Taunton School, an international co-educational school founded in 1847, is seeking to appoint a
Chief Operating Officer (COO). This is a new role, created with the intention of bringing all the
support and commercial services of this large, exciting and diverse school under the leadership of an
experienced COO who can make change happen.
Reporting to the Headmaster/CEO and accountable to the Governing Body, the new COO will be
responsible for all the support services and commercial activities, including finance, HR, operations,
commercial, estates, facilities and IT. They will also be proactive in pursuit of cost-efficiency and
new income-generating opportunities to enhance the overall finances of the School, encouraging
business-like attitudes and best practice throughout all operations. A member of the Senior
Management Team, the new COO will participate in the strategic planning and development of the
School and be charged with developing a highly professional staff ensuring that the School can meet
its current needs and its vision for the future.
In the new Chief Operating Officer, the School is looking for a highly professional, ambitious,
entrepreneurial individual who can lead the commercial and support functions in a modern
integrated manner that applies best business practice within a schools' environment. With prior
experience which may, but not necessarily will, come from the schools sector, candidates will
potentially show experience in finance/accounting and business planning. They will have operated
in a senior executive position, will have had responsibility for a range of operations activities and, in
addition, will have experience of income-generating activities. They will have excellent people
management and development skills, will empathise with the ethos of Taunton School and want to
contribute to its continuing success.
