TMBS Master Chef 2013
TMBS Master Chef 2013
Over the last two weeks, ten Y9 students have been showcasing their cooking skills in the hope of becoming the
TMBS Master Chef 2013. The event, which was organised by Miss Collinson, was an instant hit with students as they organised
and planned their meals to impress the judges Mrs Wallace and Mrs Ashdown.
The first week saw the preparation of a main course. All the contestants looked very nervous indeed!
Some of TMBS budding Master Chefs preparing their dishes.
The atmosphere in the cookery room was ‘buzzing’, as the budding
chefs took their positions and waited for the competition to start. It
wasn’t long before the room was a blur of mixing and chopping, as the
students raced against the clock to produce their dishes. The tension
started to mount as their 30 minutes ticked away until finally, it was
time to plate up their cuisine and face the judges.
The students said they’d had “an amazing time” and all
asked were pleased with the outcomes of their cooking.
Dean Burnham who prepared ‘Chilli Salmon with spinach,
green beans, potatoes and mushrooms said, “it was
brilliant, I was a bit stressed but it went ok as I had
practised last night and had left myself 5 minutes to
present my food properly for the judges”.
Josh Blewitt, who was a very close second place, with a beautiful dish of ‘Thai tuna steak with potatoes and green beans with
fresh salsa’ said “I was so hot! I got really stressed but I was dead pleased with the end result, I’m so glad I had a go at it”.The
judges had a hard job before them.
Each dish was praised for its presentation and flavours.
However, they both judges were unanimous in their decision
when they finally arrived at Darcy Finn’s Scallops with white
pudding and asparagus wrapped in bacon: they had found their
winner.
Darcy, who loves cooking, was ‘shocked and amazed’ to win this week’s ‘cook off’. She said she had “been very nervous before
the competition but had felt ok when she started cooking and had felt confident with her dish when she finished it”.
Mrs Wallace, who was so impressed by all the students’ attitudes and achievements, said “Darcy’s dish was amazing, its flavours
and the way she had so beautifully presented it, I believe, make it a very worthy winning ‘Master Chef dish’. Mrs Ashdown also
said she had been ‘blown away’ by the calibre of the food presented by the students and that it had been ‘fantastic to see them
all enjoying it so much’.
It was an extremely difficult decision for the judges Mrs Ashdown and Mrs Wallace, but finally after much deliberation, 6
students were chosen to go into the next round.
Week two saw the preparation of some fabulous deserts!
.
Lauren Johnson took the crown for first place in deserts, with
her winning combination of dark chocolate and orange
mousse and dark chocolate and kiwi mousse.
Lauren was “completely amazed” that she had won the
second round as she “didn’t think her dish looked as good as
some of the other deserts being made” but “she was really
pleased she had.”
Both judges said Lauren’s mousses ‘had beautiful flavour and
she had presented them perfectly’.
That we ended up with two students taking joint first place
in TMBS Master Chef 2013 is a testament to all the
contestants’ skills. All students were awarded a certificate
and although they said it had been a very demanding
challenge, they were all glad they had taken part.
Well done to all our fabulous young chefs and a huge thank you to Miss Collinson, for providing our cooks with
such a fantastic opportunity to showcase their culinary talents.
