Harwood Weekly Update
Brace yourself for a week of Harwood Spirit – a long
tradition of students proving the worthiness of their
Harwood spirit. In a week of competitions, each class
tries to outdo the other in the arts, athletics, and
academics. Classes earn points in a wide variety of
challenges including poetry, the battle of the bands,
Survivor, thematic skits and murals along with a day of
events that include everything from Twister to Chess,
Ultimate Frisbee and Jousting. The winning class gets
bragging rights for a year and recognition on the plaque.

Harwood Student Earns Prestigious National Recognition
Charlotte Caffry Randall
A Presidential Scholar
Charlotte & Governor Shumlin
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the selection of
Charlotte Caffry Randall, a Harwood student, as a 2015 U.S.
Presidential Scholar. Ms. Caffry Randall is one of 141 American high
school seniors that have demonstrated outstanding academic
achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, service, and
contribution to school and community. Charlotte will be honored for
her accomplishments in Washington D.C., in June.
“Presidential Scholars demonstrate the accomplishments that can be made
when students challenge themselves, set the highest standards, and commit
themselves to excellence,” Duncan said. “These scholars are poised to make
their mark on our nation in every field imaginable. Their academic and artistic
achievements reflect a sense of purpose that we should seek to instill in all
students to prepare them for college, careers, civic responsibilities, and the
challenges of today’s job market.”
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, appointed by President
Obama, selects honored scholars annually based on their academic success,
artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as
evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to
high ideals. Of the three million students expected to graduate from high school
this year, more than 4,300 candidates qualified for the 2015 awards
determined by outstanding performance on the College Board SAT and ACT
exams, and through nominations made by Chief State School Officers or the
National YoungArts Foundation’s nationwide YoungArts™ competition.

Harwood teacher, Katherine Cadwell, who spoke to me on
behalf of Charlotte, states, “Words that come to mind when I
think of Charlotte include grace, intention, insight, intellect.
She has a strong moral compass, making her generous with
her time, and conscientious in her actions.”
In addition to being a top scholar, Charlotte’s contributions
to school and community have included: serving as an
intern in a seventh grade math class; being a student
representative on a hiring committee for a math teacher;
Co-founder and President of Harwood’s Best Buddies Club,
a powerful peer-to-peer mentoring program that links
traditionally- and differently-abled students for activities and
relationship; and serving as a longstanding member of
Partner’s Club, another peer program where students
support students competing in Special Olympics.
Charlotte values a liberal arts education, but is excited
about expanding her knowledge of neuroscience and
learning theory, in addition to studying teaching practice.
Prom Info:
Tickets for the 2015 prom, Masquerade in Paris, will go on
sale during lunches the week of May 4. Tickets are
$25/single and $45/couple. The prom is to be held at
National Life on Saturday, May 16, from 7:00pm until
11:00pm.

by coach buses making it necessary to have the final
number of participants attending no later than Friday, May
22. This year's event will begin at HUHS at 7:15pm on
Saturday, June 13, for bag checks and boarding; continue to
Twin City Lanes for bowling, arcade, two-story laser tag, and
munchies; travel to Burlington to board the Spirit of Ethan
Allen for a 1:30am - 3:30am cruise with music and ice cream
sundae bar; and ending with drop-offs at the Waterbury
Train Station (4:45am) and HUHS (5:00am). All contracts
must be signed by the student and a parent/guardian even if
the student is 18 years of age or older. Students MAY NOT
drive themselves to and from the event, but can carpool with
another parent or guardian. Please direct any questions to

ONLINE COURSES
VTVLC is the program through which Harwood students can
access a limited number of accredited online high school courses
for free. The courses run concurrently with school terms, and
therefore represent commitment over and above regularly
scheduled courses. Slots are limited, and will be available next
year only to members of the classes of 2016 and 2017 on a first
come, first serve basis. If interested, you should contact your
school counselor as soon as possible to complete the preapproval process.
IT’S COMING…THE SENIOR Post-Secondary
Questionnaire…
On May 11th each member of the senior class will receive an
electronic survey sent to their wwsu email. Keep an eye on your
account. Every Senior must complete it! It is about YOU, and
your current plans for next year. It should take no more than two
minutes to complete. This form is important for TWO big
reasons:
1)
It generates critical data about the class of 2015 that is
published annually in Harwood’s profile and gives data about
trends among high school graduates. This information is also
required by the Agency of Education.
2)
Many of you are going on to college, military or other
program and will need your final transcript sent at the end of the
school year. This survey is the way you communicate to the
school counseling office where you would like that final
transcript sent.
