ANZAC Day – Saturday 25th April
Tomorrow we will be commemorating ANZAC Day at school with a ceremony at 10.20.
The students have been involved in learning activities on ANZAC Day over the last two
weeks, 16 of our Year 2 students attended a ceremony in Glen Waverley on Tuesday and
our Whole School Circle Groups engaged in activities this afternoon looking at the ANZAC
symbols.
ANZAC Day this year commemorates 100 years since the landing at Gallipoli and has
therefore seen an increase in the discussion within the media of the significance of ANZAC
Day.
This is a commemoration of significance not only because of the great sacrifices of World
War 1, but also because as a result of WW1 we have defined what we see as the
character of modern Australia and the qualities that we see as important for us all as
Australians - courage, bravery, endurance, determination, mateship and service.
Our children need to have an understanding of the important events in our history that
have helped to develop our nation and impact our values and beliefs about ourselves.
ANZAC Day has come to represent so much more than the landing at Gallipoli, on this day
we honour all the men and women who have participated in wars, conflicts and
peacekeeping operations around the world and take time to reflect on and appreciate their
sacrifice and the sacrifice of their families.
I encourage parents to talk to their children about the discussions they have been having
at school and to visit websites which may assist them in discussing this important day on
our calendar.
We look forward to many of our parents attending our ANZAC Day Ceremony tomorrow
and helping us to impress upon our students the importance of acknowledging the day.

Assistant Principal’s Report
A warm welcome
Thank you to the staff, students and wider school
community who have welcomed me into the Mount
Waverley North PS family over the past fortnight. It has
been a great pleasure getting to know students whilst
wandering through the learning spaces, during
Performing Arts and at the House Athletics Carnival.
Moreover, in the short time I’ve worked with the staff I
have been extremely impressed with their passion for
teaching and learning and their genuine love for the
school – they are an absolute asset! I am looking forward
to working with the school community for the term and
getting to know you all. Please don’t hesitate to introduce
yourself!
Special Religious Instruction (SRI)
This week notices were sent home asking for enrolments
in the optional extra-curricular SRI program. Families are
asked to return the DET Approval Consent Form by
th
Monday 27 April. As stated on the notice there is a $10
expense aligned to SRI which is not required at this
stage. Please note: SRI is not be confused with the
National School Chaplaincy Program and Carol’s role at
the school. Your child’s involvement or non-involvement
has no impact on Carol’s funding, furthermore,
students not enrolled in SRI are still able to have access
to Carol and the Positive Wellbeing programs she is
involved with.

Visual Arts
Middle students have been undertaking weaving activities
inspired by samples of basketry from Papua New Guinea,
Fiji and Africa. One activity has involved children
weaving, using a plastic cup and a selection of coloured
wool, to create a small basket like the Bolga baskets
produced in Ghana, Africa. Children have shown great
perseverance in overcoming challenges such as; ensuring
an odd number of spokes were cut for weaving, wool
was secured using appropriate knots and the right
tension was used during the weaving to ensure the
basket retained its shape. As you can see by the
examples pictured, the efforts of our students have been
truly amazing!
Congratulations to all the students who participated in the
Mount Waverley North House Athletics Carnival on
st
Tuesday 21 of April. A terrific day was had by all with
