The Prep School, for ages 2-13, is located eight miles away at Glastonbury. The school has in its 80 year history achieved significant growth. Established in 1935 by Jack ‘Boss’ Meyer with six princes from India, today it is an international, multi-faith school welcoming young people from all backgrounds and over 70 nationalities. Millfield may be one of the bigger independent schools, but its ethos remains to discover and develop the potential of every pupil. The school has been structured to make sure it is friendly, approachable and focused on the unique needs of each individual. Millfield provides a broad and balanced education which not only prepares pupils for public examinations but also gives them the confidence to achieve success throughout their adult lives. The school offers an exceptionally wide range of courses whilst still allowing pupils' programmes to be tailored to individual needs. At GCSE 28 subjects are on offer and 40 subjects at Updated February 2015 AS/A2 Level. An exciting range of vocational courses are also available in the Sixth Form, including BTECs and the Leiths Basic Certificate. Innovation remains at the heart of the school with a commitment to continually refine how to offer an exceptional, fully rounded, education. Recent examples of this include the launch of Nine at Millfield, a dynamic Year 9 programme, and the integrated 1:1 use of pupil iPads to support pupil learning and to equip pupils with essential digital skills. COMPUTER SCIENCE & ICT AT MILLFIELD The Computer Science and ICT department is staffed by six full-time teachers and one technician. The department is housed in a modern building which consists of five modern and well-equipped ICT rooms equipped with all-in-one widescreen PCs, a technician’s room, and a staff room. There is a strong emphasis on practical work within the department and the small set sizes allow pupils to work independently most of the time. All pupils and teachers have iPads which are used regularly to support learning in lessons and to aid preparation and administration. The school has cutting edge high-bandwidth WIFI and network infrastructure, supported by a dedicated and skilled team of IT support technicians. Significant investment has been made in ICT facilities across the school and the school has installed high specification all-in-one PCs and Macs in key areas of curriculum need, alongside our 1:1 iPad scheme. In year 9 we have designed a digital skills course that is aimed at developing a sound base of skills and knowledge to support the use of ICT across the curriculum; providing both essential digital skills for a pupils’ future study, and a base for the study of IGCSE Computer Science or ICT. Updated May 2015 In years 10 and 11 pupils have the option of taking the subject to IGCSE either in the form of Computer Science or ICT. The department strives to deliver these courses through experimental and investigative techniques. We aim to instil skills that will enable pupils to question the theory of computing, software design and its practical use and to be able to apply these skills to resolve unknown and unfamiliar situations. In the sixth form pupils can opt for AQA AS/A2 level Computer Science or ICT; between 8 and 18 pupils are entered for AS and A2 Computer Science or ICT (AQA specification) in the sixth form. Two/three tutors specialise in teaching AS/A2 Computer Science, and all tutors have been involved in teaching AS/A2 ICT. From September 2015 pupils will study AS/A2 CIE Computer Science.
