Class bridges communication gap
Thea Skinner
CSMNG
PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — A
class opened at Peterson Air Force Base Airman
and Family Readiness Center last month that seeks
to help servicemembers and their families become
better communicators.
It focuses on workplace communication, active
listening and tips about getting along with other
people.
Communication can be a vital characteristic in
workplace effectiveness. When a message is interpreted and the sender is approached about the
message, the interpretation may not be in sync
with the intended meaning. This conundrum is
what Jan Kienast, 21st Force Support Squadron
Airman and Family Readiness Flight community
readiness specialist, experiences in communication
processes on base.
“It seems there is a disconnect between what is
said and what is received,” Kienast said.
The class aims to break that barrier.
If one person in the workplace feels disrespected
and does not notify the other person, it may lead
to internalizing emotions, she said. The cultural
climate for communication is also a factor.
“In the military environment there are a lot of
things going on and a lot of messages are misinterpreted,” she said. “It is always better to say I do not
understand what you mean. It’s OK to ask people
questions — some people elaborate and others
don’t. Everyone likes to be taught a certain way.
“The reason that people are put in leadership
positions is to mentor the people under them,”
Kienast said. “If people are not getting the answers
they need and not getting mentored, they do a
task wrong.”
Often times when topics are not clarified, people
will shut down becoming uncommunicative, she
said.
Solutions to such issues involve taking people

communication class at the Peterson Air Force Base Airman and Family Readiness Center, June 23.
away from the normal environment and holding
a discussion, along with addressing topics as a
group.
“You can set goals as a group. When you have a
unit meeting, have goals on the agenda. It is all in
presentation,” said Martina Porter, 21st Medical
Operations Squadron family advocacy outreach
manager. “We want to be heard and respected.
When we feel we are not being respected we come
across as having an attitude.”
Staff Sgt. Trinity Perez, 21st Force Support
Squadron Aragon Dinning Facility night shift
supervisor, said she briefs her team at the beginning and end of the shift.
“What if the other person is not receiving you
the way you need and the other person seems to
be on the defensive,” Perez said.
Facilitators encourage establishing conversation
key points: objective, hopes for accomplishments
and purpose.
“You have to think about the conversation you
are about to have. If you are not mentally and emotionally there, then say when a good time is,” Porter
said. “Always process what you want to say. It is up
to them to be able to hear what you have to say.”
The next class is scheduled for August and is
open to active duty, civil service and contractor personnel. Family advocacy representatives
are also available to talk with units to improve
communication.

Program helps new Army moms
connect with other moms
By Rick Emert
CSMNG
No Army wife expects her life to be easy,
but becoming a new mother and facing a
deployment simultaneously can be more than
anyone could plan for.
With the current cycle of deployments, it’s
likely that many women will find themselves
in just that situation.
But, Fort Carson’s Army Community
Service offers a program that can help.
The New Parent Support Program’s Moms’
Support Net offers mothers a break from their
stressful schedules and introduces them to
other mothers who may be in the same boat,
said Afrah Caraballo, New Parent Support
Program home visitor and facilitator of the
Moms’ Support Net.
“The idea behind it is to give moms a place
to connect with other moms, have adult conversation and have a place that’s just theirs.
They can talk about what they’re going
through as a military mom, as a military
spouse, as a new mom – just all of the changes
that come with the status of now being a
mom,” said Caraballo, a licensed clinical
social worker. “We wanted something that
was just for moms to come and bounce ideas
off of each other, support each other and
just have that down time. They know for at
least an hour and a half a week, they have
something that is just theirs.”
The group meets every Monday from
10-11:30 a.m. The first and third Mondays
take place at ACS while the second and
third Mondays sessions are spent walking
at Ironhorse Park. Free child care is provided
with advance registration at ACS. The group
is open to any mother with a military identification card, Caraballo said.
The support group can be especially helpful to new mothers, whose lives change dramatically with the birth of their first child,
Caraballo said.
“Something happens once you get pregnant. You stop being you. You’re no longer
Jennifer; you’re no longer Sharon – you’re
the new mommy,” she said. “This is to help
moms reconnect with themselves and kind
of refuel, because they are constantly giving.
So, the idea of this program is to have a place
that, for an hour and a half a week, puts back
and refuels you.”
Many young mothers have moved away –
hundreds of miles away – from their parents
and siblings for the first time and their husbands might be deployed or about to deploy.
The Moms’ Support Net and New Parent
Support home visits can provide a substitute
for that family support, Caraballo said.
“It’s a voluntary program, and it’s just support,” she said. “It’s designed, actually, for
military Families who are displaced from
their natural support systems. That’s why

the program was created. A lot of times …
you’re in a new town – no family, no friends,
no relatives. If they do come (to visit), it’s a
short-time thing. So, the New Parent Support
home visitor is actually a person that’s designed to kind of help patch in those holes.
It’s not that they are bad moms and need a
home visitor; it’s not a scrutiny position. It’s
not our job to go in there and say, ‘You need
to do this, and you need to do that.’ It’s support and education and just someone to talk
to, someone who’s kind of like a big sister or
mom, but just fi lling in where that natural
support would have been.”

Creating Safe Havens for Child Visitation & Exchange
By Tracy Sellars
CASA of the Pikes Peak
Region
"Whether one has any
children or not, I believe
we all hold a duty to protect, nurture, and mentor children," said Major
Mayfield. "It is written
upon our hearts to do so. I volunteer for
CASA in an effort to fulfi ll that duty."
Major Matthew Mayfield is an 18 year veteran of the U.S. Army. He recently moved to
Colorado Springs and wanted to get involved
in the local community. He heard about the
SEPT program through friends, and was
inspired when he learned that there was a
specific need for more male volunteers.
The
Supervised
Exchange and Parenting
Time (SEPT) Program,
administered by Court
Appointed Special
Advocates (CASA) of
the Pikes Peak Region,
is a program designed to
provide a safe environment and to protect children from witnessing
conflict during the transfer from one parent
to another. Families are usually ordered into
the program by the court for reasons such as
unresolved conflict between parents, safety
concerns due to a history of family violence,
or a history of drug or alcohol abuse.
Major Mayfield is one of CASA’s 40+ active SEPT volunteers who are an amazing
“I believe we all hold a duty to protect,
nurture, and mentor children.”
— Major Matthew Mayfield
Major Mayfield says his volunteer work
makes a difference to children both directly
and indirectly. "I interact and talk with them,
trying to reinforce thoughts and behaviors
that are good for them — particularly from a
male perspective — as they are often lacking a
positive male figure in their lives. Indirectly,
I think having a strong male presence is
conducive to the feeling of a safe, secure
environment both for the visiting children
and the often anxious exchanging parent.
This makes the visits more relaxed and more
worthwhile."
force for good, providing safety and peace
of mind to children and families, but they
are stretched thin; additional volunteers are
badly needed.
The SEPT Program provides an opportunity
for concerned citizens to help kids in need
without the commitment of a large amount of
time. For more information about becoming a
SEPT volunteer, or to learn about all of CASA's
programs and volunteer opportunities, please

Program seeks to ease stress, life struggles
By Scott Prater
CSMNG
A young mother whose husband has
been deployed half a world away for more
than a year is trying to feed her two children while sorting through a stack of
unpaid bills when the phone rings. It’s
her second-grader’s school calling to
report that her child has been fighting
with classmates. Her infant is screaming. Her toddler’s breakfast just hit the
kitchen wall, and she is going to be late
for work again.
For many military families, this scenario isn’t hard to imagine, it’s reality.
Everyday stresses and pressure of daily
life are often compounded for military
members and their families and can
sometimes become too much to bear,
even to the point where one may think
a solution is impossible.
At Schriever Air Force Base, Airmen
and their family members do have a
place where they can find solutions. The
Military Family Life Consultant Program
is offered here at the Airman and Family
Readiness Center.
“Families dealing with child behavioral problems have become one of the
most common issues MFLCP counselors address,” said Community Readiness

stipulates that counselors rotate bases.
They are typically stationed in one location for 45-day intervals. This procedural feature accents the anonymity of
counseling. Clients don’t have to worry
about running into a counselor at the
Base Exchange, or on the street. And
from the DoD’s perspective, it provides
a ready cadre of professionals who can
surge into a location at any given time.
“Confidentiality is an important aspect
of the program,” Seckman said. “It’s most
popular, which is based on feedback from
clients, is that counselors don’t keep any
records. Clients can meet counselors
either in an office at the family readiness
center or any public place. The confidential nature of the program allows people
to receive support without fear of being
reported to the chain of command.”
That doesn’t mean MFLCP counselors
aren’t communicating with base leaders.
Counselors regularly meet with commanders to determine what the needs are
for units, then base their presentations
on those needs.
Counselors also provide presentations
about MFLCP through formal and informal meetings and can present on multiple topics, run educational groups and
attend meetings and events on base.

The program stresses short-term support and education, and is solution based,
though counselors can refer clients to
long-term counseling or therapy.
In operation since 2004, MFLCP
was launched as a pilot program after
the Department of Defense lengthened
Army deployments to Iraq from 12 to 15
months. Though it was originally focused
on Army members and their families,
the program became so successful that
it was expanded to include the Air Force
during 2007, and now covers all branches
of the military.
“There is now a MFLCP on every continental U.S. Air Force Base,” Seckman
said. “And just about every Air Force
base around the world includes this
program.”

The Military Family
By Anita Tedaldi
Gray hair is taking over my dark
brown head at a rapid pace.
It’s an invasion that I fight with all
my might, but one that is met with
large obstacles, such as the expense
of getting to a salon every six weeks
to keep the enemy at bay. I know, I
could color my hair at home, but
my inability to complete tasks that
require precision, rule out the dieyour-hair at home option.
I was prepared to go grey in my
thirties because all of my relatives
on my mother’s side of the family
went gray in their twenties, but I
believe that in my case genetics is
only partially the culprit, and that
gray hair has drastically increased
since my husband’s latest deployment, and since becoming a mom
of five. I guess I should be grateful
I actually have some hair left.
While I’ve read that there is no
scientific correlation between gray
hair and stress, I’m convinced that
a few days ago a large chunk of gray
hair grew on the right side of my
head, when I momentarily couldn’t
see my three year old daughter in
the pool, and was gripped by sheer
terror that she had drowned.
This past week, while still on our
pseudo-vacation, we went to the
base pool a few times. There were
two very friendly lifeguards who
helped me out with the kids on more
than one occasion. I felt we were
safe and had taken all precautions
because my three oldest daughters
are very good swimmers and I had
the perfect gear for my two youngest
ones, pink life-vests and matching
duck floaties.
But one afternoon, while in the
water with all of my kids, I had
to momentarily leave the pool to
change my one year old. I asked the
life guard to keep an eye on my three
year old daughter Livia, who was
glued to the side of the pool with her
floating gear and refused to move
even an inch.
It only took a couple of minutes to
change the baby, but when I turned
around Livia wasn’t there. I quickly
scanned the pool but didn’t see her,
so I looked for the life guard who
was also gone. Just as I was about to
panic, I saw a chubby pink shape and
a long slender figure with a red bathing suit near the candy machine.
Livia and the lifeguard had walked
to get a snack. The life guard told
me that Livia had informed her that
while I was changing the baby she
could become her best friend if she
got her a snack. The girl thought it
was funny and decided to get my
daughter a small treat.
I was so relieved nothing happened, but my hair carried the effects of this stress in the form of
the new patch of gray. Perhaps my
theory that deployments and mom
stress cause gray hair has some
validity.
My big test will be the Chicago
trip. If I get back with a full head
of white hair I’ll contact a medical journal to enroll in a study, or
maybe I’ll just die my hair platinum
blonde.
Moms
From page 4
It often takes several visits before a family learns to trust Caraballo and open up to
her, she said.
“Being a home visitor, it can take three or
four visits before you are really trusted. If you
say anything even resembling advice, they
think you are judging them,” Caraballo said.
“There is a lot of education that goes into
that, a lot of support around the deployment
cycle and educating the families about what
looks normal, what is normal, what could be
expected. Mostly it’s about developmental
type stuff for the children: this is normal if
he’s walking at this stage and if he’s eating
at this stage, don’t get too married to that
stage, because it’s going to change.”
Many of the mothers who attend the Moms
Support Group learned about it from the
home visits, she said.
The support group is an open forum facilitated by Caraballo for the mothers to
discuss anything, but most on their minds
is deployments, she said.
“They talk a lot about the cycle of deployment, the stress of being a mom and how it’s
hard to connect with the babies when they
are kind of preoccupied,” Caraballo said.
“So, we talk about different ways to react,
and they bounce ideas off of each other.
Deployments are the big thing, and what’s
interesting is … different moms are at different stages in the deployment cycle. They’re
able to share: ‘Well, I haven’t experienced
that,’ or, “I’ve been through that.’ So it ends
up being quite an amazing thing to listen to
and to come away with skills.

Support Net or to register, call 526-4590.

Military Families can ‘Cowboy up’ at Turkey Creek Ranch
By Nel Lampe
CSMNG
Family outings are still important,
even when everyone is cutting back on
spending.
A day at Turkey Creek Ranch allows families to have fun and relax together, and a few
gallons of gas will get you there.
Turkey Creek Ranch is one of Fort Carson’s
treasures and can be used by servicemembers
from other military installations as well as
Department of Defense identification card
holders.
The picturesque ranch is about nine miles
south of Fort Carson’s Gate 1, off Highway
115. Just a few miles from bustling traffic, the
scenery soon is more rural, with scattered
ranches and rolling hills. A brown sign reads
“Turkey Creek Recreation Area.” Turn left
and cross the cattle guard.
A gravel road lined by a white fence on
both sides leads to the barn area. Horses
graze in the pasture; it’s an idyllic setting.
Nearby are picnic tables, playgrounds,
horses and a mercantile store which serves
as the ranch’s office.
Open Wednesdays through Sundays, 8:30
a.m.-5:30 p.m., Turkey Creek Ranch is a nice
place to have a picnic, take a trail ride on
horseback, or put the youngsters in a saddle
for a pony ride.
Bring a picnic lunch to eat under a shade
tree. Take a walk, watch children play at
the Western town playground. Observe the
horses and just relax.
Activities are available at Turkey Creek
Ranch. A horse is saddled and waiting
for young riders between 11 a.m.-3 p.m.,
Wednesday-Sunday. For $4, children ages
2-9, and under 90 pounds, can sit in the
saddle while an adult leads the horse around
the ranch. Pay the fee at the mercantile and
choose a time.
Families can take a pony ride or picnic in the shade at Turkey Creek Ranch.
Pony rides may be arranged for special
events and unit gatherings.
Sign up for a trail horseback ride, available
Wednesdays-Sundays at 9 and 10:30 a.m.,
noon, 2 and 3:30 p.m. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends. A tral
ride is $20 for military, $28 for civilians.
Birthday parties can be held at Turkey
Creek Ranch. The party can include pony
rides.
How about a mini vacation overnight at
Turkey Creek Ranch? Camping sites are
available for tents at $5 per night. The recreation vehicle sites are $10. Reservations are
recommended. All camp sites are “primitive,”
without electricity and water. Toilet facilities
are nearby.
Grills or fire pits are at the site and there
are no fire restrictions at the present time.
Campers should bring their own equipment,
including cooking equipment.
Turkey Creek is ideal for unit picnics or
organization days, with several group picnic areas. Several picnic areas have covered
pavilions equipment.
Turkey Creek Ranch’s history dates to 1874.
There were several owners before the ranch
was acquired by the Army in the mid 1960s.
It’s now part of the Directorate of Family and
Morale, Welfare and Recreation.
To reach Turkey Creek Ranch, take
Highway 115 south of Fort Carson’s Gate 1
for about 10 miles. Take a left at the brown
sign for “Turkey Creek Ranch.”
