This Sunday, at Kehilat Mogen David, we will observe Yom HaShoah. We pay homage to the memory of our six million holy
martyrs. Although it is unfortunate that our shul hasn’t been full for this event in the past we are hopeful that every member
and friend will be in attendance this Sunday morning at 9:30 am. It is altogether fitting that we keep the memory of the
martyrs alive.
Many events in our history have highlighted the distinction between the pure and the impure. Our Egyptian experience, the
Hadrianic persecutions, the Christian Inquisition, the Crusades, the expulsions from country after country, and now the rise
of anti Semitism throughout the globe is once again threatening our very existence. It is difficult enough to maintain the
purity of Judaism in our individual lives. The pressures of society and the exigencies of earning a parnasah place
formidable obstacles in the path of observance of Torah. The Jewish victims represented purity, goodness and holiness.
Their assailants, often wearing the insignia of religion, were impurity incarnate.
But the Shoah is without precedent. Hitler, (ysvz), was never excommunicated by the Catholic Church, with which he made
a formal concordant. The Nazi doctors, presumably the most “civilized” professionals in Europe, instituted the “killing
factories” for “sound” ideological reasons. There was universal collusion. The local population were Hitler’s willing
executioners. All represented human depravity and impurity at its worst.
Although the victims were not all saints and included Jews who were both committed and uncommitted to their Judaism, all
were pure and holy. The murderous oppressor made the distinction between the impure and the pure manifest. And the
Church has not yet done complete teshuvah, while the rest of the world is once again targeting our people.
Good Shabbos
Rabbi Gabe Elias
