Timely Information
Avoid the Summer Slide with Summer Reading
The summer reading lists are up on the Groves’ Homepage!
Some of the ninth/tenth grade lists allow for student choice and you may be asking how to help your
child choose a book? I recommend letting your child read a book s/he wants to read even if it is not a
classic. You might have your child ask for recommendations from friends, family members, teachers,
librarians, and websites like goodreads.com. Tap into the people who know the books that engage
kids. Also, consider reading a complex book or an article together. It’s not just for elementary
school! The more complex the text gets, the more s/he needs a reading partner/model.
Any questions? Email [email protected].

Have a wonderful summer!
Senior All Night Party Wrap-Up
The 2015 Senior All-night party was a HUGE success on Sunday night. The committee put together
a fun evening that was packed with student-friendly activities, great food and just the right amount of
pizzazz. Thank you to the many volunteers and the Groves Staff for making it such a great event.
Groves Students gave back in a couple ways as well. All students were asked to donate new toiletry
products for care packages that were sent to Beaumont Hospital. During the all-night party, young
people came to our Community Service room and filled zip lock bags with toothbrushes, toothpaste,
shampoo, deodorant, hand sanitizer, tissues and more, each bag included a hand-written note of
encouragement from a student.
Students also signed thank you notes to our wonderful party donors as way of expressing their
appreciation to the local community for their generosity.
Lastly, early Monday morning Mr. Van Ermen, continuing a 4-year tradition, picked up all the leftover
food and delivered it to South Oakland Shelter for their rotating shelter week happening in Royal Oak.
Groves Students truly care about their community, asking and wondering about these items above.
Congratulations to the Class of 2015 as they are now on their way to the future having contributed to
the present in some small but meaningful ways.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Thank you for volunteering to help with Food For Thought! The end of the trimester is fast
approaching and we need to prepare to serve bagels, juice and water during exams (June 10th &
11th). The bagels, juice and water will be served after the first testing period each day. We will shop
on Friday, June 5th The following jobs are available for each of the 3 days. Please let us know how
you would like to help:
DRIVERS: 1 driver is needed each day (Wednesday and Thursday) to pick the bagels up at New
York Bagel (12 Mile and Evergreen), then bring them to school. Bagels need to be picked up at 7:45
am. A VAN, SUV OR VERY LARGE TRUNK is required because it is A LOT of bagels!
SHOPPERS: One shopper is needed to meet Susie and me on Friday June 5th around 10 am at
COSTCO (Square Lake and Telegraph). We will load the juice and water, and deliver it to Groves.
This requires a strong back and VAN OR SUV. Please call Kimberly(248-761-1519) or Susie(248-2596101) when you arrive at Costco.
SERVERS: 8 servers are needed each day (Wednesday and Thursday) to cut and serve bagels. Each server
should bring a small cutting board and knife (not a bagel slicer). The bagels are cut into halves (in a C shape),
to reduce waste. Servers need to arrive at the school cafeteria at 8:00 am, and we will finish at approx. 9:30
Please let us know how you would like to help by contacting Susie Demarco or Kimberly Meslin.

Groves School Garden
We’re looking for families to care for our school garden for a one week period through the summer.
All needed materials are in a storage box next to the garden. Weed control and watering are what
you will do in the early weeks of summer. Later in summer harvesting and donating are part of the
plan. (Some families chose weeks when their church is hosting a “Feed the Homeless” dinner so they
can donate from the garden.) Everything we grow is donated to food banks, shelters and churches. If
interested, please e-mail Bonnie Bartnick at [email protected] or call 248-227-6702.
Instructions will be emailed to you. Also, there is information in the storage bench.

MAKE THE WORLD YOUR HOME
Youth for Understanding is looking for some welcoming families to host exchange students for the
2015-2016 school year. Here are some of the boys and girls coming to our community soon.
Families provide a place to live and meals, plus encouragement, guidance, love and limits. The
students pay for their other expenses and become a true family member sharing in the real life fun
and responsibilities of the family. Call Barb Kilkka at 248-932-0811 or [email protected] for more
details on these boys and girls (and others). All kinds of families host from all ethnic and educational
backgrounds, different family configurations, with and without children at home. Elementary and
middle school host siblings are among the greatest beneficiaries of the program. Here are just some
of the kids headed to Oakland County homes. Maybe yours? Please click on the link.

Call Barb Kilkka at 248-932-0811 or [email protected] for information about hosting and for detailed
profiles and letters of these boys and girls or to receive the list of other students available.
Parent Feedback Requested
As the result of the many changes in our economy, staffing and budgets over the past few years, the
Operations Department is continuing our annual survey of the Custodial, Transportation, Food
Service and Maintenance & Grounds departments. Each survey takes about 5 minutes to fill out
and the continued success of these departments depends on your continued support and input.
Below you will find a link to the surveys, I know this is an extremely busy time of the year for
everyone but your input is valued. Each year we have made improvements over the previous years,
which can be directly attributed to these annual survey results and comments!
