Workshop on Acting Judges The Johannesburg Society of
14 May 2015 NOTICE TO ALL GROUPS / MEMBERS The Johannesburg Society of Advocates is hosting a workshop on acting judges in Rivonia on 29 – 31 May 2015. Speakers include Justice Brand (as designate for the Chief Justice), Justice Majiedt, Judge President Mlambo, Deputy Judges President Mojapelo and Ledwaba, Dame Linda Dobbs, (first woman of colour judge in the UK) Retired Justices Kriegler and Nugent, Judge Binns-Ward , Doctor Moshoeu (chief executive officer of the South African Institute of Judicial Education) and Justice Kachale of the Malawian High Court. The workshop is informed by the following facts and principles: Acting Judges make up a significant component of the High Court bench in Johannesburg and Pretoria Acting Judges are frequently drawn from the ranks of the advocates profession Being a good advocate does not necessarily make one a good Judge, although there is an obvious overlap in roles We need to know how best to serve the Judiciary The challenges of mixing an acting stint with an advocates’ practice are considerable and little appreciated by first-timers Judges make the best teachers of Judges The Bar is duty bound to support its historically disadvantaged members in many ways to advance the cause of transformation, and this includes support to take up judicial appointments Support for the Judiciary is a duty of the Bar Ongoing training of its members in practice related skills is a duty of the Bar We should equip our members to answer the call, should it come, to take up acting appointments and even if ‘the call’ does not come, the training is beneficial to an advocate The benefit of training expenditure and experiences, particularly those that permit a convivial interaction with the Judiciary, should be extended beyond the most junior of our members The Bar should support the South African Judicial Education Institute and publicize SAJEI’s activities to our members High quality training experiences inspire and rejuvenate one’s practice and outlook on the profession ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2014/2015 Bar Council: D C Mpofu SC (Chairman); J M A Cane SC (Vice-Chair) I Green SC; G Kairinos SC; L J Morison SC; V Ngalwana SC; P F Rossouw SC; G Shakoane SC C Georgiades; L Hollander; A P S Nxumalo; J Raff; G B Rome; R S Willis; S Yacoob; M J Zulu Honorary Secretary: K D Mhango Assistant Secretary: R Mastenbroek Administrative Officer: Janis Krienke Assistant: Maria Ferreira Those who cannot attend will be able to access a specially commissioned video package of conference proceedings to be available as a permanent online training resource on this web page.
