POSITION: ARTISTIC DIRECTOR / CO-CEO Malthouse Theatre is a company dedicated to the development, production and promotion of contemporary theatre. With a strong focus on the development of new work, Malthouse Theatre presents reinvestigations of classic work, reappraisals of the Australian repertoire and the best of new Australian and international theatre-making on its stages. It assumes a collaborative position of cultural leadership within the contemporary theatre community within Australia, being the company of ‘first breaks’ for many individual artists and practitioners from the small-to-medium sector. Reports to: MALTHOUSE BOARD (CHAIR) Supervises directly: Company Manager and function, Artistic Associates and function, Education Manager and function Shares supervision (with EP): Associate Producer, Business Manager and function, Finance Manager and function, Production Manager and function, Marketing & Communications Manager and function, Development Manager and function Works closely with: Executive Producer and Board KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Cultural leadership In partnership with the Executive Producer: Build the company's national and international profile Develop and implement an artistic vision which is strongly differentiated and clearly articulated Lead high artistic standards and direct at least two shows per year that reflect and further the artistic vision Facilitate cultural dialogue and audience development practice Ensure emphasis is placed on education, regional and public programs Provide strong and coherent public communication of the Malthouse Theatre program and Artistic Vision through media opportunities Participation in local, national and international cultural forums Stakeholder management Build strong relationships with key government, philanthropic and corporate stakeholders Artistic excellence and craft Create opportunities for the most imaginative, proficient and/or promising theatre artists locally and nationally and internationally through functional artistic policies and processes, resulting in a season of theatre projects that reflect the artistic vision Ensure that the company has creative capital and currency, in partnership with the Executive Producer, that supports: o Strong relationships with industry collaborators o Flexible and responsive processes o o o A diversity of forms, styles, aesthetics on stage Professional development opportunities for artistic staff A positive working relationship between guest artists and theatre support crews and company personnel Maintain and supervise artistic standards and risk-taking across all programs Implement research and development as required Evaluate the artistic program through rigorous internal and external assessment processes Strategic In partnership with the Board and Executive Producer, develop and implement a business model to support the artistic vision In partnership with the Board and Executive Producer, identify longer-term strategic threats and opportunities for evolution of Malthouse Theatre's artistic and business models With the Executive Producer develop a strategic business plan with strong buy-in from Board, staff and key stakeholders With the Executive Producer create a strategic framework that anticipates key directions for Malthouse Theatre into the medium-long term, including for the venue Sector development Identify and provide access to upcoming artists of talent through establishing processes and access opportunities (such as mentorships, bursaries, female resident director scheme) Maintain a culture of support for new work in an interdisciplinary model , through ongoing dialogue with leading artists in other forms Support formal residencies for individuals and/or companies, collaborations with emerging companies and showcasing opportunities Ensure company presence at showings, productions, arts markets and industry events Management and Governance In partnership with the Executive Producer: Develop and implement compliant company policies, which enhance viability and stature of the company and working lives of its employees Create a dynamic, inclusive and achievement-oriented company culture Ensure the financial viability of the company Ensure timely acquittals are provided to key stakeholders Implement a constructive performance appraisal process Provide regular and engaging company communication Ensure a safe and non-discriminatory work environment via policies and example Work towards breakeven or profit budgets, tight cost control, maximising revenues Oversee compliance and governance in key areas of Human Resources, Finance and Legal INHERENT PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The physical requirements of this position are consistent with those of an Artistic Director and CEO in a theatre company. You agree to advise the company of any pre-existing injuries or conditions that may arise that might inhibit you in the physical requirements of the position. This is a fulltime position based at The Coopers Malthouse in Southbank.
