D AY 1 : WE DN E S DA Y MA R CH 18, 2015
Your bag is packed, Euros safely tucked away, passport and ticket in hand
for getting through airport security! It’s time to head to the airport for your
much anticipated overnight flight to Amsterdam. Bring a good book or
watch an onboard movie. Remember, no caffeine! You want to snooze as
much as possible in order to arrive rested Thursday morning!
D AY 2 : TH U RS DA Y, M A R CH 19, 2015
Plan to arrive at Schiphol Airport between 6 am. and 8:30 a.m., where I’ll
meet you and you can join the first arrivals for coffee or hot chocolate at
Deli France, as we wait for the rest of our group to arrive. Then board our
coach and visit Zaanse Schans, a charming outdoor craft village, typical
of early rural communities in The Netherlands. Visit a working windmill,
pop in to see cheese being made and prepared for export…then watch
wooden shoes appear from a block of wood! It’s a
casual, restful start to our Dutch adventure. After
enjoying a welcoming lunch - we’re on the road to
Hindeloopen, a popular fishing village on the North
Sea, where the famous painted furniture that bears
its name is made – in both miniature and real life.
We’ll visit the Hidde Nijland Folk Art Museum and
see room boxes as well as life size vignettes with
samples of the colorful textiles and clothing of the
region, plus antique furnishings and accessories
painted in the Hindeloopen style.
HOTEL DE STADSBOERDERIJ – HINDELOOPEN
D AY 3 : FRI DA Y, M A R CH 20, 2015
After breakfast we’ll enjoy a leisurely stroll across one of the 16 little bridges
that connect the homes and shops in Hindeloopen, with a stop in a local
shop where Dirk, the owner, actually makes miniature furniture painted in
the traditional style. He has told me that he’ll make a Hindeloopen Kitchen
room box for any of our travelers who would like to order one. I took mine
home in my carr y-on luggage a few years ago! We’ll depart late morning
and drive across the scenic green Veluwe area to Apeldoorn, having lunch
at leisure upon arrival. Palace Het Loo has a lovely orangerie, perfect for a
royal lunch, prefacing our visit to the summer palace of William and Mar y,
she, the heir to the British throne, where they eventually reigned as corulers, the first time in histor y! The Palace interior is exquisitely furnished,
with furniture, paintings, silver and porcelain fit for the Queen she was to
become. Don’t miss it or the inviting Baroque gardens. Het Loos stables
are so ornate that many confuse them for the Palace, but they now house
antique cars and carriages! Het Loo is just across the street from our hotel!
DE KEIZERSKROON HOTEL - APELDOORN
D AY 4 : S A TU RDA Y, M A R CH 21, 2015
Board our coach after a lovely breakfast at our hotel, bid goodbye to Apeldoorn
and we’re off to the Netherlands International Dollhouse Show , held in the
SSP HALL in ULFT, a new location that Rika, its organizer, says we will love!
We’ll be there when doors open and enjoy the show until closing time. You’ll
find miniature treasures in all scales. Lunch is available on site.
HOTEL DE ROODE LEEUW – TERBORG
DA Y 5 : S UNDA Y, MARCH 22, 2015
Sleep in, have a leisurely breakfast at our hotel, then return to the show!
Doors open today at 11 a.m. and we’ll be there waiting! Now that we’ve
met a lot of wonderful new dealers, let’s head back to our favorite tables (or
stalls, as they’re called in Europe!) for one last look – and purchase! As the
show closes, we’ll board our coach and head off to Delft, our home for the
next two nights.
HOTEL VERMEER - DELFT
DA Y 6 : M ONDA Y, MARCH 23, 2015
The legendar y Keukenhof Gardens is our first stop this morning! It’s an
explosion of color, a parklike setting amidst wandering paths, small lakes
with swans aswimming, little bridges linking them all and here and there
a stall where the bulbs are begging to go home with you. Get this – so you
don’t have to lug them around, bulbs can be shipped to your home, just in
time for the appropriate planting in your part of the USA. Benches galore
for just taking it all in! We’ll have lunch here before heading to a wonderful
miniatures shop in Rijswijk where you’ll be sure to find a treasure or two to
add to your collection. Then it’s on to The Hague – and a visit to the Lilliputian
world of The Madurodam – ever y important building in the Netherlands recreated in Lilliputian proportions. Even the airport and Rotterdam docks
come to life here. Plus Madurodam has one of the best souvenir shops in
the countr y! We’ll return to Delft in time for a late afternoon stroll, just
before dinner at our hotel and perhaps some Show & Tell of our fabulous
miniature “finds”. DELFT
DA Y 7 : TUES DA Y, MARCH 24, 2015
Today is our day to explore Amsterdam. It will be a bustling contrast
compared to many of the places we’ve seen…bicycles ever ywhere, ridden to
work, school and shopping by the ver y young to the not-so-young! Those of
you who have been here before may prefer to spend the day on your own.
The rest of us will have a guided tour of the city, followed by a canal boat
ride through Amsterdam’s famous waterways. It’s the best way to enjoy the
fabulous architecture that makes this city so unique.
Then it’s on to the newly re-opened renovated Rijksmuseum. Check out
some of the Golden Age’s Old Masters,
swing through the incredible display of
original Delft pieces that leads you right
into the galler y that holds the precious
Baby Houses that we’ve all read about
and yearned to see in person. Plenty
of places for lunch in the shadow of the
museum or we can decide to grab a bite
in Haarlem, where we’ll visit another
place of reverence for us…the Frans
Hals Museum – where the Sarah Ploos Van Amstel Baby House beckons!
Be sure to watch the video shown in its galler y. More Old Masters on view,
it’s an art lovers dream come true! Our final night in The Netherlands will
be our farewell dinner. Time to exchange e-mail addresses for photo swaps.
