This is Commencement Weekend. What an exciting time for our families. Today we had our last meeting with
the Class of 2105 in our Auditorium. They have spent four years of class meetings in there. After rehearsing
for Sunday’s ceremony, our Seniors were led out of the building by a drum line. Students and staff lined the
hallways cheering and congratulating our graduates. This is a very emotional procession as each of us
experience happiness and sadness at the same time. These same emotions will be felt on Sunday at
Commencement. On behalf of all the staff of Groves High School, I want to congratulate the families of our
graduating Seniors. Thank you for entrusting the education of your student in us. It has been our privilege to
work with you and your child during their years at Groves. I look forward to celebrating on Sunday at
Commencement and at All Night Senior Party with you.
Commencement is at Ultimate Soccer Arena, 867 South Blvd, Pontiac. Students should arrive no later than
3:30 pm. They are expected to line up in the balcony area by 3:45 pm. The procession starts promptly at 3:59
pm. The ceremony is approximately 1 ½ hours. The facility is handicap accessible. Guests with mobility
challenges can be dropped off at the front circle. There is plenty of available seating. Parents and guests are
not allowed into the graduate area once the ceremony begins to allow visual access to all. We are looking
forward to a wonderful celebration.

This is a night your student doesn’t want to miss! The $55 registration fee can be sent with your student to the
party Sunday night. Make checks payable to ‘Groves PTSA Senior All Night Party’ and put registration and
your student’s name in the memo. You don’t need the form.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Thank you for volunteering to help with Food For Thought! The end of the trimester is fast
approaching and we need to prepare to serve bagels, juice and water during exams (June 10th &
11th). The bagels, juice and water will be served after the first testing period each day. We will
shop on Friday, June 5th The following jobs are available for each of the 3 days. Please let us
know how you would like to help:
DRIVERS: 1 driver is needed each day (Wednesday and Thursday) to pick the bagels up at New
York Bagel (12 Mile and Evergreen), then bring them to school. Bagels need to be picked up at
7:45 am. A VAN, SUV OR VERY LARGE TRUNK is required because it is A LOT of bagels!
SHOPPERS: One shopper is needed to meet Susie and I on Friday June 5th around 10 am at
COSTCO (Square Lake and Telegraph). We will load the juice and water, and deliver it to
Groves. This requires a strong back and VAN OR SUV. Please call Kimberly(248-761-1519) or
Susie(248-259-6101) when you arrive at Costco.
SERVERS: 8 servers are needed each day (Wednesday and Thursday) to cut and serve bagels.
Each server should bring a small cutting board and knife (not a bagel slicer). The bagels are cut
into halves (in a C shape), to reduce waste. Servers need to arrive at the school cafeteria at 8:00
am, and we will finish at approx. 9:30

Dress code
Now that the warm weather has arrived, we are experiencing daily dress code violations. Please review our
dress code in the handbook. Shorts, skirts and dresses must be fingertip length. Tank tops must have straps
that are 3 fingers wide. We do not allow spaghetti strap tanks. No bare midriffs and no low cut, overly
revealing tops. There is a difference between school appropriate clothing and weekend and casual wear.
Please assist and review these guidelines with your student. I do not want to see a student miss class time to
change into school appropriate clothing, but that is the consequence for dress code violations.
Convenient Sports Physicals Onsite at Groves HS!
Meadowbrook Urgent Care will be hosting a sports physical clinic in the Groves HS gymnasium on
Wednesday, June 3rd from 3:00 – 5:30 pm. The physicals cost $25 which can be paid via cash or check (to
Meadowbrook Urgent Care) on arrival. There is no preregistration as the event is first come-first serve. These
physicals satisfy the requirement for any athlete interested in playing school sports during the entire 2015-16
school year.

Summer Food Program
We would like to provide families with information regarding the Summer Food Service Program as we enter
the summer months. The SFSP is a Child Nutrition Program that feeds children during school summer
vacations. Families that qualify for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program used during the school year are

Groves Boys Tennis Meeting
Have a boy interested in playing Tennis for Groves in the Fall?
Please join us for a short meeting to meet the coach and captains and obtain try-out information for the tennis
team (try-outs are in August!).

Environmental Science Fall Trip
Attention all future AP and regular environmental science students. There is an informational meeting for the
Environmental Science field trip taking place in September 2015. These meetings will have more information
and answer questions about the trip. You may come to Seaholm on Tuesday, May 19th from 3:00pm – 3:30 pm
in the Little Theater and at Groves Wednesday May 20th, 3:00-3:30pm in the Little Theater. Sign up is already

French Students Take Honors
Each year the AATF (American Association of Teachers of French) hosts Le Grand Concours, a National
contest for students of French. This contest provides the students with the opportunity to be recognized for
their language accomplishments by demonstrating their competence in listening and reading comprehension
as well as grammatical skills. Over 90,900 students participated in Le Grand Concours 2015 and we are
pleased to share that includes Grove’s French 1 students!! Thanks to a grant from the PTA, French 1 students
were enrolled and participated in the test and were able to shine!
Congratulations are in order to our Platinum winner Samy Meradi who earned the highest award possible in
the Concours. Samy earned the top score in the nation in his level/division and earned a plaque, platinum
medal and certificate. Bronze medals and certificates were earned by Sean Bonner, Randall Fraley and Paige
White and Honorable Mention certificates were earned by Eric Green, Emily Mazius and Simone White.

John Lawson Named MSCI Debate coach of the Year
On Saturday, May 16 the Michigan Speech Coaches, Inc selected John Lawson to receive the MSCI Debate
Coach of the Year-2015. This is at least the 2nd time that JL has received this award. The committee cited his
successful season, his endurance in the debate community, his incredible work with Detroit Urban Debate
League and his lasting impact on speech activities in the State of Michigan. I know you know how much JL
does for the Groves debate and forensic students. I am happy to share this achievement with you.

Science Exploration Day at the University of Michigan-Dearborn will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 9 am
– 1 pm. Students will learn about research opportunities in the biological sciences, chemistry, physics, and
environmental science; they will visit research labs and explore the Environmental Interpretative Center.

Summer Science & Engineering Experience Camps – Oakland University and Oakland Schools are
partnering to offer hands-on engineering experiences for 8th-12th graders. STEM topics include Alternative
Energy, Bio-Engineering, Engineering Design, Programming & Controls, Computer Engineering and Robot
Building. Four 2-week sessions will be held in June and July at OSTC locations. For more info and to

Transitions College Prep Workshop will be hosted by The University of Michigan-Dearborn on Saturday,
June 27, 10 am – 12:30 pm. Students and their parents are invited to learn about navigating the college

MAKE THE WORLD YOUR HOME
Youth for Understanding is looking for some welcoming families to host exchange students for the 2015-2016
school year. Here are some of the boys and girls coming to our community soon. Families provide a place to
live and meals, plus encouragement, guidance, love and limits. The students pay for their other expenses and
become a true family member sharing in the real life fun and responsibilities of the family. Call Barb Kilkka at

host from all ethnic and educational backgrounds, different family configurations, with and without children at

Emotion Revolution
We are excited to announce the Emotion Revolution, a joint initiative between the Yale Center for Emotional
Intelligence and Born This Way Foundation. Our goal is to drive the national conversation that encourages
schools to integrate social and emotional learning (SEL) and build more positive school climates. But before
we begin, we need to listen. That’s why, we’ve just launched an anonymous online survey that asks high
school students from around the country to take 7 minutes to tell us how they currently feel in school, how they
want to feel, and what they believe needs to happen to bridge the gap between the two. The survey was
approved by Yale University’s Human Subjects Committee and does not require parental consent. If you would
like to see the survey, there is a link to the PDF on the bottom of the website (see below).In October 2015 we
will host a summit that will feature youth participants, Lady Gaga and Yale President, Peter Salovey. The
summit will serve as a platform to unveil the findings and offer youth the opportunity to share their ideas for
creating improved learning environments with educators, academics, and policy makers.
How You Can Help
We want and need to hear from as many young people around the country as possible. The more data we
collect, the stronger the research will be and the more effective the SEL tools that we have to offer youth will
be. Please share the survey with students and encourage them to participate. Here is everything you need to
