HARWOOD’S BEST BUDDY
Maureen Charron-Shea is a cornerstone of the Harwood Union faculty. Her accomplishments as a
Speech-Language Pathologist and a proponent for equitable access to education are deep and wide.
Maureen is a graduate of the University of Vermont. First earning a Bachelor of Science in
Communication Disorders and then a Master’s of Science with a concentration in Communication
Disorders.
Her career in education began in the Burlington School system. She also worked several years part
time in the Montpelier School District before becoming a member of the Rehabilitation Team at CHVS.
Then, in 1988, Maureen accepted the position of Speech Language Pathologist at Harwood Union; and
she has been making her mark ever since. Her 27-year journey at Harwood is characterized by
contributions that have transformed a school building into a community of learners with the capacity
to uphold the Harwood Union mission; that is an environment in which every person is valued as an
individual..
Maureen, an ardent advocate for students with disabilities, and has been instrumental in building
authentic relationships among diverse student groups that reflect awareness, acceptance and
advocacy. In addition to providing 1:1 services and being a strong colleague and co-teacher, Maureen
has successfully launched Nationally recognized service-learning projects that not only fulfills the
promise of inclusion, but supports opportunities for the development of friendships and leadership.

Vermont Principal’s Association
Best Buddies, in its second year at Harwood, is one example of Maureen’s effort to build community.
Best Buddies is a club that pairs students with and without disabilities in 1:1 friendships, and as one
student put it, "Best Buddies makes me feel happy, and like I could make a serious change in the
world."
Maureen believes there is no “normal”. She states, “In truth, we are all unique in this life together. I
further believe communication is fundamental to understanding others and ourselves. It is my
privilege to work with students in developing their communication skills.”
Maureen is retiring this year. The next step in her journey is to partner with her husband in his real
estate business serving as a financial manager. In addition, she will spend her time kayaking, doing
yoga and reading for pleasure.

Science in the Field
On Tuesday May 5th Students in Jeff Robins’, Kristi McKnight’s, and John
Kerrigan’s honors biology classes took a trip to UVM’s cancer research
center. While there, students were able to visit the pathology lab,
where they viewed and handled tissues with and without tumors.
Students were also able use some of the equipment such as a scanning
electron microscope. Before leaving students had the opportunity to
complete a mini lab investigation on identifying genes associated with
cancer.
Harwood Calcutta
As Shakespeare Said: … “I can no other answer make, but thanks,
and thanks and ever thanks” (Twelfth Night)
Our 2nd annual Harwood Calcutta night was an amazing success!
Thanks to all of you who bought tickets, donated gifts for the
drawings, or passed our requests on.
The response was so awesome; we could have sold a dozen more
tickets!
Harwood teacher Tami Munford won $1,000, congrats Tami! Boys
Hockey Coach Dave Morse won $500, and the grand winner, Bill
Anderson, won $2,000.
There are not enough “thank you” s in the world to adequately thank
Brian McCarthy. His tireless work to promote the night was the single
biggest reason for our success.
Thanks again for all your work and help to provide a bit of budget
relief for our athletic programs!
