Sitting around the table to firstly
discuss the huge success of the 10th
anniversary last June, thoughts very
quickly moved on to 2015 – and how
the brilliance of 2014 could not only
be matched, but topped.
It’s fair to say there was some
concern from members as to how
2014 could be bettered.
There had been more than 60
events across the region, attended
by more than 6,000 delegates, and

Week could still be felt.

The 2015 Humber Business Week
takes place at an unprecedented
time for the Humber economy, with
the North at the heart of the political
agenda.

Those concerns about living up
to 2014 were clearly unfounded,
however, as when you look through
the programme of events lined-up
for the first week of June this year,
it is clear the momentum is greater
than ever.
This year’s programme covers the
widest range of industries yet, on
both banks of the Humber – from the
increasingly important developing
renewables and digital sectors to
the long-standing heartbeat of the
region through our ports.
What has been clear as the
programme for this year has come
together has been the special feeling
around Humber Business Week, and
the huge passion for it.

has benefitted from inward

whilst SGS has expanded its

and at the Humber Bridgehead
site. Collaboration between
businesses, training providers
and the LEP is resulting in skills
and employability being more
aligned to the opportunities offered
by the Humber’s new industries.
In December the Government
announced that the first National
College for Wind Energy would be
located on the Humber, recognition
indeed that the Humber is the UK’s
Energy Estuary.
Business Week is a firm fixture in
the region’s business calendar. It
makes a huge contribution to helping
businesses succeed and furthering
our regional economic prosperity.
It’s our opportunity to showcase
the Humber. It offers support for

the finale of Humber Business Week with a night of ‘Folk and Funk’ at
Kardomah94, hosted by Sowdens and Hull Folk Festival.

Emulating two of Hull’s finest, and most popular exports, The Beautiful
South and The Housemartins. The Beautiful Couch first formed in 2002,
playing all over the country. ‘The Couch’ built up a loyal following and a
huge reputation in the tribute band world.
Playing venues such as Liverpool’s The Cavern, the Matthew Street
Festival and the KC Stadium in Hull, they also supported Deacon Blue
and The Commitments at Humberfest!
After taking a few years off, the Couch returned for a one off gig at Hull
City Hall in May 2012. Such was the demand for the band to return, they
decided to grab their instruments and return to the stage.
We’ll be closing Bizweek with a great night featuring all the classic hits in
a two-hour set!

Hull based chartered surveyor Tim Wigglesworth, Development Manager
at estates solutions company Shared Agenda, will talk about how the
skills needed for his weekend job as a referee in rugby union’s Aviva
Premiership cross over into the world of everyday business leadership.
Tim will highlight how transferable the skills needed to control 30 highly
tuned athletes bashing into each other for 80 minutes are in relation to
the challenges we all face at work.
The talk will consider issues such as decision making, how to deal with
pressure, and the range of communication needed for different customers,
as well as revealing a few amusing insights.

With increased focus on Northern cities to help rebalance the UK economy,
this session will examine the key economic predictions from the latest EY
ITEM Club report and implications for businesses in the region.
Nick Fry, the former CEO of the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 team, will
be the key speaker at the annual Institute of Directors Humber Luncheon at
the start of this year’s Humber Business Week.
EY’s chief economist, Mark Gregory, will also share the findings from
the latest UK Attractiveness Survey, looking specifically at Yorkshire’s
performance in securing investment.
Now a commercial advisor, Nick looked after the racing sponsorship aspects
of the Mercedes AMG Petronas business.
It will be interesting to hear how the region is faring and the future
outlook for business.
He secured the services of Lewis Hamilton, replacing Michael Schumacher to
partner Nico Rosburg in the team’s pursuit of the 2013 World Championship.
Nick began his career with Ford Motor Company in 1977 as a graduate trainee.
During his high performance career, he worked with Ford in the UK, Detroit
and Germany, including a period as MD of Aston Martin, before joining
Prodrive in 2001; leading their expansion into engineering services, as well as
winning World Rally and Sports Car Championships.
The audience will have a better understanding of the life of an official at
the elite level of sport and, in particular how the role reflects many of the
behaviours we all need to display in our own working environments.
Working in F1 since 2002, he re-structured the team, grew sponsorship and
led the team to its first F1 victory and subsequent World Championships.
Nick was appointed a UK Business Ambassador by the UK Government in
2010 and promotes UK business expertise in High Performance Engineering.

The Port of Immingham is the UK’s largest by tonnage, handling over 55
million tonnes of cargo each year. It currently oversees the transit of almost
20 million tonnes of coal each year, which accounts for one third of the
nation’s requirement, while 30% of the UK’s fuel is supplied by refineries
situated adjacent to the port.
It is also the site of the world’s largest dedicated biomass terminal, built at a
cost of £130 million, which alongside its sister facility at the Port of Hull, will
supply six million tonnes of wood pellets to Drax Power Ltd to support their
conversion to low-carbon power generation.

Offshore Wind Connections (OWC) 2015 will be the third Team Humber
Marine Alliance (THMA) annual offshore conference and has become the
“must attend” event for all those interested in the growing offshore wind
sector in the North Sea and beyond.

North Sea and has views out to the Westermost Rough Wind Farm.

In this practical and informative session Rachael Alexander, a Behavioural

need to have heightened levels of self- awareness and more importantly
how to nurture these qualities in their team. A culture of self- awareness
creates an environment of positivity, trust and intimacy resulting in targets
being achieved and high energy workplace.

heritage of the Holderness coastline and Bridlington Bay area.
It will update on some recent heritage developments and suggest ways in
which these might be used to enhance the area’s economic development.
