The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process in
which adults and children of catechetical age join the Catholic
Church. Please contact Deacon James M. Tormey, Sr., our
R.C.I.A. Coordinator, for details at 302-697-2049.
Parents wishing to present their children for Infant Baptism must
participate in an orientation session. Please call the parish office at
410-482-8939 for details.
Please contact Alicia Poppiti at 410-482-8939 about the preparation
of young people for Confirmation, or about children’s first reception
of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist.
Couples planning Matrimony meet with the Pastor or one of the
Deacons at least one year in advance of the wedding date they are
considering. Please call the parish office to arrange for this
meeting.
Pastoral Care of the Sick:
The Anointing of the Sick is
appropriate for anyone faced with hospitalization or a serious
challenge to health. When a hospital admission is planned, please
arrange to receive the Anointing here beforehand, if at all possible.
Our lay ministers to the sick bring Holy Communion to those
unable to come to Mass for any length of time. Please call the
parish office to arrange for these services.
Your Pastor, Deacons and parish staff members are always happy
to speak in confidence with anyone who senses a call to ordained
ministry or religious life.

Dear Parishioners,
Last year, I wrote a Pastor’s column for Mother’s
Day, so rather than reinventing the wheel (or dare I say be
a “Mother of Invention”), I think it would be a good
column to revisit for all of our wonderful mothers,
grandmothers, great-grandmothers, etc. And to any sons
or husbands out there who are reading this and forget that
it is Mother’s Day, there are still flowers and chocolates
available in the local Safeway that can be bought so that
you might not be smote. Anyway, here are my thoughts for
Mother’s Day:
Remember June Cleaver from TV’s “Leave It to
Beaver”? She was the mom of Theodore “Beaver”
Cleaver. Played by Barbara Billingsly, June Cleaver would
be seen weekly, serving breakfast to the family wearing
high heels and pearls. Remember Carol Brady from “The
Brady Bunch” – she took care of six kids, her house was
always spotless, and she never lost her temper. There was
Shirley Partridge played by Shirley Jones (on TV’s
“Partridge Family”) who not only travelled with her kids
when they were on concert tours, but sang and performed
with them on stage! Those kids are probably still in
therapy!
Anyway, I remember, when I was a kid, my mom
telling me how the way that TV portrays mothers was
ridiculous. She said it had to be comedy, because real life
was not that way. Thus, my mom never served breakfast
wearing heels and pearls (like June Cleaver), our house
wasn’t spotless and mom wasn’t without temper (like
Carol Brady), and praised be to God, she never performed
on concert tours with us (like Shirley Partridge).
But today is Mother’s Day when we honor the real
moms of the world for what they bring to our lives and our
world. Now, from a Catholic perspective, I’m not a fan of
Mother’s Day being in May – because in our faith we
celebrate Motherhood on January 1, with the feast of
Mary, Mother of God. However, without even an oar to
beat back the tide on this issue, I accept that this secular
celebration of motherhood in May is here to stay. And our
mothers are rightly honored, with well-wishes, gifts,
flowers and our prayers!
But, y’know there are many mothers that we
overlook. Namely, the mothers we hear of in the Bible.
Now, if I asked you to name a mother from the Bible, of
course everyone would name Mary, Mother of God. But,
can you name another? Well, let’s look at seven famous
mothers from the Bible. It’s time to step into the Wayback
Machine and set the dial for “the beginning.”
1. Eve. Eve, the wife of Adam, was the mother of
Cain, Abel, and Seth. Adam and Eve also “had other sons
and daughters” (Genesis 5:3-4). Now, while no mom is
perfect, Eve (along with Adam) set a really bad example
for their kids: she disobeyed God, and, together with
Adam, brought original sin to mankind. However, Eve did
serve a role in God’s plan even after the fall of man: By
populating the earth with her children, she faithfully
obeyed God's first command, “be fruitful and multiply.”
2. Hannah. Hannah prayed to God for a child
saying, “O Lord of hosts, if you look with pity on the
hardship of your servant, if you remember me and do not
forget me, if you give your handmaid a male child, I will
give him to the Lord all the days of his life.” And God did
bless her with a boy child. And faithful Hannah kept her
word and took Samuel to the temple and put him in the
care of the priests. Hannah’s faithfulness spilled onto
Samuel, and he went on to be a great prophet.
3. Rebekah. Rebekah was a mom with some great
and not-so-great qualities. On the great side, she married
and was faithful to Isaac, one of the great leaders of the
Jewish people, and raised twin boys: Jacob and Esau. She
was tenacious, and wanted what was best for her family.
On the Dr. Phil side of the equation, she favored one son
(Jacob) over the other (Esau); at one point even getting
Jacob to trick Esau out of his birthright, which caused
consternation between the brothers. This conflict raged for
a generation; as Dr. Phil might ask, “So, Rebekah, how’s
that favoritism thing working for you?” Eventually, Esau
made peace with Jacob (who became known as Israel), and
at her death, Rebekah was buried in the family tomb.
4. Jochebed. Jochebed was the mother of Moses,
and she was a brave woman! The Pharaoh of Egypt gave
the command that all male children born to the Hebrew
women living in Egpyt, be killed. Ignoring the Pharaoh, a
man named Amram, and his wife Jochebed, had a child
whom they named Moses. When she couldn’t protect
Moses any longer, she put him in a Papyrus basket and left
him in the reeds where he would be found. And he was…
by the Pharaoh’s daughter. And the rest is history!
Jochebed had two other children: Aaron and Miriam, who
also played an important role in the history of the Jewish
people and in salvation history. While the story of
Jochebed is told in the book of Exodus (Chapters 1-2), she
is not named in that book. The first time the Mother of
Moses has her name made known is in the Book of
Numbers, 26:59.
5. Deborah. This great mother of scripture wore
many hats. Deborah was a prophetess, a judge and a
mother. She prophesied and led a nation into a battle which
resulted in a 40- year peace. On the dark-side, she also
kills – in a brutal manner – one of the opponents of Israel
while he slept. In the Biblical text from Judges called “The
Song of Deborah” she identified as the “mother of Israel.”
I am sure Rebekah would disagree.
6. Elizabeth. Okay, now we jump into the New
Testament. Mary’s cousin Elizabeth, you may recall, was
expecting a child when Mary made her famous
“Visitation” (which we celebrate on May 31). The child
that Elizabeth would bear was John the Baptist, the final
and greatest prophet. He would be the one who would
prepare the way of the Lord, and make his presence
known. Elizabeth was old, and past her child bearing years,
but like so many of the women of the Bible, turned in
prayer to God and was blessed with a child. Of note, it was
angelically revealed that the child was to be named “John”
– but since Elizabeth’s husband, Zechariah, had expressed
doubt on this whole matter, he was struck mute. When he
finally conceded to naming the child “John” (and not
Zecchy, Jr., I guess), his voice was returned because of his
faithfulness. St. Elizabeth (for whom our Diocesan parish
in Wilmington is named) was a mother of great faith!
7. Sarah. The wife of Abraham was Sarah. It was
said that she was in her 90s when she found herself with
child. Now if this had happened in the late 1990s, the
National Enquirer might still be in business. Sarah had
prayed for a child, but with her and Abraham being so old,
the very thought was laughable. Ultimately, she gave birth
to Isaac, whose name means “he laughed.” Sarah’s faith
was great. So much so, that in Hebrews chapter 11, she is
included in the litany of the faithful people of the Old
Testament that are recounted.
And so, on this Mother’s Day we remember our
mothers, and we pray for them. In a special way, we also
pray to Mary, our mother, who gave all of us and our
mothers, the best maternal advice ever: she told us to look
to Jesus and to “do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5).

our church. On May 30 and 31st, we need volunteers who
can assist in serving food in the covered Grandstand at the
race. You can volunteer one or both days. The total time
commitment for each day is approximately 6-8 hours; the
time goes by quick and it’s a fun event. Best of all, you
will be out of the area prior to the race closing. You need
not be a member of the Knights. Any friends or family can

The painting of the church has been completed. The cost
of $2300.00 has been paid from your generous donations.
The basement of the church has been arranged through our
DRE to be painted during the down time from Religious
Education this summer. We are trying to coordinate this
with replacing the tiles in the floor of the church basement.
We are hoping to be able to complete this job with the
money that was not spent on the painting project. Thank
you to all who were so very caring and generous to this
task.
Annual appeal: The goal set for Immaculate
Conception Parish is the same as last year, $21,000. Last
weekend our pledges made were $14,824.00 Please fill

Queridos Feligreses,
El año pasado, escribí una columna del Pastor, para el Día de las Madres, por lo que en lugar de reinventar la rueda (o
me atrevería a decir una " Madre de la invención " ) , creo que sería una buena columna para volver a visitar para todas
nuestras madres maravillosas, abuelas , bisabuelas , etc. Y a cualquier hijos o maridos por ahí que están leyendo esto y
se olvidan de que es el Día de la Madr , todavía hay flores y chocolates disponibles en el Safeway local que se pueden
comprar de manera que se lastimen los sentimientos . De todas maneras, aquí están mis pensamientos para el Día de
la Madre:
Recuerda June Cleaver del programa de TV en Ingles llamado "Déjalo a Cleaver" June Cleaver era la madre de
Teodora Cleaver”. Interpretado por Bárbara Billingsly, June Cleaver semanalmente, servía el desayuno a la familia con
tacones, bien vestida con perlas. Algunos recordaran a Carol Brady del programa de televisión "The Brady Bunch" –
tenía seis hijos, y su casa siempre estaba impecable, y nunca perdió su temperamento. También estaba Shirley
Partridge interpretado por Shirley Jones (en el programa de TV "Partridge Family") que no sólo viajó con sus hijos
cuando estaban en giras de conciertos, pero cantó y actuó con ellos en el escenario! Esos niños probablemente aún
están en terapia!
De todos modos, recuerdo cuando yo era un niño, mi mamá me decía que no estaba correcto en la forma cómo
ponían la imagen de las madres en la TV que era ridículo. Ella dijo que tenía que ser comedia, porque en la vida real no
era así. Por lo tanto, mi mamá nunca sirvió desayuno usando tacones y perlas (como Junio Cleaver), nuestra casa no
estaba impecable y mamá se enojaba y tenía su genio (no como Carol Brady) y bendito sea Dios, nunca actuó en las
giras de conciertos con nosotros (como Shirley Partridge).
Pero hoy es el día de las madres cuando rendimos homenaje a las madres reales del mundo por todo lo que traen a
nuestras vidas y a nuestro mundo. Ahora, desde una perspectiva Católica, no soy un fanático de que el día de Las
Madres sea en mayo – porque en nuestra fe celebramos la maternidad el 1 de enero con la fiesta de María, madre de
Dios. Sin embargo, sin ni siquiera un remo para derrotar la marea sobre esta cuestión, solo aceptar que esta
celebración secular de la maternidad en mayo está aquí para quedarse. Y nuestras madres son justamente honradas,
con buenos deseos, regalos, flores y nuestras oraciones!
Pero, sé que hay muchas madres que pasamos por alto. Mientras que muchos de nosotros podemos agasajar a las
madres que conocemos en la vida real, las madres que conocemos por la televisión y las madres que conocemos por
las películas, los medios de comunicación y las canciones, pero hay otras madres que son olvidadas. Es decir, las
madres que oímos en la Biblia. Ahora, si te pidiera que, nombraras una madre de la Biblia, por supuesto todos
nombrarían a María, madre de nuestro Señor y Salvador, Jesucristo. Pero, ¿puede usted nombrar otra? Bueno, vamos
a tomar la columna de este Pastor a ver siete madres famosas de la Biblia. Es hora de entrar en la Máquina del
Recuerdo y ajuste el dial desde "el principio".
1. Eva. Eva, la esposa de Adán, era la madre de Caín, Abel y Set. Adán y Eva también "tuvieron otros hijos e hijas"
(Génesis 5,3-4). Ahora, mientras que no hay ninguna mamá perfecta, Eva (junto con Adán ) dan un mal ejemplo para
sus hijos: desobedecieron a Dios y, junto con Adán, trajo el pecado original a la humanidad. Sin embargo, Eva hizo el

que se dedique a servirte a Ti en la Casa de oración”. Y al año Dios le dio a Ana su primer hijo, al cual le puso por
nombre Samuel, y Ana cumplió su palabra y cuando el niño estaba grandecito, lo llevó a la Casa de oración y lo puso al
cuidado de los sacerdotes y se lo ofreció a Dios para que se dedicara para siempre a servir junto al altar. Se convirtió en
un gran profeta.
3. Rebeca. Rebeca era una madre con algunas grandes cualidades y otras no tan grandes. En la parte grande, se casó
con Isaac y le fue fiel, uno de los grandes líderes del pueblo judío y crio niños gemelos: Jacob y Esaú. Ella era tenaz y
quería lo mejor para su familia. En el lado de la ecuación de Dr. Phil, favoreció a un hijo (Jacob) sobre el otro (Esaú); en
un momento dado incluso quería que Jacob engañara a Esaú de su primogenitura, que causó consternación entre los
hermanos. Este conflicto hizo estragos durante una generación; como el Dr. Phil podría preguntar, "Entonces, Rebeca,
¿cómo funciona eso del favoritismo para ti?" Eventualmente, Esaú hizo las paces con Jacob (quien llegó a ser conocido

6. Isabel. Bueno, ahora saltamos al Nuevo Testamento. Prima de María, Isabel, recordarán, estaba esperando un hijo
cuando María hizo su famosa "visita" (que se celebra el 31 de mayo). El niño que Isabel llevaba en sus entrañas era
Juan el Bautista, el último Profeta y el más grande. Él sería el único que podría preparar el camino del Señor y hacer
sentir su presencia. Isabel era mayor y pasada la edad de concebir un hijo , pero como muchas de las mujeres de la
Biblia, se dedicó a la oración a Dios y fue bendecida con un niño. Una nota, angélicamente se reveló que el niño debía
ser llamado "Juan" – pero puesto que el esposo de Isabel, Zacarías, había expresado dudas sobre este asunto, fue
golpeado mudo. Cuando finalmente accedió a nombrar al niño "Juan" (y supongo que no Zacarías, Jr.), su habla le fue
devuelto a causa de su fidelidad. Santa Isabel (La cual se denomina nuestra parroquia diocesana en Wilmington) era
una madre de una gran fe!
7. Sara. La esposa de Abraham era Sara. Se decía que estaba en sus 90 cuando se encontró con niño. Ahora si esto
hubiera ocurrido en la década de 1990, el National Enquirer podría seguir en el negocio. Sara había orado por un niño,
pero como ella y Abraham eran tan mayores, el solo pensar en eso era un chiste. En última instancia, dio a luz a Isaac,
cuyo nombre significa "reír". La fe de Sara era grande; tanto así, que en Hebreos capítulo 11, está incluida en la letanía
de los fieles del Antiguo Testamento son recontados.
En este día de la madre recordamos a nuestras madres, y rezamos por ellas. De manera especial, también rezamos a
nuestra Santísima madre María, quien más allá de estas madres de las sagradas escrituras, ella es el modelo perfecto
de la maternidad a quien deben mirar todas las madres, pasado, presente y futuro. María, nuestra madre, nos dio a
todos nosotros y a todas nuestras madres, el mejor consejo materno: nos dijo que encontremos a Jesús y que
"hagamos lo que él nos diga" (Juan 2:5). Feliz día de las madres!
