Dance School
London Contemporary Dance School has been
preparing young artists for a physically rigorous and
highly creative profession for over 45 years. The school
ensures that its students are versed in the skills and
knowledge that will enable them to achieve success
within the professional dance industry, in whatever
shape that may take in the future. An education at
London Contemporary Dance School is grounded in
a culture that celebrates the young emergent artistic
voice, which gives it space, acknowledgment and
above all works to develop its uniqueness.

Ben is Artistic Director and co-founder of Lost Dog. He trained at Guildford
School of Acting, London Contemporary Dance School and has a first class
degree in English Literature from Newcastle University. His work explores
the overlap and transition between Dance and Theatre.
Lost Dog’s most recent work Paradise Lost (lies unopened beside me) won
the National Dance Award for Outstanding Male Performance and has been
nominated for a Sky Arts South Bank award. In 2011, Lost Dog won The Place
Prize for Dance sponsored by Bloomberg with their duet It Needs Horses.
Not that awards are all that matter... there have been works that haven’t
won any awards that Ben is still very proud of (and some that he isn’t).
Ben has also created work for Barely Methodical Troupe, Scottish Dance
Theatre, Dance Umbrella and Phoenix Dance Theatre. Ben is a Work
Place artist.

Ben McEwen is a dancer. He graduated from Trinity Laban before going
on to complete the training cycle at PARTS. He now regularly works as a
performer and researcher for Vera Tussing, and is currently working with
Francesco Scavetta/Wee. He has appeared in works by Hagit Yakira, Leila
McMillan, Nicola Conibere and others, almost always wearing a blue t-shirt
as costume, and was in the BBC documentary Dance Rebels: A Story of
Modern Dance, (though he doesn’t consider himself much of a rebel).
He also enjoys aikido, hiking, barefoot running and tea.
Vera Tussing graduated from London Contemporary Dance School and
has worked as a choreographer, creator and dancer throughout Belgium,
the UK and Europe. A central theme of Vera’s work is how the different
senses combine to structure our perception and the creation of unique,
inter-personal encounters between audience, performer and performance.
She is currently setting up a new creation under the title of Mazing that will
premiere in October 2016 at STUK, Leuven (Belgium). Vera is a Work Place
Artist at The Place.

Company. Her first full-length work Carmen was created for Northern Ballet
Theatre and has been re-staged for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal,
The Royal New Zealand Ballet and the Lithuanian National Ballet.
Didy recently started her own Company Umanoove and her first independent
production The Happiness Project will tour the UK, with a London premiere at
The Place in May 2017. She was recently awarded a Dance East choreographic

Music: Valse En Exil by Thomas Dutronc
The silence between the tracks of music I was listening
to while running allowed me to be more aware of the
environment I was surrounded by. In a way the loud
music in my ears was highlighting these few seconds of
silence during which I really could perceive the sound of
the train or a bird singing or even someone snoring.

No. 4 in E minor by Eugène Ysaÿe. Performed by Ilya Kaler
A piece inspired by Eugène-Auguste Ysaÿe’s violin solo,
Sonata No 4 (part of a collection of 6)
Time and time again we have been needlessly plunging
into the depths of uncertainty
Of forgetting the prologue and being apprehensive
of the epilogue
But like a long line that is infinite in nature,
I say that the present is only that slight palpitation
upon it.
Transitory and thus inconsequential.
And on this journey let us take time to smell the
flowers along the way.

Chapter 1: The Story Takes Place in the Wreckage
The Esther family return to their battlefield of faded
glory. They are ready to make their peace but the past
still controls them. “Don’t look in the gushing sink,”
they said. Their memories lodged in their self-image
like BB pellets stuck in their hands.

Fund for Excellence
London Contemporary Dance School encourages applications from
talented students regardless of their background or financial circumstances.
For this reason we created the Fund for Excellence, which distributes grants
to students in need of additional financial support. These awards make a real
difference to those who might otherwise not have the resources necessary
to complete their training. The need for the Fund is greater than ever and we
rely solely upon generous contributions from trusts and individuals to help our
students through their training. Whether you are watching the performance
today as a parent, friend, former student or dance enthusiast, with your help
we can continue to support those students who are struggling to focus on
their studies.
If you would like to make a gift to the Fund please call
The Place’s Development Department on 020 7121 1054,
email [email protected] or visit theplace.org.uk/development
If you are a UK taxpayer then you can Gift Aid your donation to us.
Gift Aid allows us to reclaim an extra 25p in tax from the Inland Revenue
for every £1 you give at no additional cost to you.

Alumni Network
Since 1969 London Contemporary Dance School has seen almost 3,000
students push the boundaries of contemporary dance in its studios. Many have
gone on to found their own companies, become directors of internationally
recognised dance organisations and have been acknowledged as outstanding
performers. The success of our former students has made the School one of
the world’s leading conservatoires.
This year’s graduating students join this network of distinguished dance
professionals who continue to shape the future of dance across the globe
and we hope that the School and our growing alumni community will continue
to be a source of inspiration to them throughout their career. For this reason,
we established the Alumni Network which allows former students to keep up
to date with developments at the School and access alumni services and
benefits. We are extremely thankful to those alumni who continue to make
a substantial contribution to the current student experience by offering
workshops, placements and by kindly supporting the Fund for Excellence.
Our alumni are part of the School’s history and future and we hope that
this year’s graduates continue to keep in touch with us through the Alumni
Network, which they will join upon graduation this autumn.
