SPORTS GUIDELINES AND DEFINITIONS
FOR 2015 SEASON
YEARS 8 – 12
SUMMER SPORTS - (TERMS 1 & 4)
Fixtures commence Saturday 31 January 2015
Boys are expected to train according to their chosen sport’s timetable and participate in Saturday sport.
BASKETBALL
Basketball teams are graded A–G and boys play against other AAGPS schools every Saturday. Boys will be required
to purchase a Newington branded basketball uniform from the Uniform Shop.

CRICKET
Cricket teams are graded A–E and boys play against other AAGPS s chools e v e r y Saturday. Boys will be required
to purchase a white Newington branded cricket shirt and long white trousers, from the Uniform shop. A Newington
cap or white sun hat is compulsory. Some playing equipment is provided by the College or boys may choose to use
their own.

NEW FIT (PARTICIPATION LEVY APPLIES)
New Fit is available to students in Years 9–12. Boys are taken through challenging workouts that utilize both
resistance training (bodyweight/and equipment) and cardiovascular options to challenge their metabolic pathways and
thus increase their physical capacities. This activity is located off-site and there is a participation levy. Application is
made to the Head of Co-Curricular and must be approved by the student’s Head of House. Boys wear their PE uniform
for this activity.

ROWING (LEVY OF $110 APPLIES)
The rowing season begins in Term 4 and culminates with the Head of the River in Term 1 of the following year.
Boys entering the College at the beginning of Term 1 will be offered an introductory program to the sport that will entail
some water work as well as technical guidance on the rowing machines.
Times for the sessions will be governed by the number of boys wishing to take up the opportunity.
Boys should not purchase their rowing suit and hat until notified by Mr Partridge.

TABLE TENNIS
Although not an official GPS Sport it is the aim to grow the sport so as to encompass and encourage competition between
schools allowing for the boys to develop skills in a lifetime sport. Boys wear their PE uniform.

TENNIS - SUMMER
Tennis teams are graded A–D and boys play against other AAGPS schools every Saturday. Boys can wear their
Newington PE shirt and black shorts to training. A white Newington cap is also required.
CLUB TENNIS
Boys not selected in graded teams will play internal games every Saturday and may be given the opportunity to play
fixtures throughout the season. No previous experience required.

WATER POLO
Boys selected will play against other AAGPS/CAS schools every Saturday. The selection criteria for Water Polo
require boys to be strong swimmers and have ideally played at Club level.

AAGPS ATHLETICS & SWIMMING - (TERMS 1 & 2)
ATHLETICS (SEEKING EXPRESSION OF INTEREST)
Students are encouraged to participate and trial for the Athletics Team. There is a full range of track and field
events for the boys to choose from. The boys compete against the other AAGPS schools in a series of invitational
meets, culminating in the AAGPS Athletics Carnival at Homebush. No previous experience is required for this sport.
Boys will require a Newington College Athletics singlet, which can be purchased from the Uniform shop.
The Athletics season starts on Monday 16 March 2015

SWIMMING (SEEKING EXPRESSION OF INTEREST)
Boys are selected to compete in a series of AAGPS events in Term 1. During this time, boys compete in carnivals on
Friday nights from 7:00pm–9:00pm. Students must wear Newington swimmers which can be purchased from the
Uniform shop. Team members will be given a Newington swim cap.
Only boys who have been selected in the Newington team can swim at these carnivals.
Trials for team selection will be held when school starts next year (times to be notified). The Newington Age
Championships will be held on Friday 6 February 2015 at 3.30pm and this will be the final trial for team selection.
The AAGPS Swimming Season starts on Friday 13 February 2015.
There is no carnival on Friday 6 March 2015 as the Head of the River is the following day.

WINTER SPORTS - (TERMS 2 & 3)

Boys are expected to train according to their chosen sport’s timetable and participate in Saturday sport.
BADMINTON
Badminton is available to students from Years 9–12. Boys are required to have or purchase a racquet and wear
their PE uniform with indoor non marking court shoes.

CROSS COUNTRY
Boys compete against other AAGPS and CAS schools every Saturday. Boys will require a Newington Cross Country
uniform, which can be purchased from the Uniform shop.

FENCING
Boys compete on Saturdays. Boys are required to wear PE tracksuit pants during competition as well as a
Newington PE shirt.

graded teams will be placed in a development squad and play internal games every Saturday. They may also be
given the opportunity to play fixtures throughout the season. Boys will require a Newington Football uniform,
which can be purchased from the Uniform shop. No previous experience required for this sport.

Rifle Shooting is available to students in Years 9 – 12. Please email Mr Pike if you are interested in participating in
this activity. Boys wear their PE uniform.

RUGBY
Rugby teams are graded A–H, and boys play against other AAGPS schools every Saturday.
Boys will require a Newington Rugby uniform which can be purchased from the Uniform shop. No previous

TENNIS – CLUB
Boys cannot choose to play winter tennis if they have played Tennis in summer. Winter tennis is not graded;
however players will play internal games every Saturday and may be given the opportunity to play fixtures
throughout the season. No previous experience required.

Volleyball
Volleyball is available to students in Years 10-12. Opens teams consist of Years 11 & 12 students; a separate
U16s team is comprised of Year 10s. No previous experience is required.
