Newsletter Series 2 No 12 Your Endeavours continue to be recognised. The Long Room at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London in late January saw you efforts in 2014 gain further recognition when Nutrition and Hydration Week collected the Health and Vitality Public Sector Award, the week was also runner up the Communications Award (not bad for two caterers and nurse). The week was recognised because of the work you all did in raising the profile of food and drink in health and social care (LTC) settings in March 2014. A big thankyou to you all for your support and continued support of the week and the passion to bring good nutritional care, including hydration to those you care for and the wider stakeholders. It was great to see the week nominated among a list of national and multi national companies. It places the collective we are, providers and suppliers – large and small – health and social / LTC – caterer/foodservice and clinical+, amongst the big multi nationals, demonstrating the tremendous effort and work you put in not just to the week but everyday is now being recognised. Plans are continuing to come in via emails, Twitter, & Facebook. Here are some of the latest. The University Hospitals of Leicester have decided to focus each day on a different theme of relating to Nutrition and Hydration within the hospital. Their timetable of the week is: Monday – Highlighting the importance of the MUST screening tool for malnutrition. Tuesday – Focus on the importance of hydration including guidance on ensuring each patient receives hydration as part of their experience and safety. Wednesday – Worldwide afternoon cream tea (to be sponsored by Nutricia) on our care of the elderly/dementia wards. Thursday – Focusing on how to accurately weigh patients and complete food record charts as part of our nutrition care. Friday – A particular focus on the importance of Complan shakes in hydration which are currently being introduced across the NHS trust. Keep up to date on @NHWeek nutrition and hydration week Newsletter They are also producing/resourcing leaflets and posters to promote each theme and these will be available on all wards. They will promote the week through the staff internet, patient website, trust newsletter, and social media including twitter. In addition they are producing a video which will summarise their key messages from Nutrition and Hydration week with a particularly focus on the worldwide afternoon tea. This video will be used as part of the ‘everybody counts’ campaign which the trust is currently running with the video will be open for staff and the public to view. The Army and Royal Air Force are on board The defence caterer ISS is running a hydration promotion during the week to promote water and hydration in general to the Army and Royal Air Force. During the week a free bottle of mineral water will be served with every meal and this is backed up by a poster campaign to remind the officers and ranks of the importance of good hydration along with their daily rations. In Esher, Surrey Princess Alice Hospice in Esher, Surrey, a local charity dedicated to providing free, high-quality compassionate care and support for patients, their families and carers are planning many events during the week pharmacy stand, a Healthy Lunchbox competition & wellness event for staff Jersey General Hospital, Jersey Channel Islands They are engaging in the Nutrition and Hydration Week and are participating in the afternoon tea event with tea and cupcakes on five of their inpatient areas. In addition they are currently planning other daily activities throughout the week to promote nutrition and hydration. Avon View, Christchurch in Dorset Their plans for the week are Monday morning – a trip out to the local Supermarket, looking at the fresh foods. In the afternoon they are holding a flavoured water tasting session. Tuesday morning – Canapés and cocktails in the hairdressers. Lunch time, St Patricks day lunch celebrating St Patricks day with Baileys, Guinness, Irish Soda bread. Wednesday afternoon – Tea’s from around the world and cream tea. Thursday morning – Fruit Smoothies with Mariza, followed in the afternoon by a food quiz. Fruity Friday ends off the week with fruit tasting and a quiz.
