SPORTS GUIDELINES AND DEFINITIONS
YEAR 7 - 2015 SEASON
SUMMER SPORTS
Fixtures commence Saturday 31 January 2015 (TERM 1)
BASKETBALL
Basketball teams are graded A–G and boys play against other AAGPS schools every Saturday.
Boys will be required to purchase a Newington branded basketball uniform from the Uniform Shop.

CRICKET
Cricket teams are graded A–E and boys play against other AAGPS schools every Saturday. Boys will
be required to purchase a white Newington branded cricket shirt and long white trousers, from the
Uniform shop. A Newington cap or white sun hat is compulsory. Playing equipment is provided by the
College or boys may choose to use their own.

ROWING
As rowing is a new sport to most boys entering Year 7; training will incorporate learning the skills of rowing
and working on fitness.
Trials will be held on Saturday 31 January 2015 (tentatively from 1pm – 3:30pm) at the Newington
Boatshed.
Boys should NOT purchase their rowing suit and hat until they have been selected into the squad.
Squad training will commence at the Newington Boatshed on Saturday 7 February 2015.
Boys will train in the College Gym on Thursday afternoons within the timetable from 1:25pm–3:20pm and
on Friday afternoons from 3:20pm–4:45pm. On Saturdays, boys will train on the water at the Newington
Boatshed (Abbotsford). Boys are required to wear a Newington rowing suit, white Newington cap and
Newington rugby socks to row in, all items can be purchased at the Uniform Shop.

TENNIS - SUMMER
Tennis teams are graded A–D and boys play against other AAGPS schools every Saturday. Boys can wear
their Newington PE Shirt and black shorts to training. A white Newington cap is also required.

Squad of 20 - 25 boys for AAGPS Competition
CLUB TENNIS
Boys not selected in graded teams will play internal games every Saturday and may be given the
opportunity to play fixtures throughout the season. No previous experience required.

WATER POLO
Boys selected will play against other AAGPS/CAS schools every Saturday. The selection criteria for Water
Polo require boys to be strong swimmers and have ideally played at Club level.

AAGPS ATHLETICS & SWIMMING
ATHLETICS (SEEKING EXPRESSION OF INTEREST)
Year 7 is encouraged to participate and trial for the Junior Athletics Team (U13s and U14s). There
is a full range of track and field events for the boys to choose from. The boys compete against the other
AAGPS schools in a series of invitational meets, culminating in the AAGPS Athletics Carnival at Homebush.
No previous experience is required for this sport. Boys will require a Newington College Athletics singlet,
which can be purchased from the Uniform shop.
The Athletics season starts on Monday 16 March 2015

SWIMMING (SEEKING EXPRESSION OF INTEREST)
Boys are selected to compete in a series of AAGPS events in Term 1. During this time, boys compete in
carnivals on Friday nights from 7:00pm–9:00pm. Students must wear Newington swimmers which can
be purchased from the Uniform shop. Team members will be given a Newington swimming cap.
Only boys who have been selected in the Newington team can swim at these carnivals.
Trials for team selection will be held when school starts next year. The Newington Age Championships will
be held on Friday 6 February 2015 at 3.30pm and this will be a trial for team selection.
The AAGPS Swimming season starts on Friday 13 February 2015.

WINTER SPORTS
Fixtures commence Saturday 28 March 2015 (TERMS 2 & 3)
CROSS COUNTRY
Boys compete against other AAGPS and CAS schools every Saturday.
Boys will require a Newington Cross Country uniform, which can be purchased from the Uniform shop.

FENCING
Boys compete against other Fencing schools every Saturday.
Boys are required to wear PE tracksuit pants during competition as well as a Newington PE shirt.

FOOTBALL

Rugby teams are graded A–H, and boys play against other AAGPS schools every Saturday. Training
for higher teams will involve an after school session.
Boys will require a Newington Rugby uniform which can be purchased from the Uniform shop. No
previous experience required for this sport.

TENNIS CLUB - WINTER
Boys CANNOT choose to play winter tennis if they have played Tennis in summer. Winter tennis is not
graded; however players will play internal games every Saturday and may be given the opportunity to
play fixtures throughout the season. No previous experience required.
