THE FINAL STAGE
Here we are, the moment of truth! Admission decisions are in the mail for most colleges and universities and students anxiously await the delivery of letters daily.
There have been some disappointments and some pleasant surprises but, bottom line, most of our students have options and some
positive decisions to make. However, your work is not quite finished yet. It is very important that you make your final decision
and submit your tuition deposit by May 1 to the college you plan
to attend next year. It is equally important that you inform schools
you have not selected of your decision. This allows them to pursue students on their waiting list and offer them admission.

or deny any financial aid and/or scholarships you have been offered.

Finally, pay careful attention to any mail, snail or electronic, you receive from the college of your
choice. They may send you specific and different information and deadlines related to Housing,
Honors Programs, Athletics, etc. that will be very important for you to follow through with and
verify. This follow through reflects well on Lakewood High School and our students and we encourage you to complete the process. Congratulations seniors on a job well done!
LETTING GO
Parents– now that leaving home may be more of a reality for your student, we would like to offer
you an opportunity to hear how to handle all that is involved in saying goodbye. On Tuesday, May 5
from 6:00—7:00 PM, counselors will present a program entitled Letting Go for parents of senior
students. We will deal with the changes a family goes through and the emotional roller coaster experienced when one of the members prepares to head off to college. The presentation will include information on emotions to expect, formulas for success, life on a college campus and stress points in
the transition. Valuable resources will be shared including the now well recognized “bible” on today’s college experience, Letting Go, by Karen Levin Coburn and Madge Lawrence Treeger.
This will be the twelfth year the Counseling Office has presented this program and in our first attempt we included students. Although we believe that they too gained some important insight from
what they heard, we also feel that the program was more directly aimed at the parents. Thus our
designation this year as Parents Only. Maybe, by next year, we will be organized to present a Students Only separate format also.
So mark your calendar for May 5 and meet us in the Library Classroom for information and strategies on making the transition and spread the word to your friends.

Do you remember the map of the United States posted last year outside of the Counseling Office
with flags indicating the college choices of our graduating seniors? We will again be displaying
the final selections of this year’s seniors, the Class of 2015. When you have made your decision
please see Mrs. Schechter in the Counseling Office and we will add your name and school to the
list. In addition, a graduation insert will be produced that includes scholarships LHS seniors
have been awarded. So bring a copy of your award letter to your counselor and we will print
it.

The following is an exerpt from “Empty Nest…….Full Heart” The Journey from Home to College,
by Andrea Van Steenhouse, Ph.D:
Farewell
The robust journey these past months has been filled to overflowing with emotions and experiences
for the students and the parents. Last time for this, first time for that, good-byes and hellos,
successes and failures, closed doors and opened gates, the seriousness and the absurdity, the calm
winds and the stormy seas. In fact, looking back, it feels like the turning of the weathervane in Mary
Poppins, signaling the time for her to move on. The hope is that, as we near the end of this voyage
and await their first summer home, we can rejoice in the passage. We trust that relationships have
not only survived but have become enriched along the way. Though the nest is empty, our heart is
full.
It is time. Our cherished children are now embraced by a new family. We need to trust that our
values carry from home to school. It is also our hope that their new world confirms and even
broadens their validity.
There have been many lessons we’ve discovered along our journey. We learned to know when to
listen and when to speak, when to do and when to wait, realizing that we will be needing each other
in different ways now. Knowing all of this gives us the confidence we need to acknowledge life’s
affirmations as well as its mysteries.
As the circle of life repeats, we would wish to be blessed with each of us growing into a new, fuller
person and with a family in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
