extremely rare Officers Model trapdoor Springfield rifle! This is an officers
model stock with a target rifle conversion to 45-90 caliber. This rifle is the
1873 first type “High Arch Breech block.” Cartouches include “P” in oval
stamped behind the trigger tang and the “LMP 1890” inspection cartouche
in rectangle opposite the lockplate on left side of the gun. This is possibly
one of 477 “Officer’s Rifle” made for high ranking military personnel. This
rifle has the advanced 1,500 yard windage and elevation sight as well as
the silver front fore grip mount exclusive to the “Officers Rifle “only. This
rifle has the tool /cleaning kit compartment in the buttstock. It is believed
this is a refurbished of the period of 1890 sporting rifle for military elite.
Flayderman’s documents that the 1873 model Trapdoors were converted
to Officers Models and are very rare. Some were also refurbished in 1890
and are so stamped as is this rifle. The barrel length is 33 inches. Because
there is so much mystery to these RARE AND DESIRABLE trapdoor special
models and because no one is really sure what special feature each officer
could order, it is believed this is an authentic item that has been re-blued
and chamber extended. This is quite possibly an “Original Officer’s Rifle”
but without further research we cannot verify this. Est. $3,500 ~ $7,500

Lot # 3095 Rare Snider Howdah
Pistol c.1858 Rare Snider .577-450
2nd model conversion pistol. 1858
Enfield V.R. ROYAL STAMP. Excellent
shape with graduated adjustable
sight. This is a large bore rifled pistol
converted from the Enfield muskets
of 1858. Converted by the Royal
Armories in London approximately
1869. It is thought these pistols were
made for the East India Company,
although that has not been verified.
Adapted in 1866 as a breech-loading
conversion of the .577 Enfield
single shot swing-over breach block, which was a modified percussion
lock originally. The Mark III” IMPROVED” locking breach was a “new
manufacture...safer to shoot.” There were several modifications over the
years to the Enfield. This pistol represents the last and best modification
of the series as it has the final and strongest ‘trap door” arrangement and
a rifled barrel. Definitely a two-handed black powder cartridge pistol of
the 19th century. Excellent shape overall with nice furniture wood and all
markings clear and crisp. Est. $900 ~ $1,750 FHWAC# 27828

Forgett started Dixie Arms in

wonderful piece has a brass frame and beautiful aged blue barrel,
cylinder, load lever, trigger, hammer and wedge. The frame and
backstrap and trigger guard are brass and the grips are aged walnut.

Lot # 3109 Underlever John Rigby & Co. High Grade 12 Gauge
Double-Barreled Hammer Shotgun c.1871 Very ornate 12 ga. John
Rigby &Co hammer shotgun with checkered straight stock, circa 1871.
30 inch blued Damascus barrels with “JOHN RIGBY&CO 72 S TAMES
S ST. LONDON” on smooth concave barrel rib. Two and 1/2 inch
chambers. Barrel flats and splinter fore end have serial number as well
as barrels. Each barrel has “H.W.” on bottom. Splinter foregrip is the
early style wedge release. Recoil shields have the ornate and desirable
hammer fences. Has finely detailed and tight English scroll engraving
on the entire receiver, trigger guard, underlever and fore grip. Bores
are very smooth and nice. John Rigby & Co. made some of the finest
and most desirable large caliber double rifles and shotguns in the
world. Many guns were custom built to customer specifications. This
beautiful piece needs some minor restoration to bring it back to its
former glory; the checkering could use re-freshening and the hammers
are non-matching period replacements. These black powder highly
ornate Damasus guns of excellent quality are becoming more scarce
as collectors recognize quality workmanship of the Victorian age.
Restored or originals of this high grade double bring as much as 30007500 in the U.S. and in England. A great restoration project collectible.

Lot # 3110 PARKER “D” Grade 10 Gauge Underlifter Hammer
Shotgun c.1871-1877 Parker “D” Grade hammer shotgun circa 18711877. America’s finest shotgun of the period and here is an example
of a higher grade. Hammer guns were graded a little different than
hammer-less guns of later production. Parker used an “AA” GRADE
as one off their top grades and went down the alphabet from there.
This gun has nice bores, ornate engraving, double “X” wood stock
and foregrip, nice crisp checkering and matching original hammers.
The barrels have been shortened to 271/2 inches from (most likely)
32 inches and a rubber recoil butt plate has been installed many
years ago. The barrels and receiver have been nicely re-blued and the
lockup and fit and finish are very nice. A letter may be obtained from
the PARKER COLLECTORS ASSOCIATION to find out the history of
this beautiful double gun. An overall excellent collector piece for the
restorer or a classic black powder piece for the sport shooter. A very
nice and rare gun for either. Est. $450 ~ $1,000 FHWAC# 26454

Co. Semi-Hammerless
12 Gauge Single-Barrel
Shotgun c.1883 A.M.
Arms- Pat’d Mar 21.82
May 29, 83. Unknown
maker from Boston Mass.
An unusual action design: not hammerless, nor hammer but “semihammer.” 28 inch Damascus barrel. Semi pistol grip single barrel
shotgun with pistol grip and fore grip checkering and a steel butt plate.
Very nice condition cartridge shotgun from the era of experimental
cartridge guns. How it works: the action is opened, a shell is loaded,
the action is then closed, the cocking lever is depressed and the gun is
fired. The action is then opened and the fired shell is extracted. A very
nice working piece of Americana for the collector or target shooter.

Lot # 3113 Whitney Phoenix Cal Swing-Lock 12 Gauge Shotgun
c.1874 Unusual “Trapdoor Style” “Swing lock” single barrel black powder
shotgun. 30 inch barrel with swing block receiver. Very nice and unusually
well-balanced shotgun with nice aesthetics. These were made by Whitney
Arms under the trade name Phoenix. Total production was reported
as 5,000, although it is believed far less were made as they are rarely
encountered. These black powder cartridge shotguns rarely have the
Whitney name only “Phoenix.” Their name comes from the fact that they
were rebuilt 58 caliber Whitney musket barrels. Overall shape and fit and
finish are very good. Swing over breech has a shell extractor when opened.
Pat’d May 24, 1874. These early breech loaders were at the beginning of
the cartridge era when gun makers were experimenting with different lock
systems like the Swing Lock. Est. $250 ~ $700 FHWAC# 27821
Lot # 3114 Very Rare Dexter Smith Rolling Block 12 Gauge Shotgun Dexter Smith was the son of H.Smith, of Smith and Wesson. He produced
only 300 of these falling block 12 ga. shotguns. 30 inch barrel. The falling
block was actuated by a lever on the right side of the receiver. One of these
interesting shotguns was at Little Bighorn, carried by Private Henry A.
Baily carried in his scabbard. Action works well and the wood furniture
is very nice. Overall, nice and rare piece of American history with Little
Bighorn heritage. Est. $250 ~ $750 FHWAC# 27818
