Pleasure Island is
located in
southeastern North
Carolina, nestled
between the

Cape Fear River and the Intracoastal Waterway. It provides yearround pleasant weather and warm waters, making it the perfect
year-round spot to enjoy sun, sea and island breezes. Just
minutes from historic Wilmington and Southport and Myrtle
Beach’s world-famous golf resorts and the Grand Strand,
Pleasure Island is the heart of coastal resort fun-in-the-sun.
With Carolina Beach to the north, Kure Beach in the middle and
historic Fort Fisher to the south, the Island offers over seven
miles of wide, uncrowded beaches and safe, warm
ocean waters, all protected by USLA-trained lifeguards, for
swimming, sailing, surfing, kite and board surfing and
numerous other water sports. In addition, the salt marshes
and estuaries of the famous Cape Fear River and Intracoastal
Waterway allow for kayaking and small boating where you
can visit the many barrier islands that dot the Carolina coast.
You’ll be delighted to find some of the finest and most
affordable ocean view lodging values on the East Coast,
including excellent hotels, motels, cottages, condos and plush,

Restaurants abound for every taste and budget and you can
savor freshly caught seafood, sample international cuisine,
Carolina barbecue or enjoy one of our excellent family
restaurants. And best of all, you can expect reasonable
prices wherever you go.
Pleasure Island, known as an angler’s paradise, offers excellent
pier, surf and deep-sea fishing, as well as fresh water fishing in
the Cape Fear River and estuaries. You can catch Tuna, Bass,
Mackerel, Spot, Flounder, Snappers and a wide variety of game
fish. We have one of the last sections of beach on the East
Coast where if you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle and a permit,

you may drive right on secluded sections of beach for hours of
great surf fishing, swimming or sun bathing.
When you need a break from the sun, take the family to the
93,000 square foot North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher.
The kids will love the special programs and history buffs be
sure to visit the Fort Fisher Civil War Museum and Battlefield,
where you can walk over one of the largest earthwork
fortifications of the South and the last major stronghold
of the Confederacy.
Afterwards, take “the best $5 scenic cruise you’ll ever see”, a
35-minute ferry ride across the Cape Fear River to the quaint,
riverfront town of Southport. Have lunch at one of several
wonderful restaurants and while you’re there, be sure to visit
the Maritime Museum.
And for the Eco-tourist, camper or boater, Pleasure Island is
home to two of North Carolina’s most beautiful state parks.
Carolina Beach State Park has it’s own deep water marina with
boat ramps located on the Cape Fear River just off the
Intracoastal Waterway. You can hike through the beautiful Sea
pines, kayak, fish or just laze about, but be sure to look for
the famous Venus Flytraps growing naturally in the park.
For day-trippers, enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride through
the historic cobble-stoned streets of Wilmington. Tour the
beautiful River walk and ante-bellum mansions and enjoy the
fine shops and restaurants. Visit the restored USS Battleship
North Carolina
with its WWII
reenactments
and many
fascinating
museums. And
just a few
miles outside
of the city
you’ll find the
world famous
Airlie Gardens

To reach Pleasure Island from I-95, take I-40 east to State Route 421
at Wilmington. Then follow Route 421 (a four lane, divided highway)
through Wilmington to our Island. Yes, the name is Pleasure Island
and the name says it all! Make Pleasure Island your own personal

After a day of fun on the beach, enjoy a stroll around our
quaint town center. Check out numerous jewelry, local art,
and clothing shops; then meander by the Municipal Docks
to watch the fishing boats unloading the day’s catch.

pier, catch a head boat, charter
your own deep-sea fishing boat,
or launch your own at our public
launch facilities.

Never fear – we don’t roll up the sidewalks at dusk! Every
night you can board a large party boat to tour the Cape Fear
River, dancing and dining under the stars. Also, local
restaurants regularly offer live music, DJ’s and karaoke.
Remember, we’re the true home to Carolina “Beach Shagging.”
Yes, Carolina Beach has it all- just the right mix of peace and
quiet and fun activities for all the family. Enjoy our quaint but

Kure Beach
Kure (Cur-ee) Beach is Carolina Beach’s beautiful, relaxed and
friendly neighbor to the south. The town was established in
1870 with Hans Anderson’s arrival from Denmark. It now has
approximately 2,500 yearround residents. Many of

surfing or fishing. Our town is an angler’s Mecca, with annual
fishing tournaments, one of the best fishing piers (over 711
feet long) on the East Coast, bountiful surf fishing and free
boat launches nearby. At our small town center, you’ll find the
pier, several excellent restaurants, a convenience store and
amusements for the kids. You can walk to “town” or bike on a
bike path from most of the accommodations in Kure Beach.

beaches just a short drive from all the conveniences, Kure

CAROLINA BEACH STATE PARK
Located in Carolina Beach on Dow Road, nine miles south of
Wilmington, off of NC Hwy 421, the Park includes a marina just
minutes from the
Intracoastal Waterway,
which provides access to
some of North Carolina’s
best fishing spots, a
secluded camping area
beneath towering sea
pines, and miles of

hiking trails that traverse a variety of distinct habitats— not to
mention the presence of the Venus Flytrap, one of the world’s
most unique carnivorous plants. Located in an area steeped in
both history and natural diversity, Carolina Beach State Park
includes a visitor’s center with exhibits depicting the wonders

FREEMAN PARK RECREATION AREA
Residents and visitors have long enjoyed the “North End”
beach area now known as Freeman Park. In fact, the area has
become one of Carolina Beach’s major attractions. Whether
coming to the area to fish, swim, go boating, crabbing or
casting for minnows, people love Freeman Park. They are
drawn to the beautiful beach with its variety of wildlife,
dunes and majestic sea grasses indigenous to the region.
Whether you are into day-tripping or camping, Freeman
Park has become a popular destination for all. For more

CAROLINA BEACH LAKE PARK

Carolina Beach Lake, located on North Lake Park Blvd. and
Atlanta Avenue, was once noted in the Guinness Book of World
Records as being the freshwater lake closest to salt water. It is a
great place for a picnic and the site
of Pleasure Island’s “Island of
Lights” celebration during the
holiday season. This 11-acre lake
offers a walking path around the
lake, paddleboat rentals,
four gazebos, restrooms, a
sheltered picnic area,
playground equipment
and the Stingray
Amphitheater. And in the
summer, you can enjoy
free outdoor “Movies at
the Lake” on Sundays at

FEDERAL POINT
HISTORIC PRESERVATION SOCIETY
The center houses exhibits and audio-visual presentations
portraying periods in the Federal Point community, including
pre-historic, colonial, Civil War, and development of CarolinaKure Beaches and Seabreeze as tourist attractions. Located at
1121-A North Lake Park Blvd, Carolina Beach. Hours: Fri-Sat

FORT FISHER STATE HISTORIC SITE
Fort Fisher, the most visited state historical site in North
Carolina, was the largest sand and earth fortification of the
Confederacy. Its job was
to protect blockaderunners en route to
Wilmington with
supplies for the
Confederacy. It was the
fall of this Fort in 1865
that opened the way for
the Union victory. The
site includes a
fascinating Civil War Museum, the remains of the fortifications
and a smaller museum called, “Hidden Beneath the Waves”,
an underwater archaeology exhibit on local shipwreck dive
sites and Cape Fear maritime history (910-458-9042). Come
visit the museums, take a guided tour of the Fort, witness
Civil War reenactments and picnic at the Cove, a lovely spot

STATE RECREATION AREA

is the Fort Fisher
State Recreation
Site, at the southern
end of the Island,
includes over four
miles of beautiful
undeveloped beach
and marshes on the
Cape Fear River and

the Atlantic. Shellseekers, bird watchers, anglers and loggerhead turtles find
seclusion here, and you’ll see some of the most beautiful
sunsets in the world. Bluefish, puppy drum, mullet, spot and
flounder are plentiful here. If you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle
and a daily or annual pass, you can drive on the beach;
launch your boat at the public ramp, kayak or sailboard in the
expanse of shallows at the island’s southern point. The site
also includes a protected swimming area, showers and a

In October, when the weather is warm, the sun’s shining and
the warm ocean breezes are fluttering, bring your lawn chairs
and family, leave your hectic world behind and exercise your
“license to chill” for two music-filled
days at the world famous “Pleasure
Island Seafood, Blues and Jazz
Festival.” Now entering its 22nd year,

recognized Blues and Jazz performers, coastal cuisine, natural
beauty and salt air transport you into another dimension...
and into a world where your cares and stresses are left
behind. It’s a world where the weather is warmer, the people

talent, features live jazz and blues
performances on two stages. The
music can’t be beat and the locally
prepared seafood is simply the best
in the region. This two-day festival
takes place along the scenic Cape Fear River at the Fort Fisher
Air Force Recreation Area in Kure Beach.

If fishing is your game, you’ll never be disappointed when you
cast your line in the waters around Pleasure Island. The
convergence of the Cape Fear River, Intracoastal Waterway
and the Atlantic Ocean assure you of a great catch whether
surf, deep sea or pier fishing.

The Carolina Beach Municipal Harbor, with one of the largest
recreational fishing fleets north of Florida, is the Island’s
boating hub. Charter boats (up to six people) and head boats
(up to 150 people) return each day with fish laden anglers
proudly displaying the day’s catch. All of the boats provide
bait, poles and tackle or you
can bring your own.
