FROM THE DESK OF

FATHER DAVIS:
oday, we are invited to “climb the tree with
Zacchaeus,” to get a better view of Christ, to put Jesus
more within our sight, to see the Lord’s approach, to catch
a glimpse of His face, and to encounter Him as He draws
near. Zacchaeus was a man of short stature and, so,
physically he needed the aid of the tree to help him see our
dear Lord as He walked along the road in Jericho. Yet, who
among us is “so tall” in stature that we do not need a little
help to get above the fray, so as to see the Lord more
clearly? Who among us doesn’t need to climb out of the
complications and challenges of daily life to catch a better
sense of the nearness of our God and of the gift of grace?
Sometimes, our view of the spiritual life is impaired.
Sometimes, we get lost in the crowd and confused by a
directionless world. Sometimes, the darkness of sin and
selfishness can consume us and cloud our vision of truth.
The invitation of our Gospel this weekend is for us to do
whatever we can to put Jesus in view, to see His face, to
hear His words, and welcome the new life that He brings.
Due to the initiative shown by Zacchaeus; due to his
willingness to go the extra mile; to change his ways,
demonstrate generosity, and to make up for past wrongs,
salvation came to his house that day. The metanoia that he
evidenced, the “turning around of his life,” was the fertile
ground of ready welcome for the coming of Christ into his
home, into his life. He was never the same. How willing
are we to “turn things around”? How zealous are we to see
the face of Jesus and to welcome Him into our homes
definitively, convincingly? The process begins with our
decision to climb the tree with Zacchaeus.
If anything emerged from the recent Archdiocesan
Synod that should catch our attention is the profound
need we have for more people to welcome Christ in their
lives. This becomes possible through a Church community
that offers quality religious education and Christian
formation for children, youth, young adults, and the rest of
us who are life-long learners along the road of discipleship.
Coming to know Christ better happens when we, as
Church, are more effective in announcing our faith, in
throwing the doors of welcome and hospitality open to
non-believers, and when we all get more serious about the
privileges and demands of our life as members of Christ’s
body, the Church. We are all called to see Christ and to
live differently. Our own lives made new will then become
catalysts for others to zealously seek the face of our blessed
Lord. Are we witnessing to Christ as best we can? Are we
sharing him with others, and helping them to see Him as
He approaches?
Jesus came to seek the lost, to invite them home, to give
them direction, to heal their blindness and selfishness, and
to give them entrance into the life of grace. Admittedly, it’s
an invitation that even believers need to better appropriate
in their lives. Let us climb the tree with Zacchaeus, and
help others to do the same.

HIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
NOVEMBER 3, 2013
The LORD lifts up all who are falling
and raises up all who are bowed down.
— Psalm 145:14
I
ALL-POWERFUL YET CARING GOD
t used to be that when I thought, “Old Testament,” I
thought of narratives written many centuries before
Christ. Then I learned that today’s passage from the book
of Wisdom was written less than one hundred years
before Jesus came along. These words were so
contemporaneous with Jesus that he himself conceivably
could have written or spoken them. He certainly lived
them.
The Wisdom reading is a poetic prayer celebrating a
Creator-God before whom the universe is like a grain of
sand, yet who is still lovingly concerned with every
individual. This is the God whom Jesus reveals, with
unlimited power over all creation, yet watching out for
sinners climbing trees.
Zacchaeus was no ordinary tax collector, but the
chief tax collector, and “a wealthy man.” But he wasn’t
too proud to run ahead and clamber up into a sycamore
tree just to get a glimpse of Jesus. Maybe, sinner though
he was, he recognized in this wandering preacher the
object of the Wisdom poet’s adoration.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
very week, some treasures from our tradition are
shared here. Where does all this history come from?
The history of God’s people of prayer is always coming to
light, mostly because scholars have dedicated their lives
to research. They translate and ponder prayers and
songs; explore the places used for worship; look at the
vessels, books, and vestments; and read works from legal
documents to letters and diaries. In the 1930s, Hitler’s
rush to arm Germany closed seminaries as priests and
seminarians alike were drafted into service.
One professor, Father Josef Jungman, forced from
his classroom, spent the war years in an Austrian library.
His careful work disclosed much of what we know of the
history of the Mass. His great work, The Mass of the
Roman Rite, describes the evolution of Eucharistic
celebration and inspired generations of scholars to
explore a tradition surprisingly rich and varied. It was
said of him that he had a command of the past that cast
new light on the present, and opened up a clear
direction to the future. His contributions to the Second
Vatican Council helped shape the way that we worship
today. At the end of his life, in 1975, his studies
completed, he told a friend that he was waiting patiently
for the Lord’s knock at the door to take him to the
heavenly banquet.

imaginaba narraciones escritas muchos siglos antes

cantos.
