We have had another exciting month! In total, 597 tokens were handed out this month. The “good
news” stories that go with each token are what keep me coming to work each and every day. When
our students come down to the office, they tell about the co-operation, initiative, caring, or dedication
to their learning goals. With each recount comes new learning. It is wonderful to be a part of the
learning journey. This month we recognized one class from JK – Grade 3 and another class from
Grade 4 – 8. Congratulations to Miss Tessier and Mrs. Samra’s class and to Mrs. Veenvliet’s class!
Keep up the great work to all of our students.
Thank you to all of the students, and their supportive parents who get them to school on time each
morning. Starting the day with the same routine and being at school each and every day is an
important way to build learning skills. This, of course, also sets our young learners up for success in
the future to become independent. So, please know that all of the efforts you are making each
morning to assist your children to get to school on
time and planning vacations during school holidays
goes a long way to instill life-long learning.
Yours in Education,
Nancy Jones

CLASS PLACEMENTS FOR 2015-2016
We are planning for the next year’s student placements. We are anticipating that we may have some splitgrade classrooms for next year, as our present student numbers will make this unavoidable. When we are
deciding which children will be placed into split grade classes, we try to avoid students being placed in a split
for consecutive years, if possible.
If you would like to have input into your child’s placement for the next year, please send a note to Mrs. Jones
before May 15th. Only requests that are made for “sound educational reasons” will be considered. Please
note that any input received after May 15th will not be considered, as we are attempting to make all class
placement decisions before the end of this school year, in order to allow us to get off to a smooth start in
September. School staff work very hard when creating class lists. Consideration is given to learning styles,
working partnerships and balancing the learning needs of all students in the grade.
Waiting until after school starts to ask for changes is very disruptive to all concerned and therefore all
requests at that time will be denied unless a reorganization of classes take place.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Do you (or someone you know) have a child who was born in 2011? If so, it’s time to
register them for Kindergarten in the SCDSB! Simcoe County’s public schools will be
registering children for Kindergarten for the 2015-16 school year. Required registration
documents include birthdate documentation, proof of address and record of
immunization. For more information, visit www.scdsb.on.ca/kindergarten.

SCHOOL FUN FAIR
We are falling significantly short on parent volunteers to help us out on the day of
the event.
The Fun Fair will be on
Wednesday, June 17 from 5-7:30p.m.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
If we do not get more volunteers we will have to cancel the event! Please respond
ASAP to me if you are able to volunteer for the night. We are only asking for one
hour of your time. You could volunteer from 5-6, 6-7, or 7-8 p.m. You can email
me ([email protected]) or you can let the office know at the school and they
will send me your name and info. We will be deciding by May 22 if the Fun Fair
will need to be cancelled.
Thanks for your support,

GIFTED SCREENING
Some students who display an unusually advanced degree of general intellectual ability may require
additional program support in order to reach their educational potential.
In consultation with parents, the school uses the board’s Gifted Screening Process to determine who these
students are. Typically, gifted learners comprise approximately 1% of the population.
If you would like to request gifted screening for your child, please contact Ms. Barry at the school by June 12,
2015. Typically, this is done in the Grade 3 year for students who display significant gifted characteristics,
including advanced cognitive ability, intellectual curiosity, sensitivity and creativity, capacity for intense
motivation and advanced affective capacity.
The gifted screening process consists of three components:
1. Teacher Rating Scale; 2. Parent Questionnaire; 3. Otis Lennon School Ability Test
For some students it may be necessary to include subtests from the WISC-IV.
After signing a permission form, parents/legal guardians will complete the Parent Questionnaire. Information
obtained from this questionnaire will help the school gain a better understanding of your child ’s early development as well as his/her strengths, interests, needs and abilities, which the standardized test may not identify.
The teacher will complete a Rating Scale, which examines areas such as learning, motivation, creativity and
leadership, as observed in the classroom. Group testing will be completed in November and the results
will provide a standardized measure of school ability. The information gathered from all three components will
assist the school in programming for your child.
