencil, an honour which recognizes personal commitment and a significant long-term contribution to the Canadian food industry. Mr. Sobey's community service includes work with Junior Achievement of Canada; a directorship with the Retail Council of Canada; and the Food Marketing Institute. He serves on a number of boards of directors, including Dominion Textile, Provigo, Hannaford Bros., CHC Helicopter Corporation, and Evangeline Savings and Mortgage Company, as well as Empire Company and other associated businesses. He was appointed to the Board of Governors of Saint Mary's University in 1986 from whence he continues to serve the institution. * * * The academic distinction of Emeritus will be conferred on two individuals. Dean Emeritus: Dr. Douglas Williamson Dr. Douglas Williamson is being honored by Saint Mary's with an appointment as Dean of Science Emeritus. Dr. Williamson was Dean of Science at Saint Mary's from 1980 to 1989. During this time, he was active in university affairs and on academic boards, but still found time to teach a course in geology. In a tribute published on his retirement, Dr. Jaroslav Dostal wrote: "Dr. Williamson's term as Dean of Science was an unqualified success. His dynamic personality, unfailing integrity and constant striving for the highest academic standards will be remember for many years. His legacy in the Faculty of Science is a vastly increased level of research activity and outside financial support." Dr. Williamson came to Canada in 1953, after four years as a Royal Air Force pilot and six years at the University of Aberdeen, where he earned a Bachelor of Science and a Doctorate in Geology. Upon his arrival, he joined the Geology Department at Mount Allison. In 1966, he moved to Laurentian University in Sudbury, where he undertook to set up its new geology department. Three years later he was named Associate Dean of Science and became Dean of Science in 1975. Professor Emeritus: Dr. Richard Beis After 25 years of teaching philosophy at Saint Mary's, Dr. Richard Beis has retired. The University will honor him at Convocation with the title Professor Emeritus. Dr. Beis and his wife came to Canada in 1965 from Chicago. They came in search of land, clean air and work. Nova Scotia provided all three, and they have been here ever since. Prior to the move, Dr. Beis taught at Northern Illinois University and Maryknoll Seminary; also at St. Norbert College in Wisconsin. Dr. Beis' career has been devoted to the study of ethics, although, as he says, "I teach ethics, I do not preach ethics." His work is deeply rooted in the great Greek philosophers Plato, Aristotle and Socrates, as well as Saint Augustine, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Descartes and Hume. He has researched and published widely in the area of sexual ethics, touching on many of the great moral issues of the 20th century. Dr. Beis holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario, and a Master of Arts and Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame. * * * William Stewart, S.J. Award for Excellence in Teaching This was established by the Alumni Association in 1983 and the Selection Committee of that organization chooses the winner from nominations received from the faculty, students, and administration. There is a medal, which is presented at Convocation, and a cheque for $1,000. Previous winners of this prestigious award are as follows: 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 t Professor David Hope (Accounting) Professor Dermot Mulrooney (Engineering) Dr. David Perrier (Sociology) Dr. John Young (Chemistry) Professor E. McBride (Political Science) Dr. Jack Ginsburg (Chemistry) Dr. Peter March (Philosophy) Dr. Andrew Seaman (English) This year's winner is Dr. Philip Street of the Department of Psychology. Dr. Street received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Windsor. He then moved to York University in Toronto, where he studied for his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy. He has been teaching at Saint Mary's since 1973. Dr. Street's students recommended him for this prestigious Teaching Medal. In the citation one student said, "His encouragement sent me on to graduate school and I am grateful to be numbered among his students," while another comments, "To have been a student in...classes has been an honour and a significant element in my growing experience as a student in psychology." Dr. Street still regards teaching as a challenge, especially the larger classes which are now common at Saint Mary's. This year he introduced a system which he hopes will help to "find a way to get back the intimacy that is found in the small classroom." One of his supporters says, "He always shows devotion to his students, whether it be by advising, teaching or encouraging." This devotion goes beyond the classroom. Dr. Street was involved in setting up the peer counselling program on campus, which tries to make the first year's experience an easier and richer one for students. "I know Father Stewart and I am an admirer of his. I have always enjoyed the encounters we have had, although they have been brief and infrequent." Dr. Street adds, "It is an honour to follow in his tradition." The Hooding Ceremony As you will observe, all the graduates and members of the academic procession are attired in the basic elements of formal academic dress, which at Saint Mary's follows the general guidelines established Oxford and Cambridge Universities in England. Formal attire consists of academic robe, hood and mortar board, although at Saint Mary's the latter is limited to Masters' graduates only. The academic dress worn by each participant depends upon the academic level attained. There is a special attire for the Bachelor level candidates, for the Masters, and the Doctorate. While tradition has dictated the style or cut of the academic attire, each university, for the most part, will amend certain details of the attire to suit its own particular tastes and traditions. The academic hood which each graduate is wearing symbolizes the degree into which the student will be or has been admitted. The hood itself traces its tradition back to the Middle Ages, when its prototype, with a cowl-like appendage and tail, was used to cover the shoulders in the cold and draughty medieval buildings or in inclement weather. Gradually this garment was modified and the hood assumed an academic rather than functional significance. The hood has two basic elements: the trim on the outer edge and an inner satin lining. Each hood has its outer edge trimmed with a colour to indicate a particular faculty and degree; white symbolizes Arts; gold symbolizes Science; grey Commerce; and white with pale blue symbolizes Education. The hood for the Masters candidates is essentially the same as the Bachelor hood, efxcept that the trim is usually an inch or two wider. All the Bachelor level hoods are lined with satin in the colours of the university granting the degree. Hence at Saint Mary's the hood is lined with maroon satin with a white chevron. The Masters hood at Saint Mary's is lined with maroon satin only to give it added distinction from the Bachelor's. Distinctions on Degrees and Diplomas At Saint Mary's University in the general undergraduate degree and diploma programme, academic distinctions are awarded to successful candidates on the basis of the following quality point averages calculated on the highest grades attained in twelve courses taken at Saint Mary's, including the last ten in the student's programme in the case of the pass degree and, in the case of honours, seventeen courses (or equivalent) including the last fifteen courses in a student's degree programme. History of Saint Mary's University Saint Mary's University was founded in 1802 to provide opportunities for higher learning to young Catholic men. Its founder, the Reverend Edmund Burke, had meagre resources to work with but, on later being named Bishop with responsibility for Nova Scotia, he continued to support the college as essential to the development of the Catholic community. In 1841, the Nova Scotia House of Assembly gave formal recognition of its academic role. Its legal status was confirmed in perpetuity by enactment in 1852. In 1913, the Christian Brothers of Ireland, a teaching order, were invited by the Archdiocese of Halifax to direct the college and its academic program. During the ensuing years, Saint Mary's University became more widely known for the quality of its undergraduate teaching and continued to develop new instructional programs most notably within its Faculty of Commerce. In 1940, the Upper Canada Province of The Society of Jesus was invited to succeed the Christian Brothers as administrators and teachers in the University, and for thirty years until the enactment in 1970 of the new act of incorporation, the college remained under Jesuit supervision. The long-standing emphasis on liberal arts and commerce was extended to include new programs in science, engineering, and teacher education. Extension courses became an important part of the University's commitment to an active educational role in the community. The Ceremonial Mace The ceremonial mace, which is carried by the Marshal of Convocation at the head of the academic procession, was presented to Saint Mary's in April, 1980 and used for the first time at the 1980 Convocation. It symbolizes the University's authority to grant degrees. It was made and presented to the University by Maritime Command in recognition of Saint Mary's alumni killed in both world wars and also serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces who have been students at the University. The mace is made of oak with a cast brass crown and brass plates carrying traditional ceremonial engravings. The plates represent the contribution to Saint Mary's by the Jesuit Fathers, the Christian Brothers of Ireland, the Archdiocese of Halifax, the LaSalle Christian Brothers, the Lay Teachers, and the Armed Forces. Flags on the Stage Each year Saint Mary's has a number of non-Canadians in its student body. The flags which you see displayed on the stage for Convocation are from some of the countries from which these students come, not necessarily graduating students, but those in any year of study. This international aspect of the Saint Mary's University community is a feature of justifiable pride which contributes markedly to the growth and understanding of both Canadian and non-Canadian students. Also included in the University's permanent collection of flags is one from the International Year of the Disabled signifying the University's commitment to disabled people.
