Program Coordinator, Plaques and Markers
Heritage Toronto is a charitable arms-length agency of the City of Toronto established in 1949 to promote a
greater appreciation for the city’s rich architectural, cultural, archaeological and natural heritage. Through
partnerships with local community groups and volunteers, Heritage Toronto provides city-wide programs and
services.

Summary: This position is responsible for the long-term, strategic growth of Heritage Toronto's Plaques and
Markers Program, and oversees the management of program projects through all stages. The Program
Coordinator is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders to develop
initiatives and projects that reflect the strategic goals of the organization. This position has one direct report.
Responsibilities:












Delivers all aspects of time-sensitive plaque projects including but not limited to:
o Identifying and securing program applications and funding sources.
o Researching or overseeing research of plaque subjects using archival, academic, and
community resources.
o Writing and editing interpretive engaging and accurate plaque texts, in conjunction with
key stakeholders and experts, as well as the Plaques and Markers Program Committee.
o Coordinating plaque design, including multimedia components and, where necessary,
translation services.
o Coordinating manufacture, delivery, and timely installation of plaques, including site
permissions for installation and hydro locates.
o Coordinating plaque maintenance.
Recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers and reporting staff.
Coordinates external service providers, program purchasing and requests for quotations.
Coordinates program budget, revenue, and expenses with the Administrator.
Facilitates public participation in program by establishing and maintaining relationships to
communities, City divisions, and other program partners.
Develops strategic initiatives to broaden program reach, including program of applications
reflecting the city's diverse heritage, its century homes, and its Heritage Conservation Districts.
Develops complementary programming opportunities with the appropriate program staff, including
tours, members’ only events, and digital content.
Provides information and recommendations to Heritage Toronto’s Plaques and Markers Program
Committee, elected officials, City staff, developers, community partners, and the public.
Completes Board and Committee reports, program updates, and policy revisions.
Develops and delivers with the Director of Marketing a program-specific marketing strategy to
ensure the program’s long-term growth.
Plans and delivers community-based and high-profile program events with Marketing staff,
including the coordination of press releases, event invitations, and speaking notes.
Contribute, where requested, to other Heritage Toronto programming.
Qualifications:
 M.A. in History or a related discipline and at least 1 year programming experience; or a relevant
undergraduate degree and at least 3 years of programming experience
 Excellent research skills, with great attention to detail.
 Highly developed writing skills and the ability to condense historical information into succinct texts.
 Exceptional interpersonal and outreach skills
 Excellent project management skills.
 Strong leadership skills and ability to work on own initiative in fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
 Proficiency in utilizing a variety of software packages, including Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to work in
Adobe Illustrator would be considered an asset.
 Knowledge of the Ontario Heritage Act and best practices for built heritage conservation would be
considered an asset.
