A Note From Your Agent
Its hard to believe that we have already flown through January and February and now
its March. There is a lot of information in this newsletter so be sure and read through
it carefully so you don't miss out on anything.

The Mississippi 4-H Livestock Program is an excellent program to have your child involved in. The Junior Livestock program is a unique opportunity to use live animals to
help youth develop. The main objectives of the program deal with the young person,
not the animal. Youth do learn something about agriculture and livestock production

and develop an appreciation for the livestock industry, but the main objectives are to
teach life skills and help youth become productive citizens of our society. The experience of youth owning and working with animals, being responsible for their care,
health, and growth, and exhibiting them in a competitive environment is a tremendous
character building process.

PAD and Club Congress 2015
Summer contest are right around the corner and now is the time to start preparing. There is a large
variety of contests that you can pick from. Contest areas range from tractor driving, interior design,
photography, and much more.
2015 Jr. 4H Project Achievement Day
Project Achievement Day is set up for Wednesday June 17th at Hinds Community College in Raymond.
Visual presentations, judging events, public speaking and share-the-fun are al available for 4H’ers ages 10-13.
Other 4H’ers ages 8 and 9 can participate in Cloverleaf Exhibits which is a prepared display about a chosen
project area. We want to help you prepare so give us a call as soon as you finalize your contest area.
2015 4-H Club Congress
Club Congress dates are May 27-29 at MSU. This is for Senior 4-Her’s 14 to 18 years old. Start looking at
your calendars now to decide if you are interested in attending. The cost to attend is approximately
$120 which includes some meals, room and registration fees. The advisory council will pay half
of the registration fee. Your half ($60) is due in the office by April 10th. Please feel free to call and
get more information on this trip if you are interested. Mr. Taylor Casey and I will be taking the youth to
MSU and chaperoning them while there.
Club Congress Tee Shirt Contest
Help choose and theme and design a log for the Official Congress Tee shirt
The contest is open to Mississippi 4H’ers. You may submit an entry as an individual or as a club.
Design Tips:
1. Keep things simple: some of the best desgns get their message across I simple form
2. Consider your market: This design will represent 4-H at our 2015 State 4-H Congress and be worm by
hundreds of people, teen and adult.
3. Use our brand: The clover has represented 4-H since 1907.

Poster Art Contest
Information is available at the Attala County Extension Office for the Poster Art Contest. The posters will be due
on Friday, May 15th.
There are two categories, one that is open to any 4-H topic and one that has the theme, “I-AM-4-H”.
The dairy poster contest will also be due on this date. The Theme for this poster is “Get More with Milk”.
Winning posters will be carried to competition at MSU. If you are interested in poster art, please contact our office to
get rules and instructions. Each contest has different rules and poster sizes.
Scholarships
Mississippi 4-H is once again proud to announce the 2015 4-H Scholarship opportunities. These scholarships
are available to eligible 4-H members. For those young people who choose to further their education, Mississippi 4- H Youth Development, 4-H Club Foundation of Mississippi, Inc. and the Mississippi 4-H Volunteer
Leaders Association offers scholarships to help support 4-H’ers with their educational goals. The following
scholarships are available:
The Gladiola Branscome Harris 4-H Scholarship
The Ike Campbell Memorial 4-H Scholarship
The Marian Carmichael 4-H Scholarship
The Troy and Mildred Holliday 4-H Scholarship
The J. K. Morgan 4-H Scholarship (for Mississippi State University students only)
The Mississippi Volunteer Leaders Association 4-H Youth Scholarship
The Deep South Equipment Dealers Association 4-H Scholarship
Special Notes:

‰ All scholarship applications are due in the Attala County 4-H Office by 5:00 pm on
20th. (This is Not a Postmark Date!)

‰ ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE TYPED!

‰ Previous winners are ineligible to reapply for the same scholarship.

‰ An application must be submitted for each different scholarship.

‰ Incomplete applications will not be considered.

‰ Each scholarship has specific criteria.

‰ Must send three copies of each application and only one copy of official
transcript.

Poultry Chain
The objective of the Mississippi 4-H Poultry Chain is to educate 4-H members in all aspects of poultry management. After completion participants will have not only developed excellent poultry management skills
and disease awareness, but also the valuable life skills of time management, planning, communicating, and responsibility.
Children ranging in age from 8-18 are eligible to participate at all levels and cloverbuds are able
to participate at the county level. Each participant will be responsible for purchasing 20 chickens of a specified breed that will either be a part of a layer category or a meat category. They will raise these birds to sexual maturity while keeping a record book of their progress. At the end of the process participants will
choose their top 6 birds to compete in a county show where a Grand-Champion and Reserve will receive a
trophy and the opportunity to compete at the State level. Each participant will receive a ribbon and certificate of participation. Birds will then be auctioned for profit and all proceeds will
be awarded to the participant. Grand-Champion and Reserve will maintain their
flock for an additional 3 weeks and compete at the State Show held at the State
Fair on October 11, 2014, where an overall Grand Champion and Reserve will be
awarded. All birds will be auctioned for profit after competition. If you would like

MSU Bug & Plant Camp /MSU Beekeeping Camp
Send your camper (or yourself) to MSU Bug & Plant Camp (June 14– 18) or MSU
Beekeeping Camp (June 21–25). We accept campers age 10 and up for these 4day residential, intergenerational camps. This year we will allow adults to enroll in

Beekeeping
Camp without an accompanying youth, and mature youth with a
strong interest in beekeeping may attend without an adult. CEUs are available for
teachers. The price is $400 per camper. Camps fill very quickly so please do not delay if you would like to

Discovery Days. April 11-12, girls in grades 9-12
Girls considering conservation careers can experience real-world science with women professionals in wildlife management and conservation. $25 registration fee covers all expenses, including meal and overnight camping.
Day Camp Edition. June 22-26
This camp is held in Starkville and operates 8:30 AM ‐ 4:30 PM. Students learn about natural ecosystems, experience real-world science, and explore new outdoor opportunities. $25 registration fee includes lunch and
all activity costs. (rising 6th - 8th graders)
Natural Resources Edition. June 7-10
A residential camp featuring hands‐on activities and field experiences in conservation and management of our
state’s natural resources, including wildlife, forestry, and water, taught by graduate students and resource
professionals. $300 (all‐inclusive) (Youth Ages 14-18)
Wildlife Recreation Edition. June 14-17
A residential camp focusing on Mississippi wildlife ecology and outdoor recreational opportunities, including
fishing, archery, and canoeing. Certification in Hunter Education is an available option. $300 (all‐inclusive)
(Youth Ages 12-18)

March 2014 Meetings

Kids in the Kitchen – Do you like to cook or do you want to learn how? If so then come join us at
the Extension Office for Kids in the Kitchen. Ms. Jackie Pullen will be teaching you about health
and nutrition along with how to prepare some tasty meals and treats. The class will be on Tuesday, March 17th from 3:30-4:30pm. There is a limit of 15 youth so call and registered by Friday, March 13th. There is a fee of $5 per youth. (Ages 6-12 only.)
Junior Master Gardeners –The Attala County 4-H Junior Master Gardeners would love to share
with you just how interesting gardening can be. Come join us at the Extension Office on Tuesday,
March 24th from 3:30 to 4:30p.m. This Month Ms. Betty Rodger s will be showing you how
to plant in mini greenhouses that you will get to take home. If you have a friend that you think
would be interested bring them along too. We look forward to seeing you there. (Ages 8 and up)
Beehive Sewing Club – The Beehive Sewing Club will be meeting on Thursday, April 2nd
from 3:30-5:30pm. Ms. J acklon Bur chfield is the Volunteer Leader for this Club. Come find
out what neat stuff she has for you to create this month. I’m sure it will be loads of fun so come
join us. (Ages 5 and up)
