Fun-Run Debrief by President Liz Groenewegen
Arrive at 7:00am for breakfast and
7:30am start.
It was acknowledged that this was a most successful event with good community
& sponsor feedback-active participation from all those involved and $20K
turnover. Club members were all congratulated on their participation & hard
work in making this event so noteworthy.

Club members were asked to give suggestions on areas that needed “tweaking” and there were a few as
summarised below.
The suggestions are valuable to help prepare us for our 2016 Fun-Run and make it even bigger and better again.
 Web site & registration issues need to be reviewed. This postponed to a later date for further discussion.
 A new role of web site liaison was recommended. Also a Facebook Manager.
 More quality prizes are needed for the winners of the 5km team run.
 Special mention was made of Office Max (Kevin Obern) who provided the bulk of prizes.
 Winners’ names from all categories are to be published in the Bulletin.
 Recommendation that the walkers set off earlier so all teams finish at a similar time, rather than the 5 km
runners finishing early and waiting for the majority of runners and walkers to finish. There are however
difficulties with this. Comment was made that the event ran to time so less of an issue this year.
 The results be emailed to all entrants & sponsors, and not only to the supreme winning team.
 Concern was expressed regarding lack of attention given to the Volunteer Marshalls. A snack pack with
water bottles to be issued in future.
 SPONSORS feedback.

What are their expectations of this event-how did it work for them?
Sponsors need to be kept aware of this upcoming event well before the day. Possible contact three
times a year to potential Sponsors via emails/flyers.
The sponsor’s tent not well used. Is this necessary in future as there was enough publicity.
 Suggestion made for a combined cycle & fun run walk event by Norm. This was refused for safety concerns
& management issues.
 All data base information to be handed over to one specific person. At this time that is Moira.
 It was noted that many corporate teams from last year did not enrol or had fewer entrants. We need to
understand reason/s for this.
 General agreement that a TRAINING SCHEDULE IS REQUIRED for prospective teams-entrants. This to be
sent out 6 months prior to the day.
 Recommendation that there be a ‘FOLLOW-UP TEAM’ to move in after the event and manage-reviewrecord the “happenings”. This to have the effect of “new eyes” as well as relieving the organisers.
 2015 there were fewer runners & more walkers.
 Comments that the route is a hard course particularly when windy & the uphill start.
 Possibility of an analysis of the hard core 10km runners with a view to targeting bigger numbers of these
in future.

 Recommendation that all participants be sent an EVALUATION sheet. (Stephen Passmore to implement).
 MUSIC. This had a positive effect with many positive comments from both runners & the workers.
 Light Horse BBQ contribution to be re-evaluated. Confusion regarding charge for the sausages. Suggestion
may be Rotarians man their own BBQ.
 Suggestion for an after run-walk activity, of a “photo booth” or similar for team & individual photos.
 Greater publicity/display given to sponsors names/logos.
 General agreement that the “Timing Guy” was excellent-both expertise & attitude. Feedback also required
from him as to the running of this event.

OTARA LAKES PROJECT – Update by Brendan Kelly

The immediate requirement is the proposed clean-up of dumped tyres which has an estimated cost of $9,000.

This cost will be met in part by the Council ($4500) and GETBA. (Troy i/c environmental issues) $2000.

NZ Post-Quest-Goodman sponsoring the balance.

Rotary Club Highbrook in consideration for the remaining $500.

The Otara Lakes clean-up is a 10 year project and is still in the planning stage. Small steps to start with.

Total estimated cost $30m.

It was noted that all the tributaries running into the Tamaki River are as yet un-named.

Brendan reported on attending the Blue-Green conference. After discussion with Nick Smith (Minister of the
Environment) $1-2 million could be given by the Council to this project, followed by further funding.

FLAT BUSH PRIMARY SCHOOL – Update by Moira McGowan
 DICTIONARIES. Our commitment is for 65 dictionaries per year.
 Last year’s donation was a huge success with students-parents & staff
 The gardens need refurbishing with more bark with an alternative to the Punga logs. Further garden extension
requested.
 A Rotary working bee to be arranged. Date TBA.
 Cooking lessons on stream for parents. Most successful as they learnt how to cook NZ vegetables.
 Students’ attitude to learning & school in general now sky high due to Rotary participation & prizes.

Abstract from Newsletter:
Highbrook Rotary donates $2,000 to Kenzie's Gift
Over 400 runners joined in the Highbrook Rotary's February
2015 Business House Fun Run, raising funds for four charities
including Kenzie's Gift.
A wonderful donation of $2,000 was made by the Club in
support of our community work with children and families.
Highbrook Vice President Brendan Kelly said, "Nic spoke to our
Members last year and we were moved by her story and
courage, particularly in the context of Kenzie's illness.
As a Rotary Club we support a number of charities in different
ways, all done from love, commitment and Members giving
freely of their time and energy. We were so pleased that we
could help Kenzie's Gift with this donation from our run."
We extend our thanks to Highbrook Rotary Club for their
generous support of our work.
