generations as they have faded into obscurity. Rabbinic interpretations acknowledge that the Ner Tamid, the Alter of
Incense, the system of sacrifices, and the priestly garments were symbols which the people of the Exodus needed to
help make the transition from one culture to another. During the many years of servitude in Egypt, the Jews were not
strangers to holy lights, incense, or sacrifices of all kinds. It was logical that they would utilize familiar forms of
symbolism. The difference was that their symbols pointed to the worship of one God. The best description would be
of the Ner Tamid being one candle and it burned day and night. Also, pagans and slaves called their spiritual leader
the High Priest, reminiscent of their experience in Egypt.
The parsha tells us "Command the people of Israel that they bring to you (Moshe) pure olive oil to burn always." This
oil was for the Menorah that illuminated the Sanctuary and later the Temples in Jerusalem. The Talmud notes the
words that the people should; "bring to me" oil for the Menorah. The rabbis comment that Hashem needs no
illumination; the Menorah is for man's benefit. The rabbi's interpret the Ner Tamid as a symbol of Israel, whose
mission it was to become a "light of the nations." Another analogy states that just as the Ner Tamid burns
constantly, so the Jewish people live on in spite of all the enemies who try to destroy us. Another explanation is that
the Ner Tamid burns above the ark today to teach us that the Torah is a light which shows the way to live. The
Menorah, all of torah, is meant to give light and guidance to man, to give direction and purpose to his/her life. The
ultimate beneficiary of Torah and mitzvot is not Hashem but we who live by it. Let us continue to observe the light of
the Ner Tamid not just in our synagogues but in our daily lives and homes.
