Grief & Loss: Successful
Coping
Grief is the natural reaction to loss; losses of all
kinds. Although there are a variety of reactions to
loss, grief following the death of a loved one can
be traumatic and is typically life-altering. How
can we know what is normal in grief and if or
when professional help is needed? Is grief a mental illness? Should bereaved persons take
anti-depressants? Is counseling essential to
successfully cope with grief? This presentation
will be presented in an accessible manner for both
bereaved persons and caregivers who help others
with their grief, both professionals and volunteers.
Counseling for
Traumatic Loss and
Complicated
Bereavement
Although grief is the natural reaction to loss; losses
of all kinds; what about those bereaved persons
who are not able to successfully cope with their loss
(s) in such a way that they can move on with life?
This workshop will address: How to define traumatic loss?; Examples of complicated bereavement;
Using the DSM-5 for complicated bereavement;
and Specific strategies and techniques for working
with traumatic loss and complicated bereavement.

DSM-5: What’s New?
The DSM-5 has undergone the most dramatic
revision since the introduction of the DSMIV in 1994. Experienced mental health professionals are already familiar with the major
diagnostic categories in mental health treatment; however, several significant changes
have been introduced in the DSM-5. This 6
1/2 hour workshop will review the major
changes to the recent revision of the DSM.
Obtaining a copy of the DSM-5 would be
useful for this workshop, although not required. Cases will be used to compare the
two versions of the DSM. Brief quizzes will
be used throughout the workshop for clinicians to test their mastery of the new system
of diagnosis.
