In Her Words: Triena Baldwin
I graduated from Menchville High School, in Newport News,
VA and I went to Norfolk State University. My major was Special
Education. I wanted to teach people with disabilities. I enjoy
helping people who need help. I wanted to work with people who
have disabilities, but I never dreamed that I would be one of them.
One crisp, fall day in September 2011, a friend of mine was
driving me to Norfolk. Traffic on I-64 had come to a complete stop.
A car driving quickly pulled up in traffic beside us. He had to slam
on his brakes to keep from hitting the car that was at a standstill in
front of him. The vehicle came to a stop without hitting the car in
front of him, but the rear driver’s side tire came off of the car. The tire bounced and went
into the air. I leaned forward in my seat to see where the tire would land not knowing that
the tire would crash through my windshield and land on my head. No one else in the car
was injured, physically. But it left a mental scar on everyone in my car.
I was taken by ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. I lay in a coma for two
weeks. I was later transferred to a rehab facility in Virginia Beach to try to rebuild my
broken body. After my accident, I couldn’t walk, talk or see. One day in 2012, I noticed a
spider on my wheelchair. I quickly stood up and shuffled across the room to safety. When
I turned around, my mother and a nurse were looking at me with amazement. They said,
“You walked!” I said “Spider!”, and pointed to the chair. They killed the spider and then
joined me in my celebration of footsteps.
Since then, my baby girl has turned 18, graduated high school and started her first year
of college. My oldest girl, who turned 21, started her senior year of college. I am very
blessed to have two parents that not only took care of me until I got back to health, they
took care of my two children like they were their own children.
I now attend The Denbigh House. The Denbigh House is a wonderful place. The staff
at The Denbigh House have been very helpful. They don’t treat people like patients. They
treat us like important people. Every day we sign up to do tasks. The tasks are just like
household chores. The difference is, if we do a chore incorrectly, they are here to provide
help and guidance. If you do it incorrectly in your home or a job, the end result could
possibly be hazardous.
The Unit Coordinators at The Denbigh House have let us know how important it is
to establish goals for ourselves. When we set goals, it gives us things to look forward to
accomplishing. My goal is to work with people with disabilities in some way.
