IN ASSOCIATION WITH APPEAL Dear Friends, Greetings and Good wishes!! It's our pride and privilege to inform you all that the Society of Pharmacognosy, formerly known as Indian Society of Pharmacognosy (ISP) is one of the biggest conclaves of the Scientific community in this country. The advent of house by the name of Indian Society of Pharmacognosy is a clear omen of the foresightedness of the mastermind’s beings honoring the desk of herbs and their products since times immemorial. Every year, the society organizes a customary annual national convention and once in four year international conference to compile the thoughts of scientists and academicians engaged in Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry research. This year the Society of Pharmacognosy is organizing 19th Annual Convention and 2nd International Conference of Society of Pharmacognosy- 2015 (ICSP-2015) hosted by A. U. College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam from 20th March, 2015 to 22nd March, 2015. The theme of the Congress is "Discovery and Development of Botanicals as Phytomedicines: A Holistic Approach for Safe and Effective Health care" which is a promising scenario that needs to be taken note by the pharmaceutical world. The deliberations during the Conference are on various issues relating to the industry, regulatory, academia and community pharmacy by highly technical and professional intellectuals from the relevant branches of pharmacognosy and pharmacy from all over the globe and their collective wisdom will help in formulating newer policies for the country which in turn would go a long way in the betterment of mankind. More than 1000 national and international delegates are expecting to attend this conference. The conference provides a common platform to all the stake holders to facilitate interaction among peers and to update their knowledge to serve better in their field. On this occasion a documentary record of collection of Scientific, Professional and Marketing literature in the form of Souvenir- 2nd ICSP -2015 is going to be released and presented to each one of the delegate/participant. This conference exhibits latest technological developments, technology upgradation and adaptation in pharma industry with a display profile of equipment, instruments and utilities for pharma industry. A gigantic event of this magnitude can only be possible through patronage in terms of intellectual cum financial support and active participation from each one of you. Your esteemed patronage by way of sponsorship and publication and advertisement in the Souvenir - 19th Annual Convention and 2nd ICSP-2015 will go a long way in making this mammoth task possible and great success. We welcome you all for 19th Annual Convention and 2nd International Conference of Society of Pharmacognosy- 2015 during 20th March to 22nd March, 2015 and seeking your whole hearted support to make this event a grand success and a memorable event. COLLEGE OF PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES Andhra University is the second institute in the country to start Pharmacy courses at University level in late 1930’s. The Pharmacy course was initially offered in the B.Sc. Honors degree of chemical technology and as a specialization at M.Sc. Chemical Technology level. The importance of Pharmaceutical Sciences led to the formation of a separate department in 1951 as B. Pharm. course with late Prof. S. Rangaswamy as founder Head of the Department. The M.Pharm. courses were started in 1954. A separate Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences was formed in 1975. In 2006, the department was elevated as one of the constituent Colleges of Andhra University, and was named as A.U. College of Pharmaceutical Sciences. At present, the college offers B.Pharm, Pharma-D, Pharma-D (PB), M.Pharm with eight specializations namely Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Analysis and Quality Assurance, Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry, Pharmaceutical Management, Regulatory Affairs and Pharmacy Practice, and Ph.D. programme in all specialisations. The College has the distinction of being the first in the country to start pharmaceutical biotechnology division. The founder faculty members, Prof. S. Rangaswamy (late), Prof. V. Subba Rao (late), Prof. N. Viswanadham (late), Prof. K. Sambamurty (late) and Prof. E. Venkata Rao laid solid foundations and moulded the department into one of the best in the country. Eminent teachers and researchers who served as “Heads of the Department” in the past and contributed richly to its development include late Prof. S. Rangaswamy late Prof. V. Subba Rao, Prof. N. Viswanadham, late Prof. K. Sambamurty, Prof. E. Venkata Rao, Prof. D. Visweswaram, Prof. R.V. Krishna Rao, Prof. M. Vimala Devi, Prof. D. Venkata Rao, and Prof. P. Ellaiah, Prof. K.P.R. Chowdary, Prof. S. Satyanarayana, Prof. T. Satyanarayana, Prof. S. Ganapaty. Presently Prof. B.Ganga Rao serving as Principal of the College. SOCIETY OF PHARMACOGNOSY The Society of Pharmacognosy (ISP) is an organisation of scientists working in the field of Pharmacognosy with an objective to establish vital link between traditional knowledge of Ethnomedical practice and its utility in modern medicine through science. The scientists working in the area of phytochemistry, quality control and quality assurance of herbal drugs, herbal formulations and their clinical validation constitutes the strength of Society of Pharmacognosy. The Society endeavors to provide the Indian pharmacognosists and pharmaceutical Scientists with International exposure by organizing lectures and curriculum by acclaimed scientists in this field. The Indian Journal of Natural Products (IJNP) a quarterly journal of the society is regularly publishing scientific articles. CONFERENCE The World Health Organisation promotes the use of herbal medicine, thus herbal medicine has become big business. There is an increase of interest in the pharmaceutical industry to develop new medications from plants. Phytomedicine research has employed high-throughput screening methods and the increasingly popular “reverse pharmacology” methods. Discovery and development of Phytomedicines is the present day scenario of R & D of Industries from all over the globe. About 119 plant-derived drugs are commonly in use in many countries, 74% were discovered as a result of chemical studies directed at the isolation of the active constituents of plants used in traditional medicine. Well-known examples include the Cardiac Glycosides from Digitalis purpurea, the antihypertensive agent tranquilizer, reserpine from Rauvolfia serpentina, the antimalerial agent, quinine from Cinchona spp., and the analgesics, codeine and morphine from Papaver somniferum. Secondary metabolites isolated from medicinal plants have also served as precursors or models for the preparation of effective agents through semi-syntheses or lead-based total syntheses. Examples include the anticancer “Discovery and Development of Botanicals as Phytomedicines: A Holistic Approach for Safe and Effective Health Care” agent, etoposide, a semi-synthetic derivative of epipodophyllotoxin isolated from Podophyllum spp. and anticholinergic drugs alkaloids, atropine from Atropa belladonna etc., The present conference is planned to discuss various issues related to the discovery and development of botanicals as phytomedicines, validation and standardisation of herbal formulations. The conference will have a rarely happenned combination of experts, i.e., Botanists, Herbalists, Pharmacognosists, Phytochemists and the other related delegates from academia, industry, regulatory , ministry and, funding and planning agencies at a single platform to share their expertise and views.
