Teaching Rates, Ratios, and Proportional Reasoning in
For: Math Teachers, Math Department Heads, Team Leaders, Math Curriculum Coordinators and Math Special Educators Teaching Rates, Ratios, and Proportional Reasoning in Grades 6—8 Featuring TEACHERS21 Workshop Trainer Polina Sabinin Wednesday, June 3, 2015 At the MSSAA Office, Franklin 6-10 PDPs STEM Sign-In/Registration: 8:00 am to 8:30 am Workshop: 8:30 am to 3:00pm Fees: Member $195/Non-Member $260 Proportional reasoning is a central component of the Common Core Mathematics Standards in grades 6— 8. It is the pillar on which students build their understanding of multiplicative relationships, linear functions, as well as non-linear functions. This workshop will explore hands-on activities and problems that offer students the opportunities to make sense of these central concepts and to connect new ideas to what they already know from elementary school. Many students’ misconceptions have their roots in the area of rates, ratios, and proportionality. We will also discuss the areas where these misconceptions are most likely to arise and how to select activities which allow students to grapple with these misconceptions and to correct their thinking. Throughout the workshop, participants will be provided with a variety of refreshing Common Core aligned activities and strategies for use in their classrooms in developing students’ Mathematical Practices and stimulating further thought. Participants will: Explore the connections and differences between rates, ratios, and proportions. Analyze students’ misconceptions about rates, ratios, and proportions and how to select activities which help them correct their thinking. Explore a variety of Common Core aligned classroom activities to engage all middle school students. Experience activities from different stages of the students’ learning progression in the area of rates, ratios, and proportions. Experience the Standards for Mathematical Practice in action. Polina Sabinin is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Bridgewater State University. Polina has served as the Associate Director of the Center for Mathematics Achievement at Lesley University and edited a mathematics text for Pearson Addison-Wesley. She is currently co-authoring LogicGym, a teacher’s manual that introduces students to logic through an engaging visual game. Polina is the Past-President of the Massachusetts Mathematics Association of Teacher Educators (MassMATE) and former Newsletter Chair for the Association of Teachers of Mathematics in Massachusetts. She earned her Bachelor of Science in biology and mathematics from the University of Calgary where she also earned a Master’s degree in oncology. Her doctorate research focused on the development of algebraic and proportional reasoning.
