of tourism academicians. It was formed in 2002 by group of leading tourism and hospitality
academicians with the purpose to enhance the standard of teaching and research, further to
promote its orderly growth and development needed to cater tourism industry.
Lyceum of the Philippines University
Lyceum of the Philippines University prides itself with its long and rich tradition of Academic
Excellence through the legacy of its founder, Dr. Jose P. Laurel, who became the third president of
the Philippines. He named the institution after lykeion, the grove in ancient Athens where
Aristotle taught his pupils. LPU is the only university founded by President of the republic. Its
educational vision is founded on principles Dr. José P. Laurel set down. It opened its gates to its first
students on July 7, 1952.
INTRODUCING THE CONFERENCE THEME
“Tourism- Improves the working capacity of communities and promotes individual as well as
collective well-being.” - Manila Declaration on world Tourism, Manila, Philippines (October
1980)
Asia and the Pacific continues to be a dynamic economic force in the region with the annual
GDP averaging 5% that has had consequent repercussions on tourism. The latest estimated
UNWTO figures show international tourist arrivals to be around 1.14 million in 2014 of which
the Asia/Pacifc share is 263 million. While the global trends amounted to 4.7% increase, Asia
and the Pacific grew by 5% and is expected to maintain its steady growth into the coming years.
In the long-term, Asia and the Pacific remains a vital driving force of global inbound and
outbound travel. Asia and the Pacific arrivals are projected to increase from the 263 million
(2014) to 535 million in 2030 improving on its current market share from 23 to 30%. A rising
middleclass with more income at its disposal, greater leisure time through social progress and
quick adaptation to innovative technological changes, have been the main contributory factors
to the growth in tourism. The success of inbound and outbound tourism in Asia and the Pacific
is also confirmed by the growth in international 2014: A Year in Retrospect Message from
Regional Director, Mr. Xu Jing Issue 38│March 2015 5 tourism receipts. The region earned USD
359 billion in receipts in 2013 or 31% of the world’s total – a share that has almost doubled
since 2000 when it was just 18%. The region’s top earners were China and Macao SAR both
recording increases of 10% and 7% respectively in 2014. This futuristic growth is expected to
govern by some serious changes in the travel pattern, specifically the technological changes.
Just to quote after the call of Indian prime minister to share photographs on Indian travel on
the #IncredibleIndia twitter, within minutes thousands of people shared their pics. This incident
clearly signifies the futuristic changes occurring in the society. The current conference will
expect technology to act as mitigating strategy in overcoming the challenges of tourism
development.
