About the Trainer:
Martin Hole is an AST and SLE in Mathematics who works at Thornden School. He has provided
strategic support to schools across Hampshire inspiring maths departments with his hands-on
approach to learning.
Overview:
In order to maximise your effectiveness as a nonspecialist delivering the Key Stage 3 maths
curriculum, this course will give an overview of the
National Curriculum for maths at Key Stage 3 with
particular attention being paid to common problem
areas. In addition to ensuring your understanding of
key mathematical concepts, the use of learning
styles, thinking skills and motivational techniques
will be considered in the context of creating
successful schemes of work and lesson plans.
Who would this course be aimed at?
Teachers who have undertaken initial teacher training in a
subject other than mathematics and/or:



have no qualifications in mathematics that exceed
GCSE or A-Level standard and who are either

are support staff who are timetabled to teach or
support maths at KS3 or KS4 and want to
improve their knowledge.
are primary teachers who wish to improve their
knowledge in response to the new KS2
curriculum
Objectives:
This programme will enable colleagues to:
 Focus on mathematical knowledge which will move students forward in number, algebra, shape and
handling data.
 Explore a range of stimulating resources which will have real impact in the classroom.
 Develop practical strategies to motivate students and make lessons more memorable for learners.
 Develop questioning techniques to enhance pupil understanding.
Cost:
