Welcome to
the IAPAs 2014
Access International and the International Powered
Access Federation (IPAF) warmly welcome you to
the IAPAs 2014.
T
here has been an outstanding response to the International Awards for Powered
Access (IAPA) this year with a huge number of entries across the 13 categories.
Included in those were many very strong entries; so if you didn’t make it on to the
shortlist this time, please don’t be put off entering again for the awards in 2015.
Jointly organised by KHL’s Access International and IPAF this glittering annual event
celebrates best practice and excellence in the powered access industry. Take a look
through the following pages of this booklet to see how the shortlisted entries are taking
innovation and safety to the next level.
The shortlist was decided at the judges’ meeting in London, UK, on 4 February. Between
them, the five independent and impartial members of the judging panel came from across
the world and provided decades of experience in the powered access industry. I would like
to thank all the judges for their enthusiasm and diligence during the judging process - see
the judges’ biographies after the shortlisted entries round-up.
I invite you to sit back and enjoy one of the biggest nights in the access industry calendar
and share in this impressive collection of products and ideas.

IPAF Training
Instructor of the year
Gilbert William Decruz,
BS Technology, Singapore.
Interpersonal skills mark out this candidate, with a
great attention to detail in monitoring the progress
of the trainees and understanding their needs. Mr
Decruz conducts one-on-one learning sessions to
hone in on the strengths and weaknesses of each
candidate. He also refines the training sessions to take
into consideration all trainees. Further commitments
include being a speaker for the Singapore Institute of
Safety Officers.
The judges said: “Mr Decruz has broken down
language barriers and provides IPAF information in a
dynamic way.”
James Duffy,
Access Plus, UK.
Mr Duffy goes above and beyond the call of duty to
deliver exceptional service to customers. He will jump
on a plane, train and boat at a moment’s notice to
meet customer requirements. One example is teaching
on a boat in the North Sea, off the Norwegian coast.
James stayed on board for one week, starting courses
at midnight to accommodate all shift patterns. Access
Plus measures the delegate’s training experience on
every IPAF course – Mr Duffy continually scores 99%
on customer satisfaction. He has taught over 200
foreign nationals, proving communication ability.
The judges said: “James Duffy comes from an
enthusiastic company and is dedicated to training, even
at night so trainees can work in the day.”
Josef Hollstegge,
Ruthmann, Germany. Mr Hollstegge has been providing IPAF training in
Germany and around the world for many years. He
started as a technician at Ruthmann in Germany in
1973. Then in 1976, he started travelling the world,
training great numbers of operators. He has been
a certified IPAF instructor since 2010 and provides
training even in Algeria, Iraq, and Iran where there are
no IPAF training centres as yet.
The judges said: “With 40 years of travelling the
world Mr Hollstegge has transitioned easily to IPAF
training and works with a technically difficult product,
sometimes without the use of computers.”
Martin Wraith,
CTS – INATIV, UK.
Some of Mr Wraith’s achievements include being
re-elected onto the IPAF training committee in March
2013. He is an active member of that committee. He
was solely responsible for the recent change with
regard to the width between cones during any IPAF
operator practical assessment. He was also the main
driver behind the development of a senior instructor
workshop to train new instructors and continues to
play an active role on the PAL+ working group.
The judges said: “Martin Wraith has contributed
extra work on top of training with the development of
courses. He is a consistently great asset to the IPAF
team.”
Tony Radke,
NES Rentals, USA.
Mr Radke served as the main technical expert during
the creation of the new eLearning version of the AWPT
programme rolled out in 2013. He was also the first
senior instructor to teach an AWPT Evaluator Course.
This first session served as a pilot and many ideas,
including the Evaluator Guide Book, were generated
through his efforts. Mr Radke and his team were
responsible for training over 70 AWPT Evaluators in
less than 30 days and providing operator training to
over 1100 NES Rentals employees in 90 days. He
has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from
trainees.
The judges said: “Tony Radke is an outstanding
champion of IPAF, with great achievements in the US
market.”
IPAF training centre
of the year
Access Plus, UK.
The company has invested more then UK£300,000 in
a state of the art training facility with an indoor arena,
with emphasis on trainee comfort and maximum
learning experience. Within a year the training facility
has grown from offering six courses to a potential
capacity of 90 health and safety courses. It offers
all IPAF related courses and is getting ready to offer
PAL+ in January 2014. The company is investing more
than UK£100,000 on bespoke software to improve
the training booking systems, instruction information
system and customer pre-training experience, plus it
has launched TrainingPlus.com targeted at the health
& safety training market in the UK.
The judges said: “Even though they are a young
company we were impressed by the way they organise
themselves - a small company acting with a big belief
in themselves.”
A-Plant, UK.
Successes over the last 12 months include a 20%
increase in trainee numbers, a 13% increase in
revenue for IPAF training and an innovative DVD
refresher course. The company has also opened three
www.iapa-summit.info
Petrobras to train 260 operators. The partnership aims
to drive all Petrobras subcontractors to be obliged to
adopt IPAF training.
The judges said: “We are impressed by the rate of
growth and how Mills has taken the IPAF philosophy
and driven it through the business.”
NES Rentals, USA.
new training centres, as well as new courses and
accreditations and promoted its products and services
through a number of marketing activities. A-Plant has
invested in its staff through recruitment of dedicated
business development executives for training and has
received high levels of customer satisfaction from its
IPAF training course evaluations.
The judges said: “A-Plant shows how a huge
organisation can do things very professionally and
impressively. “
The company initiated a partnership with IPAF to
create an eLearning version of the AWPT Operator
Training classroom course. The company also worked
with IPAF to develop the role of AWPT Evaluator, who
conducts the written examination, pre-start inspection
and hands-on practical evaluations for applicants
who have successfully completed the eLearning
programme. NES then created the Evaluator Guide
Book which is for use by IPAF for AWPT training
centres utilising the eLearning programme in the
future. In addition NES Rentals trained all of its 1100
employees (including office personnel) with the AWPT
Operator Training eLearning Programme.
Power Towers, UK,
for the Pecolift
The 1.5 m platform height Pecolift vertical mast has
taken more than 2.5 years in development and works
by utilising an innovative, patented stored power
mechanism that provides 90% of the power required
without the need for batteries, mains power, hydraulics
or electrics. All it requires is for the operator to turn the
handle which inputs the remaining 10% of the power
required to lift the platform. Platform dimensions:
720 mm length x 600 mm width. Safe working
load is 150 kg.
The judges said: “This is really new, reliable and
eco-friendly; a standout piece of equipment.”
The judges said: “NES has done a great job for IPAF
in the US. It has taken on board the IPAF training
philosophy and driven it through the business, with a
great part played by CEO Andy Studdert.”
Product of the year –
Low level access
Manlift Middle East, Dubai.
Manlift has focused on training IPAF instructors
and demonstrators who are fluent in more than one
language. The Middle East market is heavily reliant
on labourers from the Far East, India, Pakistan and
Nepal. Important details can be lost in translation
when tuition in multiple languages is not offered.
The company also ran large-scale Safety Awareness
Training Days (SAT Days) free of cost on large rental
projects where many AWPs were working. Manlift
says it has become the go-to IPAF training centre in
the UAE.
The judges said: “Manlift has presented interesting
working techniques in extremely difficult conditions,
and is leading in training in its region.”
Mills Estruturas e Serviços de
Engenharia S.A., Brazil.
Mills Rental introduced IPAF training in 2011. In 2013
the company increased the number of PAL Cards it
issued by more than 200% compared to the previous
year. It represented 48% of total PAL Cards issued
in Latin America and 72% of the total PAL Cards in
Brazil. In 2013 Mills promoted a nationwide series of
safety seminars, presenting AWP and IPAF training
to the market and struck a deal with oil and gas giant
Custom Equipment, USA, for
the HB-1230 scissor lift.
The HB-1230 is a 12 ft platform height compact aerial
scissor lift. The idea is
to give contractors a
favourable alternative to
traditional 12 ft maststyle lifts. The HB-1230
has a large 25 inch x
53 inch (1.35 m) deck,
and includes a 28.75
inch (.73 m) additional
slide out deck extension.
Weight is an important
design consideration,
in at 1670 lbs (758 kg).
Zero turn radius (ZTR)
operation allows the
operator to use this
machine in virtually any
work area including
crowded office buildings, hospitals, and hotels.
The judges said: “Custom Equipment has produced
a really great little machine that can be used even in
residential homes and goes in normal lifts.”
Product of the year –
MCWP
Alimak Hek, UK, for the APF
35/75/44 transport platform.
The Alimak APF Super Transport Platform was
specially designed and manufactured to support Laing
O’Rourke’s ‘smarter construction’ ethos during the
building of a prestigious central London project. The
key requirement for the hoist was to move Building

Services Modules that were 6m long x 2m wide x 1m
high. In co-operation with Select Plant Hire, Alimak
Hek manufactured a super-large transport platform
from the established Aliclimber range to operate on a
Scando 650 twin mast. It measures 7.5 m wide x 4.4
m long, has a 3500 kg capacity, 12 m/min speed and
36 m height mast.
The judges said: “An example of a fruitful cooperation
that brought about an innovative solution to a
challenging task.”
Hydro Mobile, USA, for the
S Series mast climber/
transport platform.
The Hydro Mobile S series was developed to meet
a requirement for a North American heavy duty,
electrically powered, rack and pinion mast climber and
a transport platform product. The ability to combine
the two types of platform provides the owner with
a greater return on investment. The S Series has
a max single mast platform length of 60 ft (18 m)
with a capacity of 6000 pounds (2727 Kg). In twin
mast configuration it can stretch to a maximum
platform length of 120 ft (36.5 m) and a capacity of
13000 pounds (5910Kg). The Swivel Bridge feature
is a platform section which can swivel forward and
backwards to profile odd building shapes.
The judges said: “This is something new, the swivel
bridge is very innovative.”
Scanclimber, Finland,
for the Double Decker.
This platform has two working levels fixed one on
top of the other. Both platform levels can have one
to many independent and horizontal, back and forth
sliding platform decks (modules). The upper deck
level is 2.13 m above the lower deck. The lower level
platform decks can slide 2.03 m outwards from the
standard platform and the upper deck level modules
can move 360 mm outwards and 1030 cm inwards
compared to the movement of lower level decks. The
movement of the lower level platform modules is
controlled by an electronic drive unit using pendant
remote control. There is a separate motor for every
deck module. The upper level platform modules are
moved manually by wrench.
The judges said: “A unique time
saving product. The Double Decker
platform is very flexible, meaning it
has a wide operating range.”
Product of the year –
vehicle mounted
Bronto Skylift,
Finland, for the
S 65 XR truck mount.
The 65 m working height S 65 XR truck
mount was introduced at Bauma last year. It is the first
of the new XR range (eXtreme Reach) which covers
working heights from 30 m to 70 m. The plan behind
the range was a larger work envelope and reduced
cost of ownership delivering improved productivity.
Specifications include up-and-over capacity of 15 m, a
700 kg safe working load, transportation height of 3.8
m and length of 12 m. All carried on a 3 axle chassis.
The judges said: “New technologies and new design
led to well consolidated quality and service. Impressive
design features have been incorporated.”
Moog, Germany, for the
MBI 50 crawler mounted
under bridge unit.
The crawler version of MOOG’s MBI 50 unit was
designed especially for operation on narrow pedestrian
bridges, as the unit is compact and has a narrow inoperation width of 1.6 m. With the load distribution on
two crawlers it is possible to stick to a minimum area
load even though the overall weight is 3000 kg. This
makes it possible to work on bridges that are rated
low-weight only. There is a standard assembly version
but the platform can be rotated 90°
downward before the tower is buckled
in sideways.
The judges said: “Moog offers a new,
innovative and fresh machine.”
Palfinger, Germany, for the
P900 truck mount.
This 90 m working height truck mount has an outreach
of 32.3 m with 530 kg cage load.
It is possible to work below 0° degrees with over
22.5 m outreach and up to 8 m below ground level.
The jib has a rotation angle of 180° and 2 x 90° cage
rotation. It can be ordered on a standard chassis or
a Tadano Faun all terrain. Total weight is below 48
tonnes. The machine has dummy fuel tank with the real
one hidden away. It also has a sleeper cab.
The judges said: “A great machine with a very
compact tower system. The complexity of creating
a machine to work at that height is difficult. It is very
customer-service orientated.”
Ruthmann, Germany, for the
Steiger T720 truck mount.
The 72 m working height T720 has an upper
telescoping boom system of almost 20 m for working
on high objects where every cm counts. The extended
upper boom and Rüssel jib can be manoeuvred
around delicate objects such as glass surfaces and
advertisement panels with sensitivity. It has a 2 x 90°
cage-rotation device and telescoping working cage,
plus 600 kg load capacity and can be extended in width
hydraulically. There is a standard built-in cleaning
hatch, tool-storage trays, safety belt loops, and
operator’s seat.
The judges said: “Outstanding features, including
up-and-over and outreach. It can be fitted on a 4-axle
chassis which reduces cost.”

Product of the year –
self-propelled booms
Outstanding
customer service
Access Plus, UK.
JLG, USA, for the Toucan
12E/12E Plus vertical mast.
Palazzani, Italy, for the Ragno
XTJ52 track mounted boom.
The Toucan offers working heights of up to 12.65 m,
as well as maximum horizontal working outreach
of 6.05 m. A purpose of this machine was a major
upgrade to current battery powered vertical telescopic
mast boom lifts. Key improvements are:
drive performance, better overall efficiency and battery
life cycle and machine compactness.
With a 52 m working height the Ragno XTJ52 is the
world’s tallest crawler mounted boom and the flagship
of the Palift range. Its compact stowed dimensions
enable it to enter buildings and other work areas where
traditional access platforms are too large or heavy. The
XTJ52 can be set up on finished floors, uneven ground,
slopes and steps, thanks to its multi-position hydraulic
outriggers and outreach limiting system. Outreach is
20 m, while stowed dimensions are 8.7m length x 1.45
– 1.80m width x 2.48 m height. It has a three-section
telescopic (11m), 170 degree articulation and 680
degrees rotation.
The judges said: “An important upgrade. The outreach
they get with this machine is phenomenal.”
MEC, USA, for the 4069-A GSE
aircraft ground support series.
The 4069RT-A GSE (diesel powered Aircraft Ground
Support Equipment) and the 4069ERT-A GSE electric
version, are designed to take aircraft maintenance
personnel to 14 m of working height. Vertically
collapsing guard rails allow the operators to form the
guard rails to the curvature of the aircraft fuselage,
to include the upper, mid and lower sections of the
aircraft. It includes a reverse mounted scissor stack
assembly - as the platform is elevated the scissor stack
slides to the rear of the machine instead of the front. By
using PPE there is no need for scissor stack protection
guards, this provides the operator with an increased
outreach when the platform is elevated.
The judges said: “A unique and clever machine
servicing an industry that is becoming more-and-more
important. “
The judges said: “This is a special product and a
completely different type of concept – the biggest
tracked platform in the world.”
Terex AWP, USA, for the Genie
SX-180 telescopic boom.
Standing at 180 feet, the Genie SX-180 self-propelled
telescopic boom offers a maximum horizontal outreach
of 80 ft. The working envelope includes the ability to
reach 70 ft horizontally at 120 ft of vertical reach. The
machine’s newly designed and patented X-chassis
extends and retracts to provide stability on the job and
a narrow profile for transport. The machine requires
no over width or over height permits allowing it to be
transported on a standard truck and trailer.
The judges said: “The biggest self-propelled boom
in the world (at the time of the judges’ meeting), has
taken the product sector a step further into the area of
truck mounts.”
The company’s performance is averaging at 96%
‘highly satisfied’ from customers. On off-hire,
satisfaction rating for 2013 is 98.1% ‘highly satisfied’.
The company is a true 24/7 service provider, at no
extra cost and measures all call-outs and breakdowns.
Average time to fix for 2013 was 34 minutes. The
company operates a Loyalty Reward Scheme,
including training, transport and equipment rewards.
All new customers are added to the company’s Point
Touch information scheme and are guaranteed seven
service provisions, including 30 minute updates
guaranteed and price match for machines and training
courses.
The judges said: “A bright, energetic company doing
things differently. Excellent customer focus through
setting benchmarks and then building the whole
company around that.”
IAPS Group, UK.
In 2013 the company launched Parts Plus parts
management system for regional hire/rental companies
and substantially increased parts inventory with
UK distributorship for Schaltbau Machine Electrics
components and appointed first IPS Parts Partners
in Ireland and Denmark. It substantially increased
machine inventories to reduce lead times for
customers and launched ‘Sell My Platform’, a used
car-style purchasing service for powered access, and
launched online a Service Reminder initiative to advise
when LOLER examinations due.
The judges said: “IAPS continues to provide a
high level of service to the industry which is hard to
maintain at this level.”
Industrial Access, Romania.
2013 was the most challenging year in the history
of Industrial Access, with the access market in
Romania suffering the most since 2008. Yet the
company integrated all its systems into one powerful
web based tool, Smartrent. From a single point
there is instantaneous secured access to all details
concerning the life of an asset and the interaction
with customers, along with predictive capabilities and
track and tracing features. There is automated key
performance indicators in sales, service, customer care
and logistics, eliminating down time, dead times and
unproductive operations.
The judges said: “This forward-thinking company
has come up with new ideas in a unique market rethinking old structures due to a difficult market, with
focused leadership.”
www.iapa-summit.info
Ruthmann, Germany.
Ruthmann has eight factory-owned service centres
and four additional service points in Germany, Austria,
and France. The company offers a mobile service; 24/7
telephone hotline; all-inclusive agreements (regular
monthly payments cover all repair and maintenance
work); Ruthmann Connect remote diagnosis; oil
maintenance service for all Steiger models and other
brands; complete repair and maintenance programme;
and a pick-up and drop-off service, to name a few.
The judges said: “A very strong support network with
technical support on a very high level. All inclusive
service agreements show the company is very
comfortable with its equipment.”
Contribution to safe
working at height
AFI-Uplift, UK.
The updated SmartZone prevents unauthorised use of
mobile elevating work platforms; provides prompts for
familiarisation, training and pre-use checks; enables
checks to be made on an operator’s history of MEWP
use; provides service reports and a track and trace
facility, along with a geo-fence facility within a vandal
and weatherproof control unit. With this update, the
size of the unit has been reduced, among a range
of other features. The company is also producing
a SmartZone video to promote its benefits and
familiarise operators.
The judges said: “This marks an important
development in the ongoing quest to keep a machine
and its use in check.”
Kosran, UK.
The Kosran Safety Access Control (SAC) system is
designed to deliver best practice health and safety on
job sites by controlling access to aerial lifts and
securely shutting them down when not in use. The
Kosran SAC prevents the unauthorised use of MEWPs
and is designed to prevent fatalities, serious personal
injuries, machine damage and downtime. It also
provides a menu of benefits which reduce the daily
operational cost of running a fleet, so the technology
pays for itself. It can be retrofitted to all MEWPs.
The judges said: “Kosran is making the market safer
and more accountable. This equipment is a vital part of
the industry and its future.”
Peter Douglas,
Nationwide Platforms, UK.
As a member of Nationwide Platforms’ senior
management team, in 2013 Mr Douglas has held
operational responsibilities for the business’ 27
operational depots, a fleet of more than 11,000 access
platforms, and a team of more than 600 employees. He
established an IPAF Council dedicated to the UK access
market, among other commitments to the association.
For Nationwide Platforms he launched the ‘Your safety,
our priority’ guide, developed the new Toolbox Talk
videos to help tackle key issues and launched the first
Health and Safety Week.
The Judges said: “Mr Douglas has shown an
outstanding personal commitment to safe working
at height on behalf of his company, including the
promotion of IPAF’s accident reporting project.”
Teresa Kee,
NES Rentals, USA.
Teresa Kee is the director of environmental health
and safety for NES Rentals Holdings (NES), one of
the largest rental companies in North America. In
conjunction with IPAF, the eLearning programme was
developed and delivered to all 1,100 NES employees.
As a result of her leadership, the eLearning course is
now being offered across the US by IPAF and available
to people working at height. In 2013 she has been
AWPT Training Advisory Council chairperson (2013),
Scaffold and Access Industry Association (SAIA) AWP
Council co-chairperson and is on various OSHA and
ANSI teams and committees.
The judges said: “An amazing commitment to the
industry and a clear ability to make things happen.”
Powered access
pioneer
Galmon, Singapore. The first company to introduce booms and scissor
lifts to Singapore in 1982, Galmon started out with a
small fleet of four units, expanding it to a fleet of more
than 2,800. In 1994 Galmon became sole distributor
for JLG Industries, making it the only distributor of
MEWPs in the region. Galmon has since partnered with
local governing bodies to promote the use of MEWPs
in various industries and across other countries. The
company is certified by the Singapore Ministry of
Manpower as an accredited MEWP training provider.
The judges said: “A unique example of developing
and educating a market and focusing on safety. The
company has also been instrumental in getting access
equipment into other parts of South East Asia.”
Proing, Columbia.
Proing was established in Bogotá in 1997 as an
engineering consultancy. It was the first company in
Colombia to offer the rental of aerial work platforms.
The aerial lift market is predicted to grow significantly
following the Ministry of Labour’s Resolution 1409.

all heights above 1.5m. Proing became the exclusive
Snorkel distributor for Colombia in 2012 with many
customers now purchasing MEWPs rather than
renting. The company quickly realised that operator
training was vital to the growth of this emerging
market. After joining IPAF in 2011 it opened the first
accredited IPAF training centre.
The judges said: “Working in the emerging market,
Proing has been around some time already in a difficult
emerging market and is making it a success.”
Srini Kadaba, Machinery
Division of Yusuf Bin Ahmed
Kanoo Company, Saudi
Arabia.
Srini Kadaba developed a market-leading position for
Grove Manlift in Saudi Arabia (1987 – 2003), during
which he educated companies on the safety and
productivity benefits of MEWPs. In 1997 he established
the first Arab-owned MEWP rental company in Saudi
Arabia and was founder member of Lifting Equipment
Engineers Association (LEEA) in the same country in
2006. He also supported the formation of the Indian
Access Equipment Association (AEA) and its ties to
IPAF in 2013, and campaigned with leasing and finance
companies and insurance companies.
The judges said: “A career in highlighting and
developing the access equipment industry in emerging
markets has been topped off with great work in India, a
difficult market for this industry.”

included two custom-made ACT-8 units travelling at
11.9 m per minute. Fraco designed and fabricated a
15 m long x 2.50 m large freestanding work platform
without anchors and mounted on motorised chassis
on wheels. Also, the platform was equipped with
wheels which allowed movement without stopping the
installation of the metal pieces.
The judges said: “This was a very difficult job in an
extremely dangerous environment.”
Alimak Hek, UK.
Two Alimak rack and pinion Alimak SE 500 FC
elevators were installed on transmission towers along
the Amazon River in Brazil. With each tower as tall as
the Eiffel tower, the Alimak elevators provided access
for critical servicing and maintenance. Installed in
March 2013 the project was remote with the nearest
village of Almeirim, an hour away by speedboat.
Port Arthur, Texas,
USA, is home to
BASF’s single train
liquids steam cracker,
the largest in the
world of its kind. One
focus was a single
tower more than 300
ft above grade level.
Century delivered
and installed a dual
car elevator system
rated for 6000
pounds capacity or
30 personnel per car.
Both cars provided vertical transportation to the six
landing levels. Furthermore, the scaffolding and the
elevator mast had to be rated to withstand hurricane
force winds as this facility lies in close proximity to the
Gulf Coast. Although the turnaround was slated to be
completed by the onset of hurricane season, the high
wind hazard was significant.
The judges said: “Impressive combination of scaffold
and access at considerable height on a very tight
schedule with time pressures of impending hurricane.”
Galmon has taken numerous steps to improve its

and safety. In recent achievements the company has
been recognised by Singapore’s Ministry Of Manpower
as an accredited MEWP Training Provider and

The Judges said: “The company seeks to be the best
in terms of quality and service, and remains at the
forefront of its industry in Singapore.”
Mills Estruturas e Serviços de
Engenharia S.A., Brazil.
The Judges said: “It was very impressive how
Alimak Hek was able to move machines over such
big distances to get to its location and how they were
adapted to fit the particular application.”

The company has increased the size of its business by
over 50% following a UK £85 m investment, leading
to the simultaneous acquisitions of Hi-Reach in the
UK and Access Rental Gulf in the Middle East. Despite
significantly increasing staff numbers it also achieved
a further reduction in accidents. The company has
added new features to its telematics system in its
delivery vehicles; launched an updated version of its
SmartZone system, which controls and monitors the
use of powered access machines; and invested in the
PDA hand-held device to provide real time recording of
machine deliveries and collections.
The Judges said: “AFI provides 360 degree
professionalism with uncompromising commitment to
detail and improvement.”
In 2013 Mills invited its entire sales team and some
180 other employees to its own three-day convention
to enhance productivity. It also launched the Flying
High sales campaign designed to increase its standing
in the market and started the Mills Service Cup in
which individual depots compete with each other to
speed up maintenance, response times to customers
and improve cost management. In addition the
company set up a leadership development programme
and invested more than 11,000 hours of training to
service people. This was all achieved while increasing
net sales by 45%.
The Judges said: “Mills continues to lead the way
in Brazil and is making a positive difference to the
industry and its employees.”
Nationwide Platforms, UK.
Last year saw a comprehensive investment
programme with 1,650 units added to the fleet. The
company also established a regional customer service
centre, as well as investing in campaigns designed
to tackle key safety challenges. It also developed its
employee engagement initiatives around key safety
issues and made safety messages more engaging
and accessible. In March 2013, Nationwide Platforms
realigned its hire desk locations to establish customer
service centres in each of its regions. New benchmarks
in technical excellence were also launched in the first
quarter of 2013.
The Judges said: “Another outstanding year for the
UK-based company as it strengthened all areas of its
business, with the usual keen eye on safety.”

About the Beaumont Estate
The first reference to Beaumont is around the year
1300 when the estate and much of the locality was
owned by Hugo de Remenham. Beaumont Estate was
then known as Remenham. The estate (which was
then over 91 acres) was then owned for a period by
the Tyle family, and subsequently by John Morley,
Francis Kibblewhite, William Christmas. It then was
acquired by Henry Frederick Tynne who had architect
James Gibbs re-design the house in 1705 and named
it Bowman’s lodge. In 1714 Thomas Tynne, 2nd
Viscount Weymouth inherited. In the mid-eighteenth
century it was acquired by Sophia, Duchess of Kent.
Back then, the land continued right down to the river.
In 1751 The Duke of Roxburghe purchased the
estate for his son - Marquis of Beaumont (then a boy
at Eton College) who renamed it Beaumont Lodge. In
1786 Warren Hastings, the first Govenor-General of
India (Beaumont’s most celebrated tenant), acquired
Beaumont Lodge at the cost of £12,000. In 1789 the
estate was sold to Henry Griffith (which then still
included the Bells of Ousley), who had Henry Emlyn
rebuild the house in 1790 as a nine-bay mansion and
carry out extensive improvements.
In 1805 the Beaumont property was bought
for about £14,000 by Viscount Ashbrook, a friend
of George IV. After his death in 1847 his widow
disposed of The Bells of Ousley but continued to
reside there until 1854, when she sold it to the
Society of Jesus as a training college. For seven
years it housed Jesuit novices of the (then) English
province and on 10th October 1861 it became a
Catholic boarding school for boys with the title of
St. Stanislaus College, Beaumont, widely known as
the ‘Catholic Eton’. Queen Victoria is known to have
visited Beaumont three times during the time in which
it was a school.
In 1870 a chapel was built by renowned architect
Joseph Hansom with a barrel-vaulted ceiling. It was
carefully painted in 1902 by William Romaine-Walker
who described his style as ‘The Grandchild of the
Pompeian’.
