First Street Principal Message: Jason Knott As we conclude the 2014-15 school year, I would like to share news with you about exciting things happening at JC McKenna over the next few months. Over spring break, the first group of new interactive SMART Projectors were installed in several classrooms at the middle school. The next group will be done in June, and the final allocation will be done following the 15-16 school year. These projectors allow for a more interactive learning experience for both the staff and our students, and are already being integrated into lessons! In June, an upgrade of the wireless infrastructure throughout the District will take place. This will allow for increased connectivity and reliability for our technology. We will also be upgrading our computer network as part of the District Technology Plan. By September when students return, we will be utilizing our new technology throughout the building! Work has begun on turning the Liberty Street Lot procured by the District into an outdoor classroom. The lot is being cleared and graded by staff and students, and will eventually be landscaped with native plants, trees, and bushes. A little Free Library, reading nooks, benches, tables, and paths will encompass the area, which will be open to our staff and students, as well as the community! Finally, significant upgrades to the baseball diamond are under way and consist of leveling the field, moving and upgrading the backstop, and adding fences and benches. You can follow the progress of the outdoor classroom and baseball diamond on our JC McKenna Middle School page on Facebook. It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the principal of JC McKenna Middle School! As part of the referendum, JC McKenna and other schools in the District will be undergoing significant security upgrades over the next several months. Security cameras will be placed in locations both inside and outside the school, along with auto FOB-operated door locking mechanisms on external entrances. Those entering the main office at Door 15 will be required to buzz in before entering the school, which will allow us to better monitor those entering the premises. All of these upgrades are taking place in order to make our schools a more safe and monitored learning environment for students and staff. All of these upgrades will be active for the beginning of the 2015-16 school year. If you have any questions about our upcoming security upgrades at JC McKenna, please feel free to contact Mr. Knott at [email protected] or 882-3302 Page 2 JC McKenna Middle School Counselor’s Corner By Sarah Traut (School Counselor) and Mike Czerwonka (School Social Worker) Summertime issues and ideas: Summer Slide, Summer Loss or Summer Setback are all terms that refer to the knowledge and skills students can lose over the summer if they are not engaged in some learning. Research shows that many students experience learning loss when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer. Further, they score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of summer vacation (Cooper, 1996). Approximately 2 months of instructional time is lost at the beginning of a school-year addressing the knowledge and skills lost during the summer slide. That translates into about 22% of the new school year spent re-teaching skills lost over the summer. This trend is particularly noticeable in reading. One way to slow this loss is to encourage children to read over the summer. This does not have to mean taking a week to read War and Peace, but simply having children spend 20 minutes reading some books each day. Using tools like www.Lexile.com to help find books in a child’s Lexile range can help build skills, as can finding books that your son or daughter has a personal interest in. The Eager Free Public Library has many books on their shelves or that they can get. Additionally there are many Little Libraries cropping up in and around town that have books available. Children can also use websites like Kahn Academy and many other math based sites to practice math skills as well. Social Media Use—while the term social media is pretty vague in and of itself the general idea behind it is interacting with others in an online setting (this can be facebook, Instagram, snapchat, twitter, kik and many others). There has been much research on how the use of social media affects young and developing students. One finding indicates higher narcissistic tendencies among teens while other data indicate concerns related to “meanness” 69% of social media-using teens think that peers are mostly kind to each other on social networking sites, however, 88% of teens have seen someone be mean or cruel to another person on a social networking site. (Pew Research Center, FOSI, Cable in the Classroom, 2011) 12% of teens say they witnessed cruel behavior "frequently" on social networking sites. (Pew Research Center, FOSI, Cable in the Classroom, 2011) 15% of social media-using teens say they have been the target of online meanness. (Pew Research Center, FOSI, Cable in the Classroom, 2011ial) While it’s important to give teens some freedom of choice, they still need a set of guidelines and a few rules. Limit the amount of time on television and computer, plus the amount of data allowed on their cell phones. Explain to your child the idea of a digital footprint and how it their postings today may have long-term repercussions they can’t see at this time. Setting limits and guidelines for your expectations with social media and summertime is valuable so they learn to use social media responsibility and find some balance between their online lives and their real lives. Page 3 6th Grade Team JC McKenna Middle School Grades are posted online. Please use Family Access to find your child’s grades. It takes about 1 week turn around time for teachers to post grades. If you have not signed-up for Family Access please contact Linda Gard at the District Office. Civil War Day is May 15, 2015. Details to follow in an email and handout. Everyone is gearing up for Civil War Day on May 15th, when the whole group will take busses over to Milton. Page 4 Language Arts Civil Rights is the theme of our final novel unit, and students are already into their second week of reading, discussing, analyzing, writing responses to, and providing evidence related to their respective book choices. Groups have been placed into bus “Teams” that work together answering civil rights questions, gathering or reviewing vocabulary words, and making sure each member has done his/her homework to earn sticker points that can be redeemed for JC McKenna Middle School red tickets. (These come in handy to purchase pencils or provide other privileges-such as admission to endof-the-year PBIS day events.) Students should be reading their books and/or writing in their “scrapbook/ journals” each night for the next few weeks. Sixth graders are also writing a children’s story based on one of the many themes we’ve studied this year. These include Civil War, Immigration, and Civil Rights related historical fiction; or even a Mystery or Animal-related theme. Students will include in their books a brief synopsis of their story, a title and dedication page, and finally, a short autobiography of themselves. It has been a tradition to share these creative works of art with second graders at Levi-Leonard later this spring. We will continue to develop our reading/ writing skills using a variety of lessons and activities from some new Common Core Performance Coach guides we recently purchased. Verb tenses, word parts, and pronouns are a few other areas we plan to work on. Math During April regular math classes completed Chapter 11 in Go Math which was the study of surface area and volume. The class also brushed up on area of circles and circumference. In Chapter 12 and 13 students will be working with data. Ask your child if they have done any extra credit for Term 4. Term 4 grades have been a little under par compared to the other terms. Hang in there!!! Advanced class students are working through Stretching and Shrinking. This is the study of similarity. Students have used scale factor and ratios to find missing parts of shapes and to identify if those shapes are similar. In this unit students will conduct experiments to find the experimental probability and analyze the outcomes to find the theoretical probability. We will look at one stage and two stage events. Composition/Literature We are currently in the middle of our medieval unit. Students have selected one of six medieval books to read. They each have a calendar with reading assignments through the beginning of May. The writing that we will be working on is also connected to this interdisciplinary medieval unit. Students will write poems in a variety of styles on a medieval topic of their choice. They will then do an illuminated letter and some scroll work on their poem. This poem, along with all of their other writing, will be included in their individual books of writing. Look for these books of writing to come home at the end of the school year. We will finish the year by reading one final book, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Science We will be studying the Nervous System with emphasis on the brain. Also, all students should be working on their science projects—interviewing their scientist and creating a Google Presentation. Their first due date to show that work is being done occurs on April 29th. The actual project is due May 15th. Spanish [email protected] Students in seventh grade Spanish will finish out the year reading the novel The Circuit: Stories of the Life of a Migrant Child by Francisco Jimenez. They will also be completing the food unit. In class we are working on a speaking project called HABLO which reviews the Spanish they have learned over the course of the year. They will also be completing a writing assignment about themselves in Spanish called Mi Vida. Your child should have brought home a letter about the point system that will be used to determine which students are eligible for the trip. Thank you for helping make our Museum of Ancient Civilizations possible! Your support for your child resulted in an awesome display of talent. I hope you had the opportunity to stop up and see all the wonderful projects, and learned interesting facts from their museum labels. Seventh Graders have just completed their unit on Ancient Greece and will finish the year learning about Ancient Rome and Medieval Times. As part of our integrated unit on the Middle Ages, we will be holding our annual Medieval Day on Wednesday, May 27th. Watch for details coming soon through Family Access. 7th Grade Art Students are creating a fantasy room using 1 point perspective. They will be adding color and shading to their finished drawing. I want to remind parents that June 3 will be the last day of their 12 week 7th grade art class so students will need to have all work turned in by then. I will be updating their progress over the next few weeks as they complete work and you can monitor your child’s progress by logging into skyward. All late work must be turned in by May 29th. If you have any questions, please let me know. Page 12 JC McKenna Middle School 8th Grade Team Composition/Literature Students in 8th grade Comp/Lit just finished their final novel unit on classic utopian and dystopian societies. Students work with tone, mood, conflict, and symbolism when reading their novel Students are now practicing skills in figurative language and looking at short stories. Mrs. Katelyn Demrow 882-3351 Science [email protected] We will finish out the year by exploring the Earth History timeline - a wonderfully interesting unit that allows students to grasp the remarkable fact that our planet is over 4 billion years old and has undergone some amazing transformations both chemically (geologically), and biologically. Mr. Rich Fanning 882-3358 Spanish 8th graders will be working in groups for the last 3 weeks of the year in Spanish and Comp/Lit classes. This small group project is called Voices in Action. Students select a topic that they want to learn more about and will teach the class about their findings. World Geography Composition/Literature Science [email protected] Ms. Kelly Fanta 882-3350 Spanish [email protected] Mr. John Hanson 882-3340 Students in World Geo 8 will be closing the year with a unit on Asia and all of its diversity along with lessons on Australia and year-end review activities. The last and large project for the quarter will have many options for students to pick from. Be on the lookout for this in May. Social Studies [email protected] Also, implore to students to finish the year strong! Mrs. Gretchen Kopf 882-3343 Math 8 Math We end the year with exponential relationships. We look at how we can represent both exponential growth (like bacteria) and exponential decay (like depreciation) with graphs, tables and equations. We will also be looking at rules for exponents. Algebra [email protected] Mrs. Deborah Herbers 882-3306 FACE We end the year with quadratics and radicals. We’ll be graphing, solving and interpreting quadratic [email protected] tions. We’ll be simplifying radical expressions (with square roots) and solving and graphing radical equations. Mr. Pat Dietrich -3314 FACE Special Education 8th grade students are almost at the end of their housing unit. It is heartening to hear them say, “ I can’t afford this house”, “what do you mean I have to pay $8,000 for a third bath?”—hopefully they are understanding what it takes for their parents to provide a decent place to live and are more appreciative of your efforts on that front. [email protected] We will end the trimester in the foods and nutrition area. Please encourage your young person to be independently cooking for themselves and your family. They all know that clean-up goes along with the process. Encourage their efforts and attempts. Then send me a note so they can get extra credit for being independent cooks. Thank you for the chance to have your young adult in my class for the last three years. I wish them all things good in the future at EHS.
