Introductory Statistics, 8th Edition by Prem S. Mann
Prerequisite: College Algebra or equivalent
Objective: Provide students with a basic understanding of probability and statistical concepts
and the ability to apply exploratory data analysis and basic inferential procedures in solving
simple real world problems and understand the results of the statistical analysis. Statistical
computation will be recommended using EXCEL.
Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to comprehend the
basic concepts of probability and statistics, apply basic statistical inference techniques in
solving simple real world problems, and understand the results of fundamental statistical
analyses.
Grading Policy: Your grade is based on the following performance scores, homework and
quizzes (30%), two midterms (40%), final exam (20%) and attendance (10%). Standard
percentages will be used in determining final letter grade (i.e. 90-100% = A)
Homework and quizzes: Doing homework is critically important for you to understand
statistical concepts and methods (& also pass the tests). Homework will be assigned in every
class meeting and due weekly on Tuesdays. No late homework will be accepted. Information
of homework can also be checked out from the Web page
http://math.uhcl.edu/li/teach/teach.htm. A quiz will be given out after each chapter and the
date will not be announced in advance.
Attendance: Attendance is highly expected and necessary if you want to successfully
complete and pass this course. Each student is responsible for all material covered and
assignments given or due even if you are absent.
Readings: Reading the covered material is expected.
