Kia ora and welcome back
Term two brings the start of the cooler weather and with that some dreaded
coughs and colds. For the benefit of all, if you even suspect your child may be
unwell, please keep them at home to avoid infecting others.
Barbara will be away sunning herself in Rarotonga until Wednesday 29th April
and Birgit and Donna will be filling in for her – yes we are all very jealous!
We welcome two new Management Committee members this term. Aaron
Birley who has taken on the role of Treasurer and Kim Metahysa. We are
always interested in recruiting committee members to either our
Management or Fundraising Committees. Please talk to Diane or Adele if you
are interested in contributing to either.
You will notice around the centre that the teachers have been very
busy making resources and creating new areas of play and wall
displays. One of the projects we are working on is reviewing our
outdoor area and we invite you to share your thoughts and ideas with
us. On the wall to your right as you walk out the french doors you will
see a ‘mood board’ with some inspiring photos and a place for you to
comment. Please also feel free to talk to any of the teachers about this
– we value your input.
The new roster for parent helping is up at the sign in desk and needs filling up.
If your child is still in a settling phase, please don’t rush into signing up until
they are settled as this can disrupt the process. This term runs for 11 weeks
so we really do need everyone else to fulfil their parent help commitment and
sign up at least once this term. Please let me know asap if you can help out
the first week back (we are covered for Wednesday afternoon).
At the start of this term, can we ask that
each family supply a box of tissues please
and if you have any spare plastic shopping
bags, we will happily take them off your
hands.
We are also on the hunt for tiles suitable
for mosaics as well as lids (milk bottles/
jars) for activities.
We also desperately need some old clothes
to add to our supply of spare clothes. In
particular we need winter pants, tops and
undies for toddlers and preschool children.
Just a reminder to please
keep snack boxes small (and
named) with a bit of finger
food – just some fruit and
crackers is great and please
bear in mind allergies so no
nuts, egg or yoghurts.
End of Year Tax Receipts are
now available to be
collected from Adele.
We are very excited about our up-coming event!
This is a major fundraising for Highbury House and we need your support to make it as successful as
possible.
At the beginning of the term we will be asking all our families to assist us with ticket sales.
We have done the hard work of securing an excellent covers band with great reviews and music known
to us all. We have also secured an awesome local venue with a bar and room to dance and we have no
doubts this will be a fun night.
All you need to do is get your friends together…maybe a girl’s night; a boy’s night; a date night; –
whatever you want it to be!

During the first week of term, the children at Highbury House will be working with Cath to create a wreath that
will be laid at the service by one our Committee members – below is some information on that event for you.
SATURDAY 25TH APRIL – Anzac Day (Reference http://www.birkenhead.net.nz)
In this our 100th anniversary and as a token of respect 16 New Zealand Flags will be raised around throughout the village
to honour the memory of the 16 sons from Birkenhead who lost their lives in the first world war & complement those
poppy flags organised by the Local Board. The tradition of raising New Zealand flags was first seeded in the 1920’s when
the soldiers returned from the First World War. Birkenhead sent 261 men to Egypt and Gallipoli, and the trenches of
Belgium and France.
The Anzac day parade is a very moving local tradition for the community that was founded on the Sugar works. At one
point nearly 2/3 of the village was employed by Chelsea Sugar. It was Chelsea Sugar that signalled the end of the First
World War on 11 November 1918 by blowing the Sugar works whistle. We lost 16 beautiful young sons in that first war.
RSA donation boxes are scattered throughout the village.
Note: This year 2015 Anzac’s day falls on a Saturday the public holiday is observed on Monday 27th April
