April 12-18 is National Volunteer Week! Did you know the national rate
of volunteerism is 47% in Canada and in Nova Scotia it is 54%? More than 1/2 of

On June 16, 2015 Engage Nova Scotia, Halifax Partnership, Cape Breton Partnership and the Community Sector Council
of Nova Scotia are coming together to co-host a provincial dialogue more than a year after the release of the One NS
Report. It is expected that 300 people will come together in the new Halifax Central Library—with many more meeting in
locations around the province. CSC’s Regional Convenors will be hosting several “satellite sessions” to engage citizens
across all regions of Nova Scotia. This will be a time to regroup, take stock, and mobilize efforts to address the
challenges and opportunities we see in our communities and our province.

Imagine Canada’s Public Policy Roadshow is coming to Nova Scotia!

The Community Sector Council of Nova Scotia is pleased to co-host a FREE workshop for board and staff members of
charities in Nova Scotia. The Public Policy Roadshow will feature Imagine Canada’s Dr. Michelle Gauthier, VP Public
Policy and Community Engagement, and Bill Schaper, Director of Public Policy and Community Engagement.
The workshop will provide information about how and why charities participate in public policy while shedding light on
charities’ responsibilities on: reporting of political activities, federal lobbyist registration, and engagement during the
federal election.

The Ecology Action Centre’s is working on a guide to help non-profits save money and help the planet by reducing their

The Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia administers a Community Grants Program to support individuals and
organizations province-wide to undertake programs or services that will benefit the mental health of individuals throughout
Nova Scotia. The Foundation strives to fund programs that are developed by Nova Scotians who are passionate about
changing the way people think about mental illness. More information about eligibility and application requirements can be
found on the Foundation's website. The second quarter call for applications has just been announced, and all applications for
consideration must be received in the office of the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia by 4:00 pm, Friday, May 22nd

Call for Proposals to Address Social Isolation Among Seniors
Government of Canada: funding to address social isolation among seniors A call for proposals for pan-Canadian projects
funded through the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) will be launched in mid-May 2015 and be open for six weeks.
Successful projects will focus exclusively on addressing social isolation among seniors and will be funded between $150,000
and $750,000, over a period of up to three years. For this call for proposals, the Government of Canada is partnering with the

J.W. McConnell Family Foundation and its Innoweave initiative to support the development and implementation of innovative
community-wide approaches to reduce social isolation among seniors. In the upcoming call for proposals, priority will be given
to innovative applications from communities that will use a coordinated approach to reducing the social isolation of seniors.
This will likely result in successful applications being geographically grouped. These new partnerships will be multisectoral,
involving the traditional and new players required to generate significant change. For information visit:

Canada Arts Presentation Fund
The objective of the Canada Arts Presentation Fund (CAPF) is to give Canadians access to a variety of professional
artistic experiences in their communities. The CAPF recognizes that arts presenters are key partners in achieving
this objective by providing financial assistance to organizations that professionally present arts festivals or
performing arts series, as well as their support organizations. April 30 is the application deadline for activities
starting between April 1 and June 30 of the following year. For more information visit

Enabling Accessibility in Communities
Projects may include:



renovating, retrofitting or constructing community facilities where programs and/or services are offered
to people with disabilities;
retrofitting motor vehicles used as community-based transportation; and,
providing information and communications technologies to make them more accessible for the
community.

Career Opportunity: The NSHRF’s REAL Evaluation Fellowship
The Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation’s (NSHRF) REAL (Relevant, Excellent, Accessible, Legitimate) Evaluation
Fellowship is a three-year, paid position aimed at providing education and practical experience to an individual in early
stages of a career in the field of program evaluation. This fellowship will provide the REAL Evaluation Fellow with
opportunities to build capacity in the core competencies required for achieving the Canadian Evaluation Society (CES)
professional designation of Credentialed Evaluator (CE). Deadline to apply to the position is May 4, 2015 with
