HRCR ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The HRCR Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday the 18 of April at Hellidon Lakes Hotel
centrally situated near Daventry and will start at 2pm The formal notice and nomination papers for the
AGM was distributed together with last months Old Stager magazine.

Despite the prevailing weather conditions with winds, snow and heavy rain and the last minute
seeding changes due to the MSA Safety ruling five registered mini crews sat off into the stages of
Gartheinig, Big Ray, Dyfi Main for a two loop circuit broken up by Service back at Dogellau.
Clive King, co driven by Anton Bird in an Austin Mini Cooper ‘S’ set off seeded 92, but luck was not on
their side as in stage 2 a plug lead came off and a the same thing happened in stage four meaning
the crew dropped time during those stages. However this did not stop them and tied stages times on
stage 2 with total of 6:18 with Andrew O’Hanlon.
Mini Rally Driver Andrew O’Hanlon partnered by James Crook set off as car 95 in their Austin Cooper
‘S’ after a year off the stages. Chasing Clive King and Eric Davis throughout the day Andrew and
James were always within 40 seconds of Clive and 3 sec quicker than the Mini clubman of Eric
despite a misting windscreen and slippery stages to contend with. “I (Andrew) was concerned re my
clutch had to bleed it twice. Windscreen misting up too, like everyone else. In service are had to raise

the car, which helped on 2 usage. Slight misfire at high revs“ Luckily for Andrew and James the
nd
thrust bearing said enough was enough on the finish arch and were happy with 2 in Class and
second mini home.
Mini Clubman Driver Eric Davis and regular co driver Russell Joseph started in 107. After a good start
and keeping close stage times with the other two leading minis the yellow mini decided it did not like
the conditions and the crew failed to get to the end of stage four after service. It was reported as
holed gearbox that forced the retirement.
Shame Gamble and Jonny ‘Tad’ Evans made up the fourth crew out on the
rally in their Morris Mini Cooper ‘s’
Jonny who is use to sitting in Manta was quoted to say at the end of the event “Everyone should do a
least one Rally in a mini, it been a laugh, but there is no where to put anything, there is not even a
helmet net in the back I had to hold everything” Their times for the stages meant they finished 4th in
class.
The last crew contesting the Minisport Mini Challenge 2015 were Bruce Mills and Paul Kendrick in
their Morris Mini. The crew only 15 sec off Clive on stage two the pairing were putting good times in

all day and were rewarded with 3 in class at the end of the event.
Clive King and Anton Bird completed the Rally with a time of 53.01. They finished 7th in Cat 2 and 1st
in class. Not only did they take maximum point from the event they also had their names picked for a
free entry to WalesRally GB.

HRCR SPEED SERIES
The first round of the new HRCR speed Series has just run at Rockingham Raceway near Corby.
The sprint course was 1.6 miles long and Damon Green in his Volvo Amazon contested the event
improving his times as the day went on.

Damon is a geologist and has been competing in rallies for over 14 years. The car was
originally converted to a rally car for the 1998 Monte Carlo Classic where it was used as a
video car for “Not the full Monte” He has competed on various Historic road rallies over the
years resulting in several class wins.

There is a lot of interest in the HRCR Speed Series and these are a few pointers for those who still
have to enter their first event
What do I need to take part?
Any Historic Car may take part.
There is a class within section S (page 336) of the blue book for just about anything!
Vehicles must comply with section J (page 144) of the blue book and the following:
Historic Road rally vehicles will normally be in (S11). (page 340)
Roadgoing Series Production and Roadgoing Specialist Production cars.
S11 is for vehicles with light modifications. You do not need a roll cage or bucket seats.
You will however need the basic safety items as follows, an effective means of closing the
throttle. Yellow tape on the earth lead of a secured battery, a driver's seat that does not tilt.
Historic Stage rally vehicles will normally be in (S12). (page 341)
Modified Series Production Cars and Modified Specialist Production Cars.
The most important common required item is the timing strut. S 10.9. page 340.
This is usually made of alloy and fits on the front of the vehicle. It is there to break the start
and finish beam that determines your run times.
Timing Struts
Where timing is activated by a light beam, the vehicles will be fitted at the front with a
vertical timing strut, minimum vertical height 254mm, the bottom of which shall be not less
than 180mm and no more than 200mm from the ground. The strut will be in matt black on
both sides, over its total area, which shall be not less than 254mm by 51mm. No other, or
further forward, part of the vehicle may interrupt these dimensions or actuate the timing.
There is a timing beam close to the start line. (64 feet) This measures what they term the
launch time. This is basically your coordination between the brain, clutch and throttle
control when starting your run from standstill.

Event Course.
The events usually run at least two practice runs and two timed runs.
There is usually the opportunity to "walk the course" or conduct a low speed convoy run
before competition commences.
Competing cars are usually kept in a “paddock” between competitive runs.
This gives competitors to chat with each other and take in the social atmosphere.

A minimum of any current MSA National ‘B’
Competitors.
As a competitor you will need for your own personal safety the following items complying
with MSA 2015 Blue Book regulations.
Crash helmet to a minimum of the following:
Snell 2005, Snell 2010, BS6658 Type A/FR, SFI Foundation 31.1A, 31.2A. page 177.
Overalls to FIA 1986 Standard. FIA 8856-2000. Woven Identity label on neck of overalls.
Flame resistant gloves. (K 14.3 e gloves) page 174.

DEVON CLASSIC RALLY 2015
38 crews have now reserved entries for the Devon Classic Rally, organised by South Hams Motor
Club, on 26th-27th September, and the hotel is reporting almost as many room bookings. There are
only a few of the initial ‘reserved’ rooms still available. A wide variety of vehicles including a Jaguar
XK150, a Healey 3000, several Minis, Cortinas, Amazons and MGBs are all on the list.
Clerk of the Course Andy Ballantyne reports “The route and tests are now with the MSA for approval
and we have had a very positive response from the landowners of the venues we intend using. I’m
really pleased with the route and tests we have planned.” Saturday is based in and around Exeter
Racecourse and in the nearby Haldon Hills. The Sunday route will be around Oakhampton and taking
in some stunning scenery around Dartmoor. The route will be defined in an easy to follow ‘roadbook’
without having to resort to tricky navigation - an ideal event for beginners and novices.
A reminder - the closing date for confirmed ‘paid’ entries at the ‘early bird’ rate of £495 (a

saving over a £100) is 30 April.
There has already been a good response with people already offering to marshal on the event but
many more will be required. Please contact below with any offers of help.
As well as there being event awards for the best HRCR Crew, all crews with both HRCR members
starting the event, will go into a draw where the winners will receive a year’s free HRCR membership
on their next renewal.

HRCR SCENIC TOURS
The Adventures of Dippy
My name is Dippy. For those of you who don’t know, the name Dippy came from my registration plate
TND - Totally Normal Dipstick. My dad died in January this year. We had had many wonderful times
together on scenic tours and other events with my mom, even if she did occasionally make a few
mistakes with her navigation.
After Dad died, I thought I was going to be discarded at first, as Mom had not done much driving for a
few years, but a lesson from a nice young man soon put her back on the road again. At the moment, I
am all she has got for wheels until my competition for her heart is delivered – a brand new red Polo by
the name of Poppy, bearing Dad’s cherished number - MKS 50. However, Poppy will have no chance
to compete with me on tours as I have a wealth of experience and will soon show this young upstart
that Mom and I can still do the business.

The first time we are off out to play properly will be on the Taith Cymru on the 29 March. Susan
Butcher - whose husband Ian gave the eulogy at Dad’s funeral - will be the co-pilot, so, with the help
of the two of them, we should get around OK. I think a sharing of the driving will be going on; I reserve
judgment on who performs best until after the event.
After my winter’s rest, I have had a bit of a refit with nice new red seat belts back and front. Mom has
been shown where the switches are for the headlights and wipers - so I think we will get on just fine.
There are still instructions to come as to the whereabouts of the dipstick and how to check the tyre
pressures. All in good time.
To all our good friends - wish us luck at the start of the season. After the Taith, an event in Belgium is
the next event on the agenda. Watch this space for my report if I survive!

IN MEMORY OF MIKE STRATTON
The total amount of donations made in memory of Mike by both the huge crowd who attended his
funeral and from those who could not make it on the day was really quite tremendous. Rather than
sending flowers, friends and family were invited to make donations that would be divided between
Devon Air Ambulance and Help for Heroes – both charities that Mike was keen to support.
The total exceeded £1,470 – an amount that Mike’s Widow Hilary was quite blown away with. “I just
want everyone who was so generous to know how grateful I am. Such an amount is a fitting testimony
to Mike’s memory. He would have been overwhelmed.”

DONINGTON HISTORIC FESTIVAL 2nd to 4th MAY 2015
The Midlands Region of the HRCR will once again be running an Autotest on the Melbourne Loop of
the Donington Race Circuit. This will take place over the May Bank Holiday weekend as one of the
attractions of the 2015 Donington Historic Festival to which HRCR members are invited to take part
as participants on the circuit, or to assist with the running and organisation of the event.
There has been an excellent response with a varied selection of historic cars taking part and the next

Midlands Area Meeting on 14 of April will be used to update members with information about this
event
This is a great opportunity for our members either to have a go for the very first time or hone your
Autotest skills by participating on an event that is run in a friendly and informal atmosphere.
We also require volunteers to help with setting up the course and generally assisting with the day to
day running of the event.
There is no entry fee and those who participate receive tickets for entry into all the activities over the
Donington Historic Festival weekend.

CHESHIRE PLAINS TOUR
The HRCR North West Area will be organising a new event to test the mettle of both navigators and

drivers on Saturday 27 June. Designed to encourage those who have been active participants in
scenic tours to move towards competitive rallies, plus seasoned rally crews, the occasion will be in
the form of a tour but with the emphasis on testing the navigator’s skills and driver’s awareness.
There will be no competitive timing and a variety of navigational styles will be used to determine the
route. A number of Controls plus Code Boards will be used to present confirmation that the correct
route has been followed. No awards will be offered other than the satisfaction of fully completing the
correct route as planned by the organisers.
The event is open to all comers, whether HRCR members or not and a Competition Licence is not
required. Classic and interesting cars are welcomed with a maximum entry of 60 cars.
Based mainly in Cheshire, an interesting route of around 160 miles has been planned with the start at
Gawsworth Hall, near Congleton, with lunch and the finish near Holmes Chapel.
An entry fee of £59 for a crew of two includes tea/coffee at the start plus a breakfast roll, route
instructions, and tour plate. An individual buffet lunch is also included in the entry fee.

3rd DERBYSHIRE DALES DRIVE
This is one of just three events that the HRCR organises within its own Scenic Tour series.
Clerk of the Course John Ball has developed a route so that the Start, Lunch Halt and Finish
can all be at Abbotsholme School, the venue that proved so successful last year.
Even before the launch at the Gaydon Open Day, entries had been received and some 25 have
now been accepted. So that you can ensure your place on this now popular event, an Entry
Form is included at the end of this Newsletter.
Even if you have neither a pre 1990 or otherwise ‘interesting’ car, you can still be involved.
Whilst one advantage of the figure-of-eight format is the reduction in the number of officials
required, others will likely to be needed, so please volunteer your services.

DEAN & THE MARCHES
Our February meeting moved from our usual base in Ross-on-Wye. We had been invited to the
workshops of Nigel Mummery, a local man who has rather a nice collection of modern Ford rally cars.
Nigel’s premises is well out in ‘the sticks’ but with map references, postcodes and a few well placed
arrows eventually a total of 44 people turned up on a very dark and wet night.
Once inside in the dry we were able to view a fabulous collection of Ford RS200, Focus WRC and
Escort Cosworth. After poking around these wonderful cars for some time we then all viewed the film,
‘Too Fast to Race’ about the rise and sudden departure of the Group B rally cars. It was then to the
kitchen for the usual snacks.

Our next meeting will be on Monday 20 April, 8.00 pm.
We will meet at the Wye Valley Brewery at Stoke Lacey, Herefordshire, HR7 4HG or 149/620494 for a
guided tour of the brewery and afterwards some tasting of the products.

The HRCR Bristol and Bath area meeting will be held on Wednesday 22nd April at The George at
Nettlebridge from 7.30 pm onwards. The George is on the A367 Radstock to Shepton Mallet road
near Oakhill.
The George serves good food. Please note that this is a change of date and venue from our
meetings for the last three months.
Please come and join us and if you can please come in your classic “Transport of Delight” in the
words Flanders and Swann.
You are invited also to join us at Bath Motor Club’s Butcombe Brewery Tour on April 28th. Please
come and join us with your friends.
Looking ahead we have arranged a repeat brewery tour of Butcombe Brewery at Wrington in
Somerset on Tuesday April 28th at 7.30 pm start.
The evening starts with a tour of Butcombe Beer’s new brewery that lasts about an hour, to be
followed by a tasting of the local brew in the bar and the beer is free ...yes ... really.
This will be followed by a Butcombe Bangers and Mash meal at the Swan at Rowberrow ( about 5
minutes down the road) for £5 a head.
I can promise you a good evening.

For those of you unfamiliar with Jogularity it’s simple. You will be given the complete 40 mile route by
tulip road book and you will also be told the due time at each junction listed in that road book. The
route will contain secret intermediate time controls which you are expected to arrive on time. If you fail
to do so early and late penalties will apply.
The complete route will be timed at average speeds from 15mph to 30 mph. The idea is to encourage
Bath and neighbouring club members to use any form of transport to have a go. This is simple
straightforward navigation, easy to achieve average speeds with the need to concentrate and follow
the correct route.

Entry Fee is £10 and I am trying to arrange the cheapest insurance for those of you who do not have
the privilege of insurance to allow this type of event.
Entries for the HRCR Scenic Tours series Bath Motor Club Aquae Sulis Tour to take place on Sunday
July 12th 2015 are progressing well. We currently have well over 30 entries.
We can promise you a super day of classic motoring with a superb route and a wonderful National
Trust Manor House as a lunch stop and a carvery meal at the beautiful Orchardleigh Estate near
Frome at the finish.

NORTH WEST AREA
I understand that Shons run on 17 March, St Patricks Day, was very good. My recently acquired love
of hospital food kept me away unfortunately. Lack of winter studs on my golf shoes led me to a hefty

shunt on the 14 hole resulting in a nasty broken wrist.
18/19 April is the Sandbach Transport Festival-well worth a visit. Some show cars would be good. I
am lucky enough to be a judge on the Sunday. The atmosphere is excellent in the town and Phil
Bateman has drawn a good entry of over 340 cars over the 2 days for this years event

Tuesday 21 April-The Queen is celebrating her 89 birthday which falls on this day and we thought
we would join in. For those unlucky not to be at the palace, I have organised a short run of about 35
miles with easy navigation. Any car. The start is from Gawsworth Hall with signing on from 6-30pm to
take advantage of the light. Would be nice if we could sport something patriotic-finish for refreshments
at the Rose and Crown at Allgreave-cost £5 per head-some more on the website-I will need to know
numbers so can you let me know if entering
4 and 5 May is the Gawsworth Hall Classic Car Show and helpers are once again required-the Hall is
very good at providing us with a base and it would be good if we can once again help them out over
the weekend. Could you let me or Shon know if you can help
19 May is Phil`s visit to Poole`s Cavern nr Buxton-there are now details in the newsletter and on the
website-sounds a good trip out and his previous adventures have always been absorbing-you need to

SE LONDON & SURREY
Area members together with guests from Southern Car Club gathered on 26th March at the usual The
Bell venue.
All joined in tribute to PY, a rally mentor to all present. Hugely respected for largely creating the
means and motivation of why we were there. Sadly missed.
Another sombre note in some ways was the evening's proceedings as we worked our way through the
Brian Hugh Memorial Quiz in tribute and memory to our old friend and quizmaster supreme.
Two tricky rounds left a pair of teams level and forced to the tie-breaker and possible intervention by
the TMO.
Further tenterhooks as the competition went to the wire, victory going to the bi-club Williamson Team
(Dave and Joan members of HRCR and SCC and ably supported by wing-man Geoff Cooper) on the
very last question, overcoming a determined effort by SCC.
The trophy heads North for its year, Joan and Dave "condemned" to setting next year's quiz.
April sees a burst of vintage activity, with two Area members entered on the Flying Scotsman.
Nicholas Pryor has promised a de-brief, hopefully helped by Richard Jeffcoate, Chevrolet Opera
Coupe and Riley 16/4 Special respectively.

DONINGTON HISTORIC FESTIVAL : PRE-MEETING
The Region will once again be running an autotest / autosolo on the Melbourne Loop of the
Donington Race Circuit during the three days of the Festival. This is a great opportunity for
Members either to have a go for the very first time or hone your skills by participating on an
event that is run in a friendly and informal atmosphere.
All HRCR members are invited to take part either as participants on the circuit, or to assist with
the running and organisation of the event. There is no entry fee and those who participate
receive tickets for entry into all the activities over the Donington Historic Festival weekend. An
Entry Form is appended which could be brought to this pre-meeting.
But if this is not for you, then volunteers to help with setting up the course and generally
assisting with the day-to-day running of the event are also needed. Hopefully, the
organisational template used on previous occasions can be rolled out once more.

THE ‘COUSINS’ ARE COMING!
AUSTIN 7 DERIVATIVES ARE LINING UP FOR THE NATIONAL RALLY IN JULY
The theme of the National Austin 7 rally in July is ‘Austin 7s and their Cousins’ and already a unique
collection of rare vehicles is lining up to join the more familiar models of Austin 7 that form the main displays
on Sunday 5th July at Beaulieu in Hampshire.
The organisers have recently heard from a group of enthusiasts in Germany who are intending to bring their
‘BMW Dixi’ cars to the rally and it is expected that they will be joined by a substantial group of French
‘Rosengarts’. These are derivatives of the pre-war Austin 7 and were manufactured abroad under licence.
With the possibility of at least a dozen, very rare, military versions of the Austin 7 also attending the event, the
special display areas on the rally field are guaranteed to be of huge interest to enthusiasts and the general
public.
The rally is organised by the 750 Motor Club and is open to all Austin 7 owners regardless of whether or not
they are club members. Austins form the core of the event, but pre-1975 vehicles of all makes are invited
to attend and will have a designated parking area on the rally field.
Members of the Trials section of the 750 Motor Club will be demonstrating the extraordinary ability of drivers
and the amazing agility of their purpose-built cars on the steep slopes of the rally field banking. There will be a
large variety of autojumble and spares stalls, and, throughout the day informal driving challenges will be
taking place in the arena.
The National Austin 7 Rally is a wonderful and entertaining day out for enthusiasts and for families alike – and
a great place to come if you are contemplating buying one of these ever-popular and relatively inexpensive
pre-war cars. Austin 7 owners are among the friendliest of old car enthusiasts and will happily chat and give
advice to prospective owners. Beaulieu is home to a wide variety of attractions and the rally entry ticket also
gives access to the historic Palace House and Gardens and The National Motor Museum.
